Declaring in the 3rd session of Day/Night tests is tactically sound, unlike declaring on a dead pitch against a team with the top 3 ranked batsmen in the world, short of 400 runs.

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

Yeah the english thought they were playing a day night test! 😂

A day one pitch with the worst recorded deviation of any day in 17 years of records.
Yes part of that is the lack of swing caused by the perfect weather, but still no 1st day pitch should be in the bottom 20% of results since the lack of bowler assistance on day one places too much emphasis on winning the toss and batting.
We wan’t a contest, not a one day match.

Yep, the English bowlers have stated they love the attacking fields they have set under bazball because even though they go for more runs, they knock sides over quicker and thus bowl less. This pitch was so flat that 500 runs was par for the course. The only way this won’t be a draw is if the pitch starts breaking up, so the objective is to maximise the runs in the first inning while extending the innings for as long as possible so that the other side has to bat on a deteriorating surface. Just like in India, the only way to win if you lose the toss and bowl is to go massive in your first innings so you don’t have to bat again.

Unless some heavy cloud cover had rolled in and you expected some swing, there is no logical reason to declare part way through day one. All they have done is take the shine off the new ball under easy batting conditions.

What do I want to see? England having to take a 4th new ball!
Let’s show them what attritional cricket is!

Well the 1st pitch is looking like a batsman’s wicket. So Starc will definitely play and Lyon will have a big say. Hopefully we win the toss and score 600. England really needs to win this one or they could easily be on a hiding to nothing.

Flem’s Verdict: Openers under pressure but Aussies look too strong all-round for Ashes mission to conquer Bazball

Aaron Finch would be a perfect bazball opener.
There is a reason Aaron Finch doesn’t make the test squad.
Because Test cricket is a battle of averages, not run rates.
So all Australia need to do is ensure they don’t give England a chasable target on a concrete strip and the bazball strategy falls apart. The key to home success is ensuring the bowling side has favorable conditions that the opposition is not used to. So England is playing with fire with this strategy.

The Ashes: Who will have the answers?

Based on all time player ratings Rhino is our 5th best bowler of the modern era after McGrath, Cummins, Warne and Lillee. Such a tragedy he didn’t play more!

Flem’s Verdict: Boland must play in first Ashes Test after starring role in Australia’s WTC final domination

Except when Starc scores a 30 you might have a batsmen up the other end scoring 50, and a 80 run tail end partnership alters test outcomes.

Flem’s Verdict: Boland must play in first Ashes Test after starring role in Australia’s WTC final domination

Depends on the conditions, which is a bit of a mystery for Poms who are into bazball! Starc comes into his own in flatter conditions which you wouldn’t normally expect in the UK. And Hazlewood has played 8 tests since 2020, that’s a major liability.

I think you might find a certain Pat Cummins is our best pace bowler 🙂

Flem’s Verdict: Boland must play in first Ashes Test after starring role in Australia’s WTC final domination

Depends on how bowler friendly the pitch is. UK would normally be to Hazelwoods strength, but what are they going to serve up for bazball?

Flem’s Verdict: Boland must play in first Ashes Test after starring role in Australia’s WTC final domination

Starc is less of a liability now we have Green in the team since there is less pressure to bowl him if he is off the boil. As for Starc vs Basball, Starc’s ODI performances indicates that may not go well for the batsmen.

Flem’s Verdict: Boland must play in first Ashes Test after starring role in Australia’s WTC final domination

I’d be happy to give him a rest if we win the first 3 tests!

'My favourite player': Brilliant Boland gets ultimate praise from Cummins after leading Aussies to WTC final victory

That long tail has been less of a problem since Carey replaced Paine. Not to mention Mitchell Marsh vs Green at 6. The only glaring weakness in our batting line up is Warner at the moment.

'My favourite player': Brilliant Boland gets ultimate praise from Cummins after leading Aussies to WTC final victory

Hazelwood is clearly the weak link now, he has only played 8 test since the start of 2020 and is constantly getting injured. And loosing a bowler mid test can put you at a huge disadvantage for the rest of the series. Starc is frustrating by being so hot and cold, but our attack, including Lyon, looks one dimensional when he doesn’t play.

Well they only drew because of their good DRS reviewing. Hardly the traditional contest of skill! 🙂

Australia and India are clearly the two best Test teams

837 runs after that. Thats a record!

Labuschagne closing in on Smith's mark

Just make it so you only get a bowling replacement in the second innings from an injury in the first.

Cricket injury replacements are a reasonable concept, until you start thinking about it

You will find they lost their chance when the failed to take Labuschagne’s wicket despite a new ball on the first night when the green of the pitch meant it swung the most.

Australian bowling trio runs through New Zealand for emphatic first-Test win

NZ got 10 overs with the second new ball on the first night and failed to take a wicket.
How Labuschagne wasn’t man of the match is beyond me. The Key to winning day night tests is having set batsmen survive the night session. The moment one gets out you loose a clump of wickets.

With variable bounce the spinners will also be a handful. Labuschagne is obviously the best of the part timers, but Head and Smith can also roll the arm over.

Australia in control despite Josh Hazlewood's injury

First class record this year
8 centuries
14 50s
2500 and counting runs

Labuschagne shines against impressive NZ attack

Maddinson is definitely a dark horse for the side.

It’s open season as the scramble for top-order runs begins
