A competent manager would make and keep notes of every important conversation they have.

AFL News: Why Bombers opted for Scott over Hird, departing Dog claims awkward B&F, Gunston to Lions

I have seen and read Phil Egan’s 13 page report (but not the attachments).
Like you Birdman, I have experience of workplace investigations and it doesn’t get close to meeting the usual standards. PE would be justified to respond that that’s not what he was asked to do.

Which just begs the question about HFC’s design of the review process. Surely HFC should have anticipated that the PE review might turn up specific complaints about individuals (as opposed to general observations like “the X system would be better for Aboriginal players if it took into account A,B &C”) and had a separate process to investigate complaints that met the usual standards.

I reckon an forensic exploration of why the HFC took the approach it did will be a very lively topic at the next level of investigation.

The media is strangely silent.

Lions stand behind 'father figure' Fagan after 'distressing and difficult week' amid racism allegations

“In a battle between the two best-run clubs of the last two decades…”

You’ve got to be kidding. Hawthorn was up there until a week ago.

What’s wrong with a stress free grand final?

AFL Grand Final Focus: Dad's Army wins the war - here's how Chris Scott's Cats produced their masterpiece

I understand the saying, but I’m not sure what you mean in this case.

Fagan 'categorically' denies allegations that have left him 'shocked and deeply distressed'

We were lucky enough to get to the MCG today. TV coverage these days is pretty good but you don’t really understand why players do A rather than B unless you can see the whole ground. The Cats had fantastic options all day and had the skills to take them. The Swans also had options (although fewer) but their skills didn’t hold up.

AFL Grand Final Focus: Dad's Army wins the war - here's how Chris Scott's Cats produced their masterpiece

Chris: I’ve been meaning to come back to your article, which I thought was a thoughtful corrective.

I daresay that the independent review (which some will claim is not independent) will ask questions about why the HFC came about in the first place, who set it up, why the Terms of Reference were constructed as they were and how the participants were chosen. The review will then go on to ask why, when provided serious allegations, they didn’t broaden the inquiry to (i) nail down the grounds for the allegations and (ii) whether it was – if true – a policy approach that applied to all players.

There has also been some excited comment about the Westminster System, which is not particularly well informed. Most Constitutional experts agree that it is more than just “the Parliament”: it encompasses the Head of State, the Parliament and an independent judiciary which ensures the common rights that have evolved from the Magna Carta.

Hawthorn’s interaction with Indigenous players is a reminder that off-field issues need to be better addressed

Most of the Swans supporters that I spoke to before the game thought that (i) the best they could hope for was an honourable 4 to 5 goal loss, and (ii) the Sam Reid selection was a big risk. My own thought was that they’d find it impossible to contain the Cat’s forwards.

It’s all academic. The Cats will crush the Swine.

We now know that the people involved had engaged the Zwier of the law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler to represent them, so you were spot on. All strength to you for having the courage to call it.

UPDATED: 'Told me to kill my unborn kid': Clarkson responds to allegations in Hawks racism report, Fagan stands down

1. The allegations made to the consultants engaged by HFC to do the review are very serious. In fact they are astounding.
2. I would expect that a review of this sort (given how serious the allegations are) would have recognised the need to get sworn affidavits with dates, times, etc before presenting the report. It would have been reasonable for the consultants to de-identify the allegations on the basis that they are supported by sworn affidavits.
3. The ABC journalist should have gone through a similar due diligence process.
4. Tracey Holmes said yesterday that giving someone 24 hours to comment was standard because “things could move on”, ie the journalist would lose their story.
5. It’s worth noting that there is no 24 hour rule in the justice system.

HFC passed the report to the AFL Integrity Unit at least a week ago.

An obvious sign of guilt!

North Melbourne and Brisbane must sack Clarkson and Fagan after Hawthorn racism revelations

I have been pondering the ins and outs of whether Essendon stuffed up the Rutten/Clarkson business.

The answer is yes because they hesitated:

(i) the team was 2/11 after 13 rounds and the alarm bells were ringing. The club would and should have been thinking “We are going backwards – Rutten is not working”.
(ii) the team then have a mini revival; 4 wins out of 6, including a loss against Collingwood that was widely criticised as being the result of incompetent game management on and off the field;
(iii) Clarkson comes back onto the coaching market;
(iv) there is then a very decent win against the Roos – moves against Rutten are quelled
(v) then come three pretty feeble losses.

It’s pretty clear that the club should have started to engage Clarkson after Round 13.

It's time for Essendon to pull their heads out of the clouds

You say that “Richmond in 2016 avoided the former by retaining Damien Hardwick, and succeeded in the latter with a radical shift in their assistant coaching set-up.” If it’s true that the new 2017 coaching set up was the decisive factor behind the flag, it’s also true that it delivered immediately. It’s also the case that both Rutten and Caracella were part of that set up.

Did Rutten, et al set up the same sort of structure? If not, why not? If they did, why has it failed?

Pinching Clarko wouldn't have fixed the problem breaking the Bombers

I favour Hannibal Lecter if he’s available: articulate, good with the media, understands what makes people tick and takes no prisoners.

Three cliches in the one comment. Congratulations.

Dons dump Truck: 'Uncompetitive' season sees Rutten sacked as Essendon coach

Good article.

I don’t pretend to know what the real problems are, so these are random thoughts:

1. The Worsfold/Worsfold-Rutten/Rutten coaching regime has not worked: there has not been a noticeable improvement. This points to poor decision making at the top.

2. Hird was the AFL’s scapegoat for the supplements program and not organisationally responsible for it. Still, it would be a poor decision if he was appointed as coach because there are many media and fans that just won’t acknowledge the facts of Hird’s role. It would be a significant and needless distraction.

3. All the best Essendon teams had players that were intimidating. I’m not talking about blokes belting the oppo behind the play, but blokes that imposed themselves physically in the contest. Dodoro seems to have favoured recruiting skill (he’s done well) over mettle (he done poorly).

4. There looks to be a problem in the conditioning department. Players arrive looking powerful (Shiel, say) and start to look weedy. Players leave looking weedy (Daniher, say) and wind up looking powerful at their new club.

5. Key players that have left the club tend to have jumped rather have been pushed.

6. Dyson Heppell is a decent player, but not an inspirational on-field presence. The great Essendon sides fielded any number of people that would have been accepted as captain. I struggle to think of a successor for Heppell.

It's time for Essendon to pull their heads out of the clouds

Club and players to blame in Manly pride jersey fiasco as boycott highlights hypocrisy on other issues

You attack the ball at full speed and iron out any opposition player in your way, a la Rowbuttocks. I’m sure he only meant to shake Merrett up rather than take him high. It did both.

I don’t mind getting beaten but can’t abide spiritless surrenders.
