He’s not the Messiah. He’s a naughty boy.

That’s for Life of Brian fans,

The life of Sando: Was he the messiah?

Dean Bailey passing away at 47 is a tragic loss.
As outlined in the article he had the ultimate success with Port Adelaide as part of their coaching team and that underlines his talents. That he was unable to achieve the same level of success with Melbourne in no way detracts from his achievements. No matter how good a coach is, he is unable to win at the highest level without a base of quality players and that has been lacking at Melbourne for many years. The fact that Bailey took on the job and did what he believed was for the good of the club on a long term basis is testament to his commitment and character. That he was suspended for doing what he was paid and expected to do reflects badly on others, not on Dean Bailey.
The best tribute to Bailey was players he coached speaking fondly of his positive contributions to their development as players but more importantly as young men.

RIP Dean Bailey, footy's Mr Nice Guy

As you have noted the “Top Down” approach has been an abject failure, what about a “Bottom Up”.
ARU and Super 15 contracted players should be made to play a certain number of games each season for their club. Would solve a number of issues:
Costs would be minimal
Gives club players exposure to games with quality players
No new infrastructure required
Increase revenue for clubs
Builds momentum at the grass roots level

Admittedly not as sexy as a new competition but easy to implement and a good place to start.

The ARU's NRC is ambitious to a fault

I have no problem at all with a pom / welsh / irish / scot getting a kick in the head at the bottom of a ruck.
If it was an IRB board member it should be compulsory.

SPIRO'S Lions Tour Diary: Horwill cleared, but IRB and Lions must come clean

The point is that if we are not going to pick the best players we are seeting ourselves up for failure. Applies not just to Geo Smith but right across the team.

Your move next, Robbie Deans

I think your being a bit hard on Brian Taylor.
There are 3 patients in a mental health facility who think he is mildly amusing.

2013: the AFL crystal ball

Mitchell has played very little football over the past 2 years and has been selected on reputation, certainly not form.
Can’t see how changing the winger helps, the ball never gets to him.

Mitchell not happy at Waratahs axing

One child

A different solution to the 'third-teir' dilemma

The AFL have a bucket of money they need to spend so they thow a few dollars around on PR about getting international players. It’s a fairly good strategy given that the odds are that every now and again a few turn into useful players and everyone forgets about the duds.
It’s not like they are short changing the home grown players. It seems that the average AFL player is paid substanially more than an average ARL or Union player. After all they can’t pay Andrew Demterious any more than the $1.5m plus he currently cops.

GWS signs Dane out to make a bang in AFL

Salary cap is $5.4m for a team and your talking about $6m for 5 years is $1.2m a year for the coach.
Can see why the players are getting p#ssed it seems out of proportion ie coach versus player.

Storm hope Bellamy bound to NRL club

We coud have unrestricted drug use and see the 100m run in 7.5 seconds. Would it enhance our enjoyment in watching the event? Probably not.
The fact is that most people are against drug use however, I agree with the basic premise of the article being that detection and punishment for drug use has been an abject failure over a long period of time. To claim otherwise shows an inability to accept reality.

Why bother banning drugs in sport?

If it’s just for the “bums on seats” they could have got Lara Bingle at the same kind of money, and she probably would have more impact on the game than Folau.

Fitting Folau under cap a struggle: Rebels

I also gave up watching. Not worth the late night to watch the drivel the Wallabies where serving up.
I have never been a fan of sacking Deans but you make a good point about the WRC. If the Wallabies continue on their current path will McKenzie want the job when it comes around, he would be on a hiding to nothing.

Supposedly unlikely Spring Tour pass mark

Why a club would want a player that has said he does not want to go there is beyond me.

GWS weigh up signing Tippett

Good to see Mexted appear on the list, not sure of the ranking as he was certainly a class player. Always enjoyed watching him play even though he was responsible for sinking us a few times. Was really the first of the modern day No 8’s.

