Juicy. Look forward to seeing if this pans out.

Wallabies young gun's RWC over ahead of do-or-die Test, intrigue over replacement as Ikitau returns for BaaBaas

There’s no conspiracy. Eddie Jones was hired by RA. That means RA consider him to be “one of them.” You stated that “Eddie just isnt private school enough for some” and my reply to that is that whatever school he went to is now irrelevant. He’s coached the Brumbies, the Wallabies and even England. It doesn’t get any more establishment (or “insider”) than that.

COMMENT: Eddie must be axed if he can't beat Wales - or the game will be in deep trouble in Australia

What was the problem with Rennie’s appointment? I thought he was OK. Wallaby fans need to understand the limits of what the head coach of a nation can do. The winning percentage has been steadily declining since McQueen. All the changing of coaches did was add some noise to the overall downward slide.

I was replying to your comment. There’s no conspiracy. When I wrote “insider” I meant “one of the group” or “part of the establishment.” You wrote that “Eddie just isn’t private school enough for some” but my counter is that it doesn’t matter anymore. They hired him. Why would they do that if they thought he wasn’t good or pure enough? Eddie Jones is a former player (non-wallaby), Brumbies coach, Wallabies coach and England coach. You don’t get any more establishment (or “insider”) than that. The fact he went to Matto public in the 70s is something no one cares about. He’s one of them.

Here’s hoping. I’m still worried that he has RA wrapped around his finger and is going to stick around for as long as possible – pretty much like he always does. Maybe Qld Reds being the exception.

As much as I didn’t like changing the coaching team, if you’re going to do it, then do it. Dan McKellar wasn’t that great and had a clear conflict of interest pushing a lot of Brumbies players – even when other (or even better) options were available.

Sorry, but I can’t go “all the way” with you here. Eddie was hired and celebrated by RA head office. They consider him an insider. Clearly. However, if Australia bounce back and show that the Fiji test was more of an aberration rather than catastrophe, I’ll happily change my tune somewhat. I say “somewhat” because I have a long memory and I’ve seen what (damage) Eddie can do long-term. Let’s never forget that he presided over Australia’s fall from RWC and B&I Lion champions to laughing stock in 3 years. This was a team with players like George Smith, Stephen Larkham, Stirling Mortlock, Chris Latham, Rocky Elsom and Nathan Sharpe.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he was the only problem. There is a VERY long history of RA (ARU) mismanaging everything, then making up new things that didn’t exist before and mismanaging those too. But these were quality players and should have been very competitive regardless. The long-term slide was on, but the cliff that the Wallabies fell off was all Eddie.

There’s a reason that RA signed off on Eddie taking a bunch of noobs to the RWC. Make no mistake: this was not Eddie’s decision alone, RA could have easily vetoed it. It would have had consequences, but they could have easily done it. This means that they were OK with a “rebuilding phase” (failure) from the outset. Eddie had successfully set expectations unbelievably low. They’re already leaning towards retaining him come what may. I just hope that, should the worst happen and we fail to clear the pool stage, that RA come to their senses and decide that this is “too much rebuilding, too fast.”

Yeah. I wasn’t happy with his appointment in the first place. I was briefly (and irrationally) hopeful when the tournament started because I could see some improvement, but it was too slow and appears to have stalled. Everything I was afraid of has come true, but without the usual positives (e.g. immediate gains). We just went straight to the end credits after a couple of opening scenes.

I have not lost all hope. I believe the Wallabies can beat Wales. (Can, not will). I don’t think Australia should be odds-on favourites, but the probability is not 0. I would put it at significantly below 50% though. However, regardless of the odds, if Australia fail to make the quarters for any reason, we should dispense with Eddie Jones. If we don’t he’ll hang around for years as a failure and drive Australian Rugby into the dirt.

I think benching Petaia and moving Kellaway to 13 is an option. He plays there regularly. We need Donaldson’s kicking, but also Kellaway’s stability and decision-making.

Having said that, we also need a forward pack and that’s our major problem. It doesn’t matter how good our backline play is if we lose the ball every 3rd or 4th breakdown.

