Attendances were pretty strong for the past month. By that I mean that the average attendance for each round was very similar to the year-long average, and that’s a very positive development because usually, the average starts to dip downwards from the mid-point of the season.
Also, a couple of weeks back we had a decent rating result on 10Bold, can’t remember the game.
Both these bits of news are good developments for the time of year when the Winter football codes start up and basically take over the whole of the media.
I would not be surprised if we experience another slight increase in average attendances next season (will finish at around 7,500 for this season).
But…the days of having 10k+ average attendances across a whole season are well and truly gone, and it’s probably impossible to run a professional league that can only muster 8k in average attendances over the long run.

Is an elimination Sydney derby enough to paper over the A-League's cracks?

I enjoyed watching this yesterday, and while SFC as clearly superior on the day, I don’t think the scoreline reflected the gap between the two sides.
Really good attendance too, I’m wondering whether that’s a record for a womens club game in Australia?

Alessandro has been, and is, a gem.
That twitter story is pretty embarrassing for everyone in a leadership role in Australian Football, and really, says a lot about us as a football country.
I would love it if someone could find a role for him such that he remains in Australia.

Granted – but still, I think Mariners season stacks up the best, so yeh, I’d have them starting as favourites to go through.
I’m assuming they get to host the prelim at Gosford (but don’t know that to be fact).

Looking like a City vs Mariners grand final.
Hopefully that will attract enough fans to Sydney to make it a big event.

A-League Round 26 talking points: Mariners seal top-two finish, Rudan's revival complete, time up for Townsend

I notice that currently there are a number of warehouses sitting in and around the site where the new stadium will be built.
I wonder whether a few hundred thousand dollars of the total project cost could be dedicated to fitting out one or two of the warehouses to allow the homeless to set up their swags during the Winter.
We could also provide flu shots for those living under the poverty line , so that the site can meet sporting pursuits as well as satisfy important housing and health needs.
Everyone wins.

Do Tasmanians really want a brand new stadium?

All the top Matildas play in the growing top European leagues, and most would be making pretty good money.

That’s the great promise that the ALW can hold out. Try and get a senior game at a young age, maybe still finishing school, try and break into the Young Matildas, get yourself in the shop window to play in Europe where you can earn excellent money.

But I wouldn’t be holding out too much hope of earning a good living playing in the ALW….perhaps ever.

This is good news.
There were a couple of tough years there for all sports.

How Rugby Australia clawed its way back from 'the cusp of catastrophe' to first profit in four years

Here in Sydney, NRL clubs prosper on pokies revenue, in other words, their prosperity comes from the misery of low income people losing their money in their pokies palaces.
In a perfect world, to make money in such manner would mean far less government funding.

Seems to me that crowds have been very good last couple of rounds, and that’s with the other football codes having started (and the NRL is breaking all sorts of records).

You’d have to think that the closeness of the table, with very few dead rubbers, must explain a lot about why crowds have been so good of late.

The biggest irony of this A-League season is that it's the most entertaining campaign in years

I’m not really seeing what the issue is?

Inequality of the conversion a gloriously flawed part of rugby codes - no need to change rules for women’s kicks

She is currently Australia’s no. 1 sportsperson, by a long, long way.
Daylight is second.

What legacy will the Women's World Cup leave on Australian football?

The WWC will be massive, the better the Matildas do, the bigger it will be, but in all cases, it will be a raging success. We know that much already.

But…the nature of these massive events is that they are very much about the moment, so by definition, you can’t look beyond the moment, and that moment can never be repeated. It’s pointless even hoping that it gets repeated.

The growth in women’s football will continue on the current trajectory, and to be honest, that’s good enough.

On a related matter, let us all be reminded that the Matildas will host Canada at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium during the group stage. It’s the city’s 3rd best stadium, hosting one of the key games of the whole group stage.

In hindsight, should we have fought to play this game at one of Melbourne’s bigger stadiums?

What legacy will the Women's World Cup leave on Australian football?

Mid
I have followed your musings on this matter with interest for a while now.
They are extraordinary numbers, in terms of the broadcast revenue representing such a tiny percentage of total revenue.
Indeed, so extraordinary, I think it’s very difficult to try and mount a case for following a similar strategy in the Australian context (although in a few years time, necessity may well force our hand).

The A-League is set for a thrilling climax, but will fans turn up for the finals?

Some important games coming, there’s still a fair bit of jockeying for the placings in the top 6.
The Nix and SFC have a reasonable advantage with two games to go (3 points plus goal difference), but if the Nix lose away to the Wanderers, that might put them back with the chasing pack.
And incredibly, while I don’t think they deserve to be in the hunt, the Roar has a home game against SFC, and win puts them only 2 points behind them.

