So me saying the Chiefs are favorites, but based on history you shouldn’t underestimate the Crusaders, is just “posturing”, but the Crusaders “ripe for the taking” isn’t…right…

Reds in peril, Brumbies battle to save home quarter: Super Rugby final week scenarios and predictions for every team

All I am saying is don’t underestimate the Crusaders, which I think you are.

I am perfectly content with the Chiefs as favourable to win, we have already won more than we could hope for in Saders land, but with your big talk, hope you don’t end up with egg on your face 😂

And the Crusaders being “ripe for the taking” is a hypothetical too…we can both play that game 😛

Seriously though, may the best team on the day win, and the Chiefs have been great this year 👍

Like you, Ken, I like to remove myself from group think on generalizations on ‘Aussie this, Kiwis that”.

Some respectful banter is always welcome, but I am happy to see the spotlight removed slightly from distasteful comments 👍

😂 The injuries are a concern for the Saders this year, but IMO our wider squad have shown that we can still produce good cattle!

Winning all but 1 game and beating the Crusaders twice will also count for nothing if the Chiefs get cooked in the final… 😛

Blues?? You mean Chiefs I reckon 😛 or are you eluding to the general vibe last year as a warning not to underestimate the Crusaders this year?

Last year Blues only lost 1 game to the Crusaders 3 losses in the rounds, but Blues well beaten in the final…

The Crusaders were “ripe for the taking” last year too when the Saders were in the exact same spot last year with 3 losses, and the Blues on 1 loss. Crusaders have won many titles away from home when, apparently, the Saders have looked “ripe for the taking”…
.
Injuries have hit the Crusaders hard this year, but they are still in 2nd place only 7 points behind the Chiefs despite that, so I wouldn’t underestimate them…

Yep, that is the scenario in a nutshell!

I think the Rebels have the best chance of an upset, unless Chiefs have already secured top spot by beating the Brumbies and decide to send all the best players home early and put out a B team vs the Force.

Rebels hit record score against Force to keep finals hopes alive as Gordon fires again

The Rebels must pull a upset win against the Brumbies in Canberra next week to make top 8, providing other upsets don’t happen.

Yep, I noticed that too. The Reds are only in a “must win” next weekend if a big upset happens on those games you mention…upset could happen, but not likely.

'That's a big loss': Reds' season hanging by a thread after losing both captains, lock for season

Point taken, they did rest 4 players and I stand corrected on that. Blues have a strong squad though.

'Put it all out there': Reds' finals hopes hanging by a thread as Barrett injured in Blues win

I think that with the Chiefs resting players last week showed that perhaps the Chiefs wider squad may be weak compared to 1st choice players, and the Reds have comparable talent in their wider squad as the 1st choice players as judged by Thorn.
.
The Reds facing a strong Blues side was a typical result for the Reds this season vs top 5 teams, and last week IMO, the Reds stoic defence and good play from the wider squad, combined with a lackluster Chiefs performance from their wider squad, puts some perspective on the differences in the Reds performance last week, and their
performance against the Blues, with perhaps some misleading expectations.

I don’t agree with NZ being ‘the best team in the world’ in 1999 and 2003.
.
Australia was the form team in 1999 RWC, and Aus had beaten NZ in the previous 4 out of 5 games, and NZ lost 5 games in a row in 1998.
.
England were the form team in 2003 RWC, with England beating NZ in the previous 2 matches.
.
In 2007 NZ was the form team.

I was almost disappointed that there was sod all to disagree on with the predictions 😛

Getting tips right, people agreeing with you without debate…you didn’t steal a crystal ball from a gypsy caravan by any chance?

If it’s just being competitive then Tahs have been right up there until the Gibson years derailed us.

That kind of hits on the real problem, and why the Brumbies have been more successful in recent times. It is mostly a coaching problem for the Tahs after Cheika, with the 2015 post RWC experienced players also leaving to make it harder. Same with the Reds post McKenzie.

Tahs and Reds still have talented players coming through, but what gives the Brumbies the edge is the coaching, and the system they nurture to maintain that to successive coaches.

I agree with your predictions and logic reasoning, Brett. Places 2 – 4 and 8th place have the most shades of grey, with minor upsets possible.

On the Rebels vs Brumbies, I thought the Rebels played a strong last 20 mins, which was promising to see, as so many games the Rebels have put in good 60 min games to collapse on the last quarter.

Your integrity as a sports writer is admirable on the Marinos situation. Some other writers should bow their heads in shame.

Thanks, Geoff. Great work!

The Wrap: In a race to rewrite rugby history, the bull--t rises to the top

Actually I take that back a bit for 8th place, as we have –

Reds (19pts) – Chiefs (a), Blues (h), Highlanders (a), Fijian Drua (a)
Highlanders (15pts) – Brumbies (a), Rebels (h), Reds (h), Blues (a)
Rebels (14pts) – Brumbies (h), Waratahs (a), Highlanders (a), Force (h), Brumbies (a)

I can see The Reds possibly losing all their games, having to travel away to play the Highlanders and Drua. Rebels may only beat the Force. Highlanders may win both home games vs Reds and Rebels and sneak into 8th place. It will be tight.

'Huge for us': McReight stars but Waratahs snap losing run against Reds in Super win

While it is possible for the Rebels to beat the Tahs and Highlanders, that is a big IF, as both those games are away from home and will favour the home team. The Rebels also have the Brumbies twice still to play. Reckon the Rebels are a long shot to make top 8.

I think looking at the current form and upcoming games, it will end the rounds with…
6th Tahs
7th Fijian Drua
8th Reds

The Rebels, Force, Highlanders, and Moana Pasifika will miss out in the finals IMO.

yep.

COMMENT: Few will remember Andy Marinos but history could paint him in a different light

This article is so uncharitable to Marinos, it reads like a smear job.

Better to say nothing and have people think you are a fool, than open your mouth and prove it, like in the case of McLennan at times…

COMMENT: Few will remember Andy Marinos but history could paint him in a different light

Appreciate that point, Adam.

Yeah, PeterK raised the same point, which I agreed that there is a plus for fringe NZ SR players, and I also can’t see a downside to extending AB eligibility to Aus based players 👍

RA chief's radical draft plan to revive Super Rugby, including Wallabies free to play for NZ clubs

Yeah, I agree with that exception to 4. NZ players playing in a Aus SR team should be eligible for AB selection probably too, in case a fringe NZ SR player ends up a bolter playing in Aus. I don’t think it would effect NZ at all extending eligibility to players playing in Aus,
