Interesting article.

As a Lions fan (and like every other fan), my emotions for the club get mixed up with rational argument (there a many many people on this site that make that mistake). You’re analysis is right when Collingwood kicked 4 quickly against us we weren’t able to stem the bleeding in that period of the game. And in other games, I’ve seen us roll over and lose by lots given this attack. A game against Melbourne a couple of years back when they were immerging sticks out. We were comfortable at half time…ahead by 20-25. Then they flicked the switch and we lost by about 30 . A 50 point second half drubbing.

The game last week could have been the same. We leaked 4 goals in quick time against a very good team (be it missing some of their best). But we steadied and won comfortably.

To me, this suggests growth. We’re a much better team this year. But we do struggle when we our best isn’t working. I’m thinking of games against Hawthorn and Gold Coast. We weren’t able to challenge. I kind of feel it is more between the ears than anything. And if we can’t get up for games in September, then we truly aren’t worthy.

Regarding the AFL premiership metrics, I like them, but the analysis is too basic. It suggests that all metrics are equally important when I’d suggest they aren’t. Also, I’d suggest combinations are also important. I’d suggest having a spread of superior metrics will produce different results than being dominant in just (say) defense. But no account of that is included in the analysis. So, like mission impossible, the analysis is fun but really lacks substance.

Is 2023 the year Brisbane takes their AFL premiership chance, or is it mission impossible?

A wise freo coach said its not as bad as it bad as it seems.
Then he went to the saints and freo are shite.
See you next year dorkers!!

Footy Fix: Boring, brainless and utterly broken - it's time for Freo to find Plan B

How much longer do we tolerate WCE performances before we start talking about relocation to tassie?

Six Points: Time for Eagles and Simpson to part ways, and why wounded Weitering wasn't what cost the Blues

The mental part of elite sport is probably more than what’s appreciated.
When you think about an individuals performance, there are be 4 major contributing factors:
– skills / ability (what is their ceiling)
– physical shape (injury, overworked, tired etc)
– mental state (confidence, belief, resilience)
– opposition performance (I would perform better playing in my son’s team than against the Demon’s). And their performance is dictated by their skills, physical and mental state.

Assuming this is correct, if the same teams played each other twice with the same preparation (hence, same skills and same physical shape in both games), any quantum variances in result would be due to mental state. Would a players mental state be the same when taking a set shot for goal be the same at practice and after the siren to win the GF? And how would that affect the outcome.

In response to your comment, the mental game of Melbourne will be unreal. They are going to think they can win it from anywhere. Djockervich is a brilliant tennis player cause he can be 2 sets down and still feel like he’s got the game within reach. I can remember a Melbourne Storm game where they were losing 16-4 at 1/2 time against a lowly opposition and you just felt that them winning was an eventuality. It was.

The Dees will have the same belief. Brisbane will hope they can win when they’re behind. As will Port. Dogs will think they can win. Melbourne will know.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'Brisbane keep failing on the big finals stage'

Really like the look of the Lions this year (as most supporters do of their clubs at this time of year).

But I think your comment about downhill skiers is salient for Brisbane. When things are going their way, they cash in. For this reason, they had the highest ‘for’.

Its their ability to turn the tide when things aren’t goin their way. This is where Melbourne impressed last year. Round 12, Brisbane was up by 20 points at half time only to lose by 22 (40 odd point turn around). Similarly, Melbourne did it in the Grand Final.

Who have the ability to stand up when things are going against them? Champion players in the past include Voss, Hodge, Ablett, Selwood.

Who for Brisbane? Potentially Neile and he’ll be a lot better this season than last. That hasn’t been discussed much. Maybe Zorko? Robinson and Lyons almost, but don’t quiet have the class. Unfortunately Daniher and Charlie tend to drop their heads when things aren’t going their way. If there are any that can, it will need to come with some of our developing players who are yet to reach their peek. I’m hoping McCluggage, Bailey or Starcovich step up. They’re good enough but they need to take another big step. They are the key. With them pushing themselves into the elite, we can hope to be in the mix for the next 3-5 years.

Bit off topic Don but interested in how you respond. I admire your bullish take on your teams chances. You’ve always back your boys with never a bad word.
But your mob hasnt done much since inception. First game in 1995, so that’s 27 seasons for one GF. Are you disappointed with that? I’m sure they’ve delivered much enjoyment but I’m sure you would have liked more results (like every other supporter of every team ever). But I want to understand what you think? Do you reckon 1 GF in 26 years under performing? Should they have done better with a strong supporter base, sound financials and a large pool of talent to nurture. And equally important, why do you think results haven’t gone your way?

The four players who could make or break Brisbane Lions in 2022

I predict the Lions will be comfortably better than Freo this year. With luck (or little bad luck) they’ll be top 4 and should challenge again. They are more settled and have better cattle this year than last. Freo have some ins coming in from injury and at least 1 quality out. From my observations, top quality teams are settled, experienced and have numerous champion players peaking. I don’t think that is Freo.

Ba ha ha! Lot to over come. 5 extra wins, 50% better % (you’ll need to score 150 points this season for every 100 you scored last) and a 10+ goal smashing in Perth. Massively over confident (with no substance) claim.

Broncos came bloody close to winning that game. Had the field goal attempt gone through, people would have been talking about ‘good teams find a way to win’. Well they found it, didn’t execute. They had 3 opportunity to win the game in the last 5 mins and failed.
In saying that, they scored some lucky tries. So in no way should we feel hard done by.
For me, forget issues with the halves. Broncos don’t drop so much ball at the beginning of the second half, we win the game. People say Melbourne are clinical. What does that mean? They don’t fail to complete 5 sets when the pressure is on. Melbournes worst game is a lot closer to their best…that’s the difference. In attack, they don’t rely as much on individual brilliance or broken play speed. They are more successful in structured attack and don’t stray much from the plan. That won’t happen for Brisbane over night – with a new coach – but I reckon we’re on the right track.

Another tough task awaits the Broncos against the Roosters
