He looked good in the first innings, yes 3/44. However his second innings was hardly anything to write home about, 3/127 off 20 overs. Ponting and Clarke got out to soft dismissals.

Spin to be the difference in South Africa

Newlands and Port Elizabeth are the equivalent of the SCG, that is to say they are good for spinners. Not a spinners’ haven. Only Centurion is a fast and bouncy wicket. Lyon is a quality spinner, certainly better than anything that South Africa have ever produced since their readmission. He outbowled Graeme Swann. What more do you want from him? De Villiers does struggle against spin, a simple look at how he has gotten out confirms that. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/44936.html?class=1;template=results;type=batting;view=dismissal_summary

Spin to be the difference in South Africa

Given the pitches will be more conductive to spin than pace, and South Africa’s lack of a quality spinner, it seems likely that Australia should be able to avoid major collapses. However, with Doolan and Marsh in the squad, I have deep concerns about our batting.

Spin to be the difference in South Africa

You’re right. No one criticises MJ for getting batsmen out to what are mostly poor shots that they could have ducked. Nor should he be. It takes good bowling to produce bad shots. All of our bowlers have bowled brilliantly, and as a result, England are not confident in their strokeplay. That’s what a bowling unit does, every bowler applying pressure produces results like that for the batsmen

England's shameful tour continues to spiral downward

Lyon can take wickets, his best in tests is 7/94 against India. The big problem with him is that he’s still learning his game, and needs a bit of assistance to take wickets that Australian pitches dont give him. He’s more of a threat overseas than here. Lyon’s still learning, and in 2-3 will probably be a major threat anywhere in the world.

How the Australian bowlers have worked as a group

You mean the same Khawaja who averaged 19 against England? The same Khawaja that’s never scored a test century? The same Khawaja with an average 6 runs behind Hughes in both tests and FC cricket? Please, Khawaja might have a better technique than Hughes, but he just doesnt score the same runs.

It's time we all forgot about Phil Hughes

The lunch thing I agree with, definitely. However, your point about the toss is nonsensical. That’s part of the flavour of the game, and it has been for 140 years. However, I do agree with changing a team after the toss is called

Here are some rules I’d like to change:
1. Front foot no ball law changed back to what it was in the 60s, which allowed bowlers to overstep the line with their front foot as long as their back foot was behind the bowling crease. This would allow umpires to better focus on each delivery, and would ensure that bowlers gain a more fair playing field.
2. Get rid of the limit of 2 fielders on behind square on the legside and allow 3 short pitched deliveries per over. Restrictions on short pitched bowling came into place in an era without helmets, arm guards or chest guards. Now that protective technology has been enhanced, the risk to the batsmen of injury or death is greatly reduced. The rules should now change to reflect this. Bodyline was only an issue because of the real chance of death. With this gone, short pitched bowling is now a legitimate tactic.
3. Re introduce a runner for injured batsmen. It’s annoying when you see a batsmen unable to score and play properly because he’s denied a runner.
4. Speed up over rates by way of increased fines for failure to comply. Fine the whole fielding team, not just the captain, and if the umpires believe the batsmen are wasting time, fine the batting pair as well. Obviously it has to be used with discretion, i.e. if 5 wickets fall in a session, the rate will be slower for a good reason.

Time to change cricket's antiquated rules

You’re a lyre, that joke’s new!

England facing risky selections for Adelaide

It does seem unlikely that he did announce in an Panesar with an accent. None of the players heard it, and I havent seen any of the fans or anything saying that they heard this guy do anything like what he’s been accused of. Looks like the usual, huge overreation at the slightest hint of racism.

Cricket announcer denies Indian slur

If there was anything directed at Carberry, Which I hope there wasn’t, then it’s still English hypocrisy. They’ve called us convicts for years and years. That is as offensive as a racist slur, it goes right to our heritage.

Michael Clarke's sledging isn't the story, our reaction is

I love this! That’s what Anderson’s response should have been, a sledge back, not running to the umpires. Cricket’s as much a mental game as it is physical, and good sledging can be worth as much as a wicket or 20 runs.

Michael Clarke's sledging isn't the story, our reaction is

The problem I have with the Haka is that the All Blacks dont let other teams respond to it. Remember France trying to advance at their Haka? They got in serious trouble. It’s a bloody war dance, not a welcome to country. The All Blacks are just like the English, they dish it out, but they can’t take it.
