The (real, glaringly obvious) issue with this RWC campaign is the omission of several key players for reasons unknown (and obscure) to anybody but the coaching staff and selectors. To discard players like Michael Hooper, Pete Samu, Quade Cooper, etc. was NEVER going to go well. These players carried the team for the last few seasons, and should have been automatic inclusions in the team.
As it turned out is is in those specific areas that the Wallabies came up totally short: the inability to compete effective at the breakdown (Hooper), the lack of high impact substitutions (Samu), and the inability to kick well out of hand or control the game (Cooper).
I could not believe when I saw they were omitted, and frankly am not surprised by the amateur hour we witnessed in France.
The people responsible for this type of mismanagement MUST GO. Whether that be Eddie (perhaps past his glory days by some years), the Rugby Australia CEO, the entire selection panel, I don’t know. But this must stop. The BEST players in the country DESERVE to be selected. Full stop.
If they fail, so be it. I can live with that. When our best can’t win but gave it their best shot, I accept that. But to see this shambles due to poor selections, and poor coaching methodology & mentality. That I can’t live with.

WALLABIES REPORT CARD: 'F--k mate, what didn't go wrong?'- Few pass marks and an F for Eddie in Pool C disaster

As a new-ish supporter of the Wallabies, who knows little of the backroom issues affecting the state of rugby affecting the Wallabies, I do have to point out on glaring issue with the current group of players, who I believe are (in general) on par with most other teams in terms of fitness, size, quality, etc.
Our players DO NOT KNOW or respect the LAWS/RULES of the game. It is frustrating and disheartening to see, game after game, how often the Wallabies transgress and get penalised. Frequently for blatant stupid things (like Richie Arnold TWICE in one game getting penalised for playing the half-back without the ball). In the last five years of games involving the Wallabies (i.e. under numerous different coaching teams), I can count on one hand the number of games where we have a full 15 on the park the entire game. The Wallabies like to pride themselves on how they play “smart and innovative” style of rugby (according to the likes of Campese, Horan, Rogers, etc.), yet it has been some time since I have witnessed any of that. Instead it is channel one bludgeoning where the lack of knowledge of the rules are frequently exposed.
So, before we fire the entire coaching staff, all Rugby Australia employees, etc. I believe it will be of immense value to EDUCATE the current rugby players of the rules, so they can stop being their own worst enemy.
I am SAfr. by birth, and the boks used to have the same problem, yet look how they have evolved and changed, to now having very few penalties, and almost no cards, against them in previous games. So it is not impossible to educate and improve players. If they can, anyone can.

Lastly, I also think any team should be selected by a panel, not just one man. Leaving players like Samu, Cooper, Hooper, Iketau, and others behind has been an unmitigated disaster. Gordon, McDermot, Donno, etc. were terribly exposed as the inexperienced players not ready for the big leagues they are. Having selectors question the omission of the list I mentioned above, may have exposed the insanity of the plan before it blew up in our faces.

The Wrap: With Wallabies done and dusted in 15 miserable days, who do we trust to take Australian rugby forward?

I expect the NZ rugby talent production line will produce many alternatives to these over the next 4 years, especially in the backline

What will the Wallabies look like in 2020 - and at the next World Cup?

And I believe h should be given the opportunity, in the spirit of “embracing a culture of tolerance of diversity”, which is the RA mantra.

What will the Wallabies look like in 2020 - and at the next World Cup?

If I was in charge of RA, or the Wallabies coaching structure, and with the RWC four years away, I would like to have a four-year strategy to incrementally improve the Wallabies team by playing some higher ranked “tier 2 teams” and lower ranked “tier 1 teams”in year 1 (Fiji, Japan, Italy, Scotland, France), to start building some momentum, and more importantly belief in the players.
Then year 2 add in better teams (end of year tour Wales, Ireland, England).
See the RC and Bledisloe Cup as a proving ground, without smothering the players (and new coach) with unrealistic expectations.

What will the Wallabies look like in 2020 - and at the next World Cup?

I don’t necessarily agree with all all your choices, but I certainly agree that the talent is there for a very competitive squad with some depth.
I just hope that the new coach will focus on developing some new talent, instead of playing the same (unsuccessful) players week after week that MC did. Foley, Phipps, etc. were average for a very long time. I do not think White is the best, as he is slow, and very predictable (always takes two steps sideways before passing), and I hope Powell finally gets some game time and nurturing. The young Reds flyhalf also should be nurtured.
I wonder if the Wallabies structure should perhaps consider getting players to spend some time more competitive “developing” competitions, such as the NPC or the Currie Cup, as it clearly has the potential to develop them better than the short Super Whatever competition.
I would of course love to see an improved NRC or inter-state or even club game structure (similar to the NRL) be given some support.
Players really need to have the ability to hone/grow their skills at a level above club, but below Super or international level