Five Things: Eddie's mad scientist coaching group exposed - but Wallabies won't fear Wales like Fiji

I’m not convinced Donaldson was bad this game. His kicks in play were good, he missed one from the tee, was our top turn-over guy (LOL) and didn’t make any massive mistakes. I also don’t believe that “Gordon had to do his role at the back on defence” as there’s an argument to be made that Koroibete was out of position and caused the back three to be unbalanced. I’m not even convinced that Gordon is going to be replaced. He had one bad game. Tom Hooper had a shocker in his first match against the Boks. Now he’s a starter.

I agree with you that we need Kellaway though. I suggest we bench Petaia and play Kellaway at 13. Petaia hasn’t really set the world on fire, but he’s not bad. He can play multiple positions, so he’s very useful on the bench

WORLD VIEW: Wallabies' 'outwitted, outfought, outclassed' as Eddie 'trashes their whole World Cup strategy'

Wales, despite the lift, are in trouble. Even with all of the help they got from the officials, they only just won, and could have lost if Fiji didn’t muck it up and the end. Quarter-final exit at best.

'Officiating killed us': Fiji fury over 'grotesque' refereeing as Semi Radradra fumble lets Wales off hook

Silly comment. It was a close match and the officials could easily have had an effect on the result. If it were a blow-out, I would have some sympathy for that position.

'Officiating killed us': Fiji fury over 'grotesque' refereeing as Semi Radradra fumble lets Wales off hook

Yes. The REALLY OBVIOUS NO-ARMS IN THE FOREGROUND was ignored for a less obvious (but still no-arms tackle) infringement in the background of literally the same shot.

'Officiating killed us': Fiji fury over 'grotesque' refereeing as Semi Radradra fumble lets Wales off hook

Yeah, I don’t think anyone’s disputing the maul penalty. It’s the lack of other cards shown that is astounding. There should have been a card to Wales already before that. Then another one after. The ref also blew up a scrum that Fiji were looking to push-over. No reason was given for not allowing the advantage. No card either.

It’s OK. Beale’s not in the team so we’re in the clear.

Is it necessarily a net IP loss though? Coaches out/coaches in.

Kiss of death for Thorn's assistants with Wallabies walkout Brad Davis joining Reds revolution

The place-kicking especially is an obvious area to work on and, as you mention, there are REALLY obvious ways to work on it. I’m surprised that they haven’t done anything about this already.

Studs and duds: Eddie's 'wrongheaded' selections, Carter '100 percent a concern', 'weapon' fires at last

Yeah, I was actually a little encouraged by the game. They played the tournament favourites and not only didn’t disgrace themselves, but even dominated in some areas for some time. They also made many linebreaks against a really good defence. They need to really clean up the messy parts of their game (breakdown especially, but lineout/maul too). They also appear to be on the rise rather than already peaked or even falling. This guarantees exactly nothing of course, but I’ll take it.

Studs and duds: Eddie's 'wrongheaded' selections, Carter '100 percent a concern', 'weapon' fires at last

He’s been improving. So last year he was bad, this year he’s much better, though not amazing.

Studs and duds: Eddie's 'wrongheaded' selections, Carter '100 percent a concern', 'weapon' fires at last

I’m calling it now. Fines-Leleiwasa will be the preferred scrumhalf by the end of the tournament.

Studs and duds: Eddie's 'wrongheaded' selections, Carter '100 percent a concern', 'weapon' fires at last

Yes they do. The refs have up to two replays to make a decision and refer it upstairs. Farrell and Vunipola got a bunch of replays each. As did Scott Barrett.

'Not good enough': England in disarray as Fiji pull off historic win to emerge as World Cup's darkest horse

No reasons other than the obvious ones.

'Not good enough': England in disarray as Fiji pull off historic win to emerge as World Cup's darkest horse

Yeah. That whole thing looked and sounded very dodgy to me. It even looked bad if it was dodgy, as they could have probably done a better job at hiding it.