Some really good crowds on the weekend.

But the future of the A-League is likely to be dependent on broadcast revenue. We don’t have ratings for the saturday game, haven’t seen any in yonks, but we do know this much.
TV share for Saturday evening:
7Mate 4.4%
10Peach 3.3%
9Go 2.6%
9Gem 2.3%
ABC Kids 2.1%
7Flix 2.1%
SBS World Movies 2.0%
10Bold 1.5%

Yes, more people decided to watch a movie on one of SBS’s secondary channels than watch the A-League (I don’t know what it was).

I estimate that that last number would translate to something like a 40k average rating across the whole broadcast.

Actually, it’s not the very worst number I have seen for the A-League, but still….

The A-League is set for a thrilling climax, but will fans turn up for the finals?

Just noticed that Stuart has opted for a Glory away win against SFC, very brave of the current leader..
It’s an important game, Perth can actually replace SFC in the top 6 with a win, which is a bit surprising.

The Roar's A-League tips and predictions Round 24

Simon Hill has written an article on the SEN website.
He makes the point that compared to when the A-League was first established, there is hardly any media today covering the Australian game.
Now many will put that down to the Australian media being biased towards the game, and there might be a tiny bit of truth in that.
However, consider what existed for around the first decade of the A-League’s existence:
– SBS had long covered football, almost exclusively of any other sport
– The Age, for a period, were one of the Victory’s major sponsors (which is highly unusual for a daily)
– Fox used to run two mid-week chat shows
– 442, both the magazine and the online edition, dedicated much space to the A-League
– Sen radio, anytime there was a Friday or Saturday night home Victory game, would have a dedicated football show which ran for hours

None of that exists any more. all of that has disappeared in the last six to nine years.

The A-League is more invisible now than at any point in its 18 year history.

The A-League’s inability to make forward progress a result of all parties

If you look carefully at my post, you will see I am underlining the folly of geographic based conferences.

NRL is expanding so conferences and divisions must be brought in - but only if they're done right

Apart from a handful of seasons when the best club stood out quite clearly, for the most part, the A-League has always been quite unpredictable.

Who can forget the season when Adelaide was rock bottom at the mid point of the season, came roaring back to do the double.

Of course in the first couple of seasons, the original NZ team were terrible, but even they were able to win an away game against SFC! (te he he)

Do we want the crap-shoot A-League season we have, or something more predictable?

It’s been a while since we’ve had an article on the Roar lamenting football’s failure to realise its great potential.

But to be clear – this lamentation only really applies to the professional game, grassroots football is the healthiest it has ever been.

A big part of the expectation gap can be explained by the folly in assuming that massive participation rates should mean a massive professional game – but there is no linkage between the two, it has never been there, and it’s unlikely to ever be there (in fact, in modern Australia, it is less likely than ever).

As another poster mentioned, the A-League is invisible. It really is incredible that despite having two games on FTA per round, the A-League is more invisible than it has ever been in its entire history.

Two seasons in, we can conclude that the move from Fox Sports to a completely new streaming service has been an unmitigated disaster.

Sitting here today, looking back – why on Earth would anyone want to advocate moving away from a dedicated sports channel with 24/7 sports news??

But the souring with Fox was longer in the making – and goes back directly to Fox losing the Premier League to Optus. Back in the day, on a Saturday night, you’d have an hour gap or so between the end of the A-League coverage and the start of the Premier League coverage – it was heaven for all football fans (and even just general sports enthusiasts).

That has been gone for years now, and the A-League’s steady decline over an 8 or 9 year period can be traced back directly to that one single event. There’s a chance that the synergy might be got back in the future if Optus ever shows interest in the A-League (but it showed zero interest last time round).

Incredibly, Optus’ main offering is the Premier League, and it has a million subscribers.

The modern day truth is that the average Australian is more interested in paying for the Premier League than paying for the A-League (the latter being at an absolute bargain basement price).

And that’s the one key indicator that confirms what we all know deep, deep down inside – there is no coming back for the A-League. What we have now is pretty much as good as it’s going to be.

The A-League’s inability to make forward progress a result of all parties

If we are to have a conference system, the ideal split is as follows:

Southern Conference:
Melbourne
Canberra

Far Eastern Conference:
Warriors

Northern Conference:
Queensland teams

South-Eastern Conference
NSW teams

NRL is expanding so conferences and divisions must be brought in - but only if they're done right
