Yeah like the ICC looking the other way when India watered one side of the pitch. In this case it looks like someone had swapped out all the old balls and the Umps had nothing suitable to choose.

Umpires under fire over ball change with Khawaja, Ponting fuming over English bowlers getting dramatic swing their way

The difference between the two series was Smith scoring 774 runs from 7 innings last time. This time there have been 7 individual century scorers with Australia up 4 to 3. And when you consider the stats only blew out in England’s favour due to this match, where australia left their spinner out for an extra batsmen with a mind to the draw which they achieved, then effectively Australia have hit their goals by 3 to 1.

Flem’s Verdict: Aussies earned the Ashes urn well before rain put a dampener on England's chances

They should have declared with a 100 run lead considering the pitch conditions and the lack of an Australian spinner. With the rain coming they needed to give themselves time to take 20 wickets, instead they focused on batting australia out of the game. I mean Brook and Stokes played sedately after coming in with a lead already by ~60th over and they batted for 107 overs. So they wasted a good 40 overs (more if you count their over rates) in a must win game. It was as bizarre as the 1st test declaration!

English records, he’s a few off Warne’s 195 wickets, and McGrath is just ahead on 157.

600 reasons to smile: Broad joins exclusive club as Aussies throw away start after start on frustrating opening day

So it seems the council of cricket selectors had been informed of the prophecy of the “Three Maligned Mitchells”
The 1st maligned by the enemy, the 2nd maligned by the hero, and the 3rd maligned by all.
And at their chosen time all 3 would become mortal hosts to the “Spirit of Cricket” whose wrath shall be cast upon the whinging poms.
And all shall be brought beer when encountered at the pub!

Marsh madness! Former whipping boy to the rescue with brutal ton as Wood five-for routs Aussies

The English started this in 1882!
“The match was fiercely contested, as evidenced by W. G. Grace’s gamesmanship in running out the naïve 21-year-old Sammy Jones, who had been batting well with his captain. Murdoch hit one into the legside, and Jones reached the other end comfortably in time to make the single. He then left his crease to go and attend to a divot on the wicket. Grace whipped off the bails and appealed. Square-leg umpire Bob Thoms delivered his verdict: “If you claim it, Sir! Out!”[13] Murdoch’s protests fell on deaf ears; the run-out was quite legitimate, but Grace’s unsporting behaviour irked the Australians”

'Bloody oath I would': Head accuses bleating Bairstow of blatant hypocrisy over Ashes flashpoint

I agree about Lords being the wrong pitch for Starc, however considering Bazball tactics his No3 ranking in ODI is probably more appropriate than his test ranking!

Flem's Verdict: One of the great wins of all time puts Aussies in box seat for Ashes as problems start mounting for England

The real question is has Khawaja done enough calorie burning to earn himself an upgrade from diet to full sugar celebratory coke?

The Liebke First Ashes Test report card: 'It's fun when England don't give up at the first sign of a challenge'

Khawaja is a 10. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Every player rated from the first Ashes Test: Awesome Uzzy, ridiculous Root as Aussie twin towers crumble

Yep, that Declaration gave Australia the chance to win rather than possibly batting us out of the game on day one.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC! Clutch Cummins sees Aussies home in Ashes instant CLASSIC

To be fair Smith has scored 31 centuries at an average 0f 60, while Watto burned reviews with 4 centuries @ 35.

'It might not survive': Bazball is a cult and Poms should be embarrassed about claiming they're Test cricket's saviours

Those 3 quicks only bowled 48 overs so far, not a huge workload by 1st innings standards. In comparison Green only bowled 6 overs. And by getting Smith out Stokes has greatly reduced the potential workload of the other bowlers.

Uzzy's the man! Khawaja's finest ton keeps Aussies afloat, but advantage England after top-order failures

Marcus Harris mostly. Uzzie was previously at 3. Haven’t had a decent opening pair since Chris Rogers retired. (and with Warner over the hill we still don’t)

Uzzy's the man! Khawaja's finest ton keeps Aussies afloat, but advantage England after top-order failures

At least he got done by a good ball. Promising signs for Lyon.

Uzzy's the man! Khawaja's finest ton keeps Aussies afloat, but advantage England after top-order failures

With our long tail and a pitch starting to break up, things are on a knife edge. Really need a lead to have any chance.

Uzzy's the man! Khawaja's finest ton keeps Aussies afloat, but advantage England after top-order failures

I think we’re pretty happy to be with in with half a chance after a poor batting performance. We are only in the game because the declaration and a couple of missed opportunities from Bairstow (after his batting saved them).

Uzzy's the man! Khawaja's finest ton keeps Aussies afloat, but advantage England after top-order failures

Reminds me more of an indian pitch than a MCG drop in. Bat large in the 1st innings, because at some point it becomes unplayable.

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

You mean kudos to the pitch curators for the ODI pitch!

Harry Brook’s dismissal was epically strange!

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

The English batsmen have demanded flat pitches in recent ashes battles so they could cope with the Aussie bowling, only for them to get flogged by the Aussie batsmen and spend 6 sessions in the field. Then the bowlers demand green tops and roll us for <100.
You would think they would learn….

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

England has declared for less than 400 on the flattest english pitch ever measured, while facing a team containing the top 3 ranked batsmen in the world, plus Khawaja at 9, plus Warner who you really don’t want sticking around, with an ancient bowling line up including a retired spinner with a 65 bowling average against australia.
Unless they get some cloud cover and Jimmy starts swinging it all over the place then England is not well positioned.

I think even Warner is excited to face Broad on this pitch!

There’s a fair chance Head won’t be batting till day 3!

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

Chin music is the traditional remedy for batsmen playing out of their crease. Something the Aussies seem to have forgotten. Not playing Starc on that pitch was a poor call. In hindsight dropping Boland would have been the correct move based on 1st inning performance. They should have look at ODI rather than test bowling records.

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

If australia had won the toss they would have been aiming to score double/triple centuries and declare in the 6th session after grinding the opposition bowlers into the dust. Cameron Green man not have had to bat!
