Some interesting comments here.
Fezs are cool comments about the A league team being based in Auckland and not wellington with what he called “wellington” being a mistake.
Interesting giving the phoenix last year had three consecutive attendences on 21k (in Christchurch), 24k v Perth Glory and 34K v Newcastle. The attendences average 9 thousand. Come Novemeber we will average 11-12k. Cone feb it will be up to 20k. If we make the finals we will sell out the Westpac trust stadium.
Auckland is like the Gold Coast, it failed to connect with the community and the support reflected this.
Gold Coast as we see it from NZ were all talk when they formed, took their supporter based for granted and now are paying for this.
Perhaps they should take aleaf out of the Phoenixs book and start to engage with the community.
Our players have an open day, give huge amounts back to the community and now their support rivals the Hurricanes.
We sell huge amounts of merchandise and the Yellow fever get behind the team in a big way.
The fans even stump up for an annual young player scholarship.
Put it like this the relationship between the Phoenix and the fan base is like no other in the A League.
Perhaps Clive could come over and take some lessons or perhaps the A league could hire Tony Pignata who was instrumental in forming the Phoenix’x culture.
FYI the first song the Phoenix fans ever sang was “we’re not Auckland anymore”…

Gold Coast United are A-League's biggest mistake

The haka to All Black rugby is as relevant as the silver fern on the jersey.
If you are a non New Zealander you will never ever understand the importance of a warrior laying down the challenge before battle.
The only true way to respond to the haka is to stand your ground and look the challenger in the eye. You never smile, wink, (one only has to go back to a rugby league test when David Kidwell flattened Willie Mason for mouthing off at the Haka.you only turn your back if you are a coward and are afraid to accept the challenge.
The haka gets diminished when for example olympic or commonwealth team do one each time an person competes in an event, that is disrespectful to what the haka represents.
Woman should never perform the Haka, and the Haka should never be performed for a swimmer who finished sixth in a heat.
In rugby the haka only ever took on a meaningful part of the prematch ritual when Buck Shelford sorted it out and got the team doing it properly.
In response to people talking about Samoa, Tonga, Fiji doing challenges well I say it is part of the rich fabric of island rugby.
The IRB should keep silent about how a team responds to the challenge, also teams should also work out how they respond to the challenge.
By my reckoning there is probaly enough Maoris and PIs in the Aussie team for them to come up with their own. The All Blacks have two…maybe they can have one of ours…!

Is the Haka losing its relevance?

While a good keeper, he doesn’t suit the Phoenix culture and style…
Good Luck Danny..

Vukovic devastated but determined

We don’t owe anything to Australia However the FFA owe a big thanks to the All whites. we did what Pim didin’t, have A league players perform at the highest level with credibility. That is worth a lot to the A league.
This talk about the Phoenix being a defacto All white team is rubbish.
We had three on the field Paston, Bertos, Lockhead. Brown was injured, Sigmund warmed the bench.
Other A league clubs had a presence with kiwi players. Plus there was a couple with no clubs (Elliot and Milligan) and a part timer who held a day job as a banker.
The Phoenix playing 11 normally has around four kiws playing (Paston, Bertos, Lockhead, Brown) so John Davidson you have it wrong. Sigmund will struggle this year.to get on the field with the signing of Jade North.
People say we had an easy route, well Bahrain was the fifth best team in Asia, and they missed opportunity after opportunity in the first leg, a penalty in the second. Goals win matches.
Having NZ and Australia at the world cup was great for football at this end of the world, plus great for the strength of the A league.
While we don’t owe a debt of thanks, we do acknowledge now everyone is benefitiing from this and have opportunities that 18 months ago did not exist.
I suggest this if the All whites did not qualify and the Phoenix finished last would there be this much publicity?

Why the All Whites owe thanks to Australia
