A life long NZ rugby tragic

Very honest observations. I like it. Can’t quibble with many of them Coker. I missed the Highlanders game but those selections were always risky. Same with the Crusaders. Blues are all over the place as you point out with Sotutu and Akira once again only doing enough in fits and starts as per earlier seasons. If only someone could get into their heads and convince them of their considerable physical advantages and get them to utilise those advantages for 80 minutes they would be world beaters. McKenzie once again we have to be patient with to a degree if only because there is no one else coming through that is performing. Barrett will plug the gap temporarily when he returns but what sort of form will he be in?

You are right. That would be a great stat. I am trying to get a read on Sotutu’s and Akira’s work rates. They seemed to be walking for long parts of the tahs game. Very little urgency and intensity. Stats on effective ruck cleans or defended rucks would help. Our All Black 6 worries me again now that Frizzell has moved on and poor old Blackadder is crocked again.

Speaking of governance issues the response from the Provincial Unions in NZ to the scathing report last August on NZ Rugby current governance model not being ‘fit for purpose’ has been agreed by that group but of course mot for public viewing. The original report wants them all to give up their voting and veto power in favour of 2 completely new independent boards. The unions are pushing back on this much to the displeasure of the Rugby Players Association who want all the original proposals adopted unchanged. Could get messy very soon.

I go to ESPN rugby. Then click on scores, find the game then go from there. Love those stats!

My first instinct was that the producers made the right decision to not replay what was a visually sickening sight of Leinert-Brown being knocked out. Probably more to do with my personal bias against ambulance chasers who gain their thrills through these video incidents. On the other hand with so many children watching the game then replays would provide an opportunity for an explanation of the incident and consequences to the child in light of any questions. A tough one to adjudicate on. I was so pleased though to see him recover and front the crowd. Hope he makes a 100% recovery.

Also great to see the Reds returning to that tough resourceful outfit they were back in the eighties, nineties and early 2000’s which were hard nosed and always hard to beat. Hope it continues.

The Wrap: The two massive power shifts shaping Australian and New Zealand rugby

Great games over the weekend with many close finishes which kept the blood pressure high! A brave new world from a NZ Rugby perspective at the moment with many players putting their hands up. Our locking stocks as always worry me with no one standing out. Sounds like Josh Lord is not too far away but apart from him not sure who else is on the horizon or a possible bolter. Looking at that England pack against Ireland they will take some shifting to keep our ruck ball fast.

The result in Lautoka had the look of inevitability about it from early on. The lack of cohesiveness between forwards and backs was awful. I felt for Kemara there and wondered as to Havili’s role in guiding him. The continuously misfiring lineout looks like an Achilles heel going forward into the season. We will see I suppose. Whilst I am a Hurricanes and Chiefs man coming from the Naki it is sad to see a currently lost Crusaders outfit. There is still a lot of experience in that forward pack and injuried players to return to bolster the cause but the next 3 weeks could define their season. Surely they will make the playoffs. Then who knows?

Scott Robertson did but can Penney turn the Crusaders' trainwreck season around?

Bit early to write them off this year. They need to start nailing their lineouts though. A horror show. Mounga is a huge loss. There are a few teams back in NZ licking their lips at the moment though. Blood in the water.

'We just didn’t execute': Crusaders slump to 28-year low after second straight loss to Drua in Fiji

Their team are peerless at the moment. With a devastating combination of physical and athletic forwards with very fast and gifted backs. Generational players I’m my opinion. We seem to have no real depth in our forwards with no-one coming through at the a moment apart from Leroy Carter who is more a hybrid player. Plus poor defending by our newer backs. Bringing back our thirtysomethings tells you something. I have question marks over Cama’s credentials. But a lack of depth is not on him this early in his stint.

Thanks for the article Geoff. Brings back lots of memories and emotions. I remember being at the Springbok vs Wairarapa Bush game in 1965 as a 9 year old. The Halt All Racial Tours debate in early 1970’s. I was overseas for 1981 but my wife describes the shocking scenes in New Plymouth for the game. A friend of mine was at the protest with a motorcycle helmet on and his young son in tow. Crazy man. That conflicted 1995 final where it was so obvious how the South African nation and Nelson Mandela had won the trophy and I felt privileged to witness such an event. That Bokke side tackled anything that moved that day. I still tip my cap to them for that win. Time now for us to win one back! All the best to both teams.

