If we are not counting numbers then what the hell are we counting ffs? I’m just telling you what I see on websites reported by clubs if the numbers of teams playing in each grade in the shire. If you think they are lying then that’s fine with me.

You can’t assume crowd figures off a comparative population base. If that logic applies Canberra’s crowds should only be 7000 as a comparison to Brisbanes crowds and population size. Their average crowd is much higher than that.

So the NRL has 3 viable options for expansion. One in a new country (PNG), another in NZ which will lead to a nice North V South rivalry, and the last in, effectively, a new market in a new State (WA). No wonder the afl mob here are so annoyed with Vlandys. Our game is kicking ass right now.

In Brisbane there was an increase of over 100 teams to over 1100 last year on the previous year. That’s a big increase

Well with Sydney you are wrong. Each year I count the team registrations in each district. It’s not hard to do. In the Shire there was a definite increase of over 10% of teams on my count and the club reported an increase of 10% in players. The NRL also reported an increase in its annual report that measured up with my research. A thankless task I would add.

You could do what I do and analyse the club and team numbers by region. The shire definitely had a good increase last year. Overall participation increased across the country. Different areas fluctuate year by year but the increase was real.

I played rugby for 30 years. Loved it. I watch league. It’s a much better spectacle in my view. That’s proven by the crowds ratings and media attention it gets. It’s great fun to watch. As much as I loved playing rugby watching it bores me to tears. It’s definitely on the nose in Australia. Its profile is almost non existent. It would pay for union to learn from league in this country or it will soon be extinct.