100 greatest All Blacks ever: 50 to 41

With more and more players changing codes League to AFL, League to Union, Union to league etc the marketing value of bribing players to change codes is getting less and less. For all the talk about it being a marketing success via “column inches” generated it must be a real worry for the AFL that all that marketing translated to abysmal attendance.
On a more cynical side did anyone think that Kevin Sheedy or Demtirious would say it was anything other than a success, they are the ones who spent the AFL money so to say otherwise would be to admit that they buggered up, hardly likely to happen.
As for Folau pocket the $2 mill and be happy,

The AFL's great Israel Folau flop

When Keith Miller retired from cricket they asked him why he was retiring when he was still in good form, his answer…..
“I’d prefer you asked me why I’m retiring, rather than why not?”

Dear Nathan Sharpe: the Lions are coming

I think Judd is lucky that Visy gave him time off to go to Arizona with the rest of the Carlton boys, however I am sure that he filled out a request form.
While it is not much fun to have the rules changed from season to season it apperas it should have been included from day one. It’s a bit like telling a few fibs on your tax return just because you get away with it once or twice don’t fall into the trap of taking the high ground.

Judd, Malthouse criticise AFL ruling

The key point as you said is that it is highly unlikely that Damien Oliver is the only jockey to have placed bets on rival horses.
The fact that more jockeys are not charged says a lot about how seroius racing clubs are about enforcing the rules. From a real world perspective it is a practice that will always be there and the current view that Oliver is the only jockey to do it is an insult to the publics intelligence.
Better to police it in a real way. Why not have a register of jockeys bets where they declare bets and they can be read in conjunction with the form guide. That would be interesting.

Racing needs to make a statement in Oliver inquiry

Another part of the puzzle with gifted players and coaches is a bit of a “meeting of minds”.
Some players really buy into the coach big time and as a result get some great results. Other better players might not buy in to the same extent but still acheive. It;s a bit of horses for courses.
While Bellamy is an outstanding coach he is known as Bellyache for good reason as he rarely seems happy. Would a player like Jonathan Thurston thrive under his coaching, maybe not. That is not an indictment on either Thurston or Bellamy it is just that a large part of the coach-player relationship comes down to personalities and that is something that cannot be forced.

If only he played for the Storm

Peeeko you are dead right.
On a list of things that need to be done at most schools “Helping the ARU” would rank very close to the bottom, and so it should.
The argument seems to be without some radical over haul of the schools Aust Rugby is doomed to failure, you could turn the whole thing on it’s ear and the net result would be zero it is a complete waste of time and effort. As you said schools are independent and their aims for the welfare of their students is a paramount. If what they do helps the ARU fine, if not what do they care.
A thing most people seem to ignore is that the schools run sports for all the students not just the aspiring wallabies, the structure of the competition is as much about the U13 E’s as it is about the 1St XV.

Schoolboy rugby needs a review

Chris, nothing like cold hard facts to settle the argument. Can you imagine the crap that McQueen would have had to put up with to get Geo Smith & Larkham selected against the Tahs crew?
You can see the same crap starting again now where people are talking up the new coach as the answer to everyone prayers and that as long as the Tahs team bus arrives on time they will win. With any luck there will be a change of attitude however seems like the same old same old.

Super squad building and why Cheika needs time

What it does is destroy any morale in the side.
Benn Robinson & TPN seemed to spend most of the Super 15 season having a cream bun eating contest and are probably still not it enough to play. Maybe that the trick to getting TPN to stop dropping the ball and throwing it away 6 or 8 times a match, tell him to treat the pill like his lunch.
Of all the sides the Brumbies are the team that got shafted the most and I can tell you what it will happen again next year.

Super squad building and why Cheika needs time

They might as well try something different as they have been going nowhere for a few years now.
They are a bit like the Tahs, notionally should be th strongest side in NZ but continue to disappoint.

Braid misses contract in young Blues squad

At some point the players themselves must be held to account for receiving above the odds under dodgy contracts.
There is obviously collusion betwen the club and player so to only punish the club is manifestly unfair.

The AFL and restraint of trade