👍 👍 👍 Well said bro!!!!! Champion post.

Probably places to the appointment of Razor early to prevent him going overseas in perspective as it now looks more political to appease the fans and the assumption Fozzie would continue to fail. If they had stuck to their historical process and allowed Razor to choose his own path and wait until post World Cup to appoint a new coaching group then NZR would have retained some credibility as a governing body. Backing but not backing Fozzie looks petty and premature. Undermined him based on fan pressure and NZ rugby in house politics.

Waiting for the All Blacks to crumble: Final yardstick of NZ fans' treatment of Ian Foster

Is it possible? Fozzie to get the gong? Would be so pleased for him to get the recognition. He and the team have reinvented themselves this year and especially throughout the tournament. I top my hat to him for learning and adapting. Great human redemption traits. Surrounding yourself with class assistants no matter the circumstances and building a team.

Ardie for me but of course I am biased. He is such a special player and a difference maker for our team. Hope he goes well on Sunday and nails it. Pleased for Eben as well. Very deserving for many years both Eben and Ardie.

I’m with you Decoy. Cannot wait. I think Nepo is a good choice given Nche’s ability. We will see. Biggest test between us since 1995 heartbreak. Both teams will be pumped for this.

COMPLETE RWC finals teams: All Blacks' answer to Boks' bold 7-1 bench call, Smith returns for England

Yes I agree. It’s a shame that the Bokke don’t rely more on a combination of their brilliant forwards and dynamic and play game plans to suit. When they play ball in hand rugby they are so good at it. Once again it is a deliberate choice to play the more forward orientated game plan. Good on them it’s just a shame that they don’t try to be more adventurous.

SPIRO ZAVOS: England's bully boy, no rugby display against Boks is the game they play in hell. Now for the salvation

Surely the England game style is a deliberate choice by their management. There must be players in England capable of playing a more expansive game. They are just not selected. Whilst some of their fans are gushing over that performance and not complaining nothing will change.

Same here. The supporters you refer to with regard to not being allowed to lose or being the only nation entitled to back to back cups are certainly not representative of the majority. Most supporters are grateful for wins and wish all opponents well in their endeavours. The noisy minority are an embarrassment to the rest of us and the deafening silence currently is a pleasure.

Thanks Harry. Great prose. An amazing character that Rassie. Coming from such hardship and growing from it using the gifts he used to survive his childhood no doubt. Much respect to him as a survivor. Kia kaha. As you indicate the team and country are behind him and are getting the benefits of his genius. I wish him and the Springboks well for this weekend.

'Wild honesty and deep anger' vs the 'good company man': Coaching box culture clash at heart of World Cup final

Thanks for some background on Mark. A super gifted athlete and a fine young man coming from such tragedy and growing and learning from it. Sounds like his parents are right behind him which is a huge thing for any young man’s mental stability. Hope he goes well and brings those tears of joy to his parents and family.

Sibling's tragic killing that caused his mum a heart attack: the harrowing back story of All Blacks ace

You are so right about the All. Lacks not being allowed to lose. Just riles up a lot of so called fans who with social media can create a lot of noise. Similar to 1999 when France beat us in that SF. I thought we had grown from there but a certain group of fans cut the tam no slack. As it’s turned out losing to Ireland at home has galvanised the team to improve over the past year. Suddenly the whole country is behind the team finally as they have rebuilt and learnt from their mistakes. I am so proud of the team and Fozzie with what they have achieved to date. Win or lose on the weekend. They have silenced the vitriol from a certain group of fans which is some achievement. Stuff was a hotbed for nasty comments for the past several years. Now thankfully silent.

One thing I will be interested in is who are selected as our bench props for Sunday. Massive challenge for our youngsters against de Kock and Nche. Glad I am not a selector. Must be tempting to go with the old firm of Nepo and Ofa to make sure our scrum holds up in the second half. Even with their defensive deficiencies and ability to give away penalties.

Fair point. Brodie is in good form. I like the body language and the looks of steely focus from our players. Not getting too far ahead of themselves. I can’t remember the last time I observed such determination from the team and management. I just hope it pays off on Sunday morning.

I certainly hope so. We finally have a 6!