Just wow! Speed, aggression, accuracy, urgency, desperation, and in spades. See what good coaches and good players can do together? So much for Ireland being the 2nd best team in the world. The gap is a chasm

No luck for the Irish: All Blacks into semis with 46-14 win

Sadly this was, oh so predictable.
The players (in Australia) certainly have the quality, but the current Rugby Australia, and Wallaby management and coaching personnel are a disgrace.
Gone are the smart running style, replaced by boring poorly executed one-dimentional dumb running, crazy passes, lack of vision by players, poor captaining decisions, etc.
Players being played out of position (JoC, Hodges, etc.), form players not in starting 15 (Toomua, etc.), better players not even in squad (Speight, Samu, Cooper), it’s just such a cacophony of errors.
Please, let us hope some sanity is restored, the “Castle” is cleared out, and a coach with some pedigree is selected, based on merit, and merit, and merit, and track record, and…
Please, just please

England eliminate Wallabies in World Cup quarter-final

Wow. Just wow.
So blocked giving Campese a go (can he truly be worse than the recent bloke??), gives the job to yet another Kiwi (has Australia got no coaches of it’s own??), then chucks off.
I think the board should rescind his coaching appointment (before the ink is dry), and get an AUSTRALIAN in the job. Geez louise

Waratahs boss Hore resigns, joins Blues

I’d like to see him try Kuridrani on the wing. He does not know how to pass anyway, is solid on defence and under the high ball. Keep JP as a finisher for now.
And swap JoC and Kerevi. Makes no sense to play them like they are at present. JoC is a playmaker with (some) vision, Kerevi is just another battering ram (with limited passing desire)

Hooper to the bench, To'omua at flyhalf among ten Wallabies changes for Georgia clash

I honestly don’t understand this kind of article. JP is very inexperienced, and has not faced any major team, nor has he been tested by a quality kicking team. Easing him in for the future would be the best way to go. At present AAC has been the best solid presence on winger. The oversight to leave Henry Speight at home is the real problem here.
And I don’t see how Kuridrani and Kerevi can be picked together. Both suffer from extreme bouts of selfishness and white line fever. Kuridrani cost the Wallabies two tries by refusing to pass to open players on his side, instead trying his usual bulldozing technique to add another to his own record. Selfish player. I would pick him on wing, where I feel his best position is.
And Kerevi should be 13, as he is not much better. Also rarely passes.
JoC is the natural 12, which happens to be his club position, and he has much better vision and overall skill than Kerevi. Pick players in their correct spot for once Cheika!
I think MT is the better 10 at present, and really gets the backline moving best. Waiting till the Wallabies are behind (again) against a quality opposition would not be my personal choice.
And both scrumhalves are equally slow behind the breakdown and set pieces. White takes 2 steps to the side EVERY time, while Genia double steps before passing. So, they are both slow.
My backline (only of course in my own fantasy universe as MC has little sense) would be:
9. Genia/White
10. Toomua
12. JoC
13. Kerevi
14. Kuridrani
11. Koriobete
15. DHP
“Finishers:
Genia/White
Beale
AAC

Use Jordan Petaia to re-boot the Wallabies' World Cup challenge

The Wallabies have some gaping holes in the current selection.
Leaving a winger like Speight, who had a decent season (in attack and defence), out of the squad is plain stupid – constantly trying to fill the holes with “willing but average” players (Hodge, DHP, Maddocks) are going to be an ongoing issue – just look how they were caught out by the ABs last week.
So, I would certainly ditch DHP ( no BMT), and not select AAC (who offers no impact), but get Speight into the team.
I also think Kurundrani might be an option for winger (fast, defends well, doesn’t know how to pass…).

But I guess the real problem starts up front. Loose forwards are slow, and not competing. Hooper is really my best pick for 12 in the team, that’s where he seems to want to be. Samu needs to be given a chance, where is Dempsey?

I’m going to stop now, I’m getting depressed. Cheika will select the same underperformers he dose, and it’s going to be painful to watch.

“Is it too late to say I’m sorry…” ala Justin Bieber might be a song for Raelene Castle to sing to you know who, who was noticeably missing last weekend

VOTE: Pick your Wallabies squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup

I can see nothing but a thrashing coming the way of the Wallabies this weekend. Cheika just does not learn, or listen to anybody else it seems. For weeks it has been reported that JoC has “found his best position, etc.”at 12, so of course MC will pick him him at 13. He truly is an dolt of a coach. Expect pain, this weekend and in Japan.
Salta can go 50-50. The Boks don’t travel well, as history will attest. And they struggle to get psyched for the Pumas, so hard to predict.

The Rugby Championship Week 3: Someone clone the trophy

Cheika is turning into quite the whinger. Let’s not forget the Springboks were also a man down for 10 minutes. Their response was to score a try. And this was SA-B side. Tough times ahead
