Absolutely correct! Replays clearly show that Lafai got there first, held his ground and braced for impact. He is entitled to stand in front of the player taking the ball provided he is still and doesn’t move to “escort” Garrick off the line of the ball. In this situation Lafai does not have to have “eyes for the ball” as one of the commentators suggested. The referee clearly explained this to DCE although most post match replays didn’t include this explanation. The on field officials were clearly satisfied and did not see the need to refer to the bunker.

This is what the ref said to DCE:- “..Daley, in our opinion he’s taken position early. He’s allowed to be there. He doesn’t get there at the same time…”. I agree that not one commentator (on Fox Sport at least) said the call was right, but that does not necessarily make it an incorrect call. I am simply agreeing with the officials who are expected to know the rules intimately.
