I’ve been thinking about this a little more through the day. Not to put you under too much pressure after what must have been a gargantuan effort in putting this together, but could you imagine a Rest of the World version of the W team?
If you use Howstat’s approach to categorising players, you could field a team like:
1. John Wright
2. Kane Williamson
3. Frank Worrell
4. Everton Weekes
5. Clyde Walcott
6. Frank Woolley
7. BJ Watling
8. Chris Woakes
9. Wasim Akram
10. Waqar Younis
11. Courtney Walsh
(12. Bob Willis)
Two of New Zealand’s best top order players followed by three West Indian all-time greats, an all-rounder with nearly 60,000 first class runs and a very safe pair of hands in BJ Watling with the gloves. I don’t think any other letter’s side could boast a better pace attack than what this side has – though I suppose mainly because of how Howstat classifies Urdu names (but how else would you do it?). Anyway, if you add Warner and Warne to that team, I don’t think anybody could beat it (though M would come close).

The Australian cricket all-time great alphabet teams: Who wins the Alphabet Cup?

Imagine bowling to that W team. Stuff of nightmares. And you could make it even stronger if you take Watto over one of your quicks as others suggested on your W article 😱

The Australian cricket all-time great alphabet teams: Who wins the Alphabet Cup?

Massive congratulations to South Africa. I don’t think they always got the credit they deserved leading up to the final, at times throughout the tournament they played some vintage Bok rugby. Today a classic example. Very deserving winners.

And as delighted as I am that England didn’t win, I feel they should still be recognised for their tournament. They have really turned it around from four years ago. They should be proud.

CHAMPIONS: Springboks strike late to win third Rugby World Cup

Defence was fine in the first half. It fell apart after they got tilted by the forward pass calls and let the floodgates open.

That suggests a problem with mental strength rather than technique to me.

Apart from the lineout and the scrum which have obviously been a disgrace, I think the Wallabies have been alright. All Blacks are just better, and have a vastly superior pack.

I would also suggest that the complaining about the refereeing is probably justified. Forward pass calls in particular seem inexplicable, but better the officials get this out of their system now than at the World Cup.

Lehmann fostered a team culture that has resulted in the players thinking it’d be okay to cheat.

It doesn’t matter if he knew about it or not, he’s the coach and therefore responsible.

Six players that Australia must ban from the fourth Test

I’m not old enough to remember Greg and Trevor Chappell’s moment of infamy, but this has surely got to be right down there with it as one of the darkest days in Australian sports history. You have to wonder what kind of culture they cultivate in the team that would lead them to think that this is okay.

You are absolutely right, Lehmann shouldn’t be left out of this conversation if it happened under his watch.

Australia left without a team to love after Smith cheats the game

Smith has to go. Bancroft has to go. Anybody who knew about this beforehand and went along with it has to go. That side of it at least seems straightforward to me.

What seems a little muddier is who knew what and when. The ‘leadership group’ seems like an awfully vague term to me.

I reckon the Terriers could hold Barca on their day! 😉

Hooper? Where?

Pocock upset with Force decision

The Reds style of Rugby may suit him more as well. Although, I suppose we can’t make assumptions about how McKellar will want to have the Brumbies playing in the long term.

New Reds signing to provide fullback cover for Hunt

Not quite sure what the issue is here. Are you upset that Margaret Court Arena might be renamed, or are you upset that Margaret Court was the subject of abuse?

Thing is, neither of those has anything to do with free speech.

The people who own Melbourne Park have the right to name their arenas whatever they please. It’s their property, their branding. If they were to rename MCA to something else, that’s 100% their prerogative to do so. It’s not about punishment or reward, it’s simply a business decision; ‘do I care that a person associated with my brand is expressing X opinion?’. If the answer is yes, then maybe they rebrand. But that’s up to the owners.

As to Margaret Court being the subject of abuse, I agree that it’s disappointing that people can’t discuss things politely, but the same applies to her doesn’t it? Well, she used her free speech to insult and diminish gay people. So as far as I can see, what went around came around. If she’s gonna dish it out, maybe she should also be prepared to receive it.

Margaret Court's legacy is about more than opinions

It’s not often that a player who gets hyped up as much as Cummins actually goes on to exceed expectations. He’s the real deal, for me the penny dropped when watching him bowl in India.

Wonderful thing, technology. Fixed all the things that were broken, and now it’s fixing things that weren’t.

Should cricket umpires make way for more technology?

Not to mention a certain S. R. Waugh who had a career average of 37 with the ball…

Australia needs a fifth bowling option but it ain't Mitch Marsh

What a strange world we now live in when visiting captains choose to bowl first in Adelaide and pundits argue over which part-time spinner to take to the WACA.

Australia needs a fifth bowling option but it ain't Mitch Marsh

Yes, but if they kept doing that they’d run out of umpires.

Stranger things have happened, although I can’t remember when.

Anybody can have a bad game. The trouble is people rarely tend to forget your mistakes, particularly if you’re an umpire.

It could be argued that the source of the sound was something other than the ball hitting anything.

Not saying that I believe that, but it’d be hard to disprove.

Yes, you have to feel poor old Chris Woakes has been robbed of a maiden century this afternoon.

Barmy army seem to have gone very quiet now. They have done a wonderful job of lifting their team up to now, though, so good on ‘em.

I don’t think there’s any controversy so much as there is doubt. An England fan could argue that the snicko noise could have come from some other source.

In any case it was given out on field, so with no DRS it would still be out.

Q: Why did Stoneman drop that catch?

A: Because he had hard hands!

Thank you, I’m here all week! Try the veal.
