Christians have for a long time dictated what was acceptable so if you want quid pro quo maybe look at this as a bit of evening things up. I don’t feel it’s necessary to square things up for the past, the past is the past after all…. ancient history. As far as the present is concerned, as many many people have already pointed out, everyone is free to quote whatever they want from the bible BUT if you have been warned by your employer and had a clause in your contract relating to that warning then you can reasonably expect consequences for quoting parts or ideas which don’t line up with a tolerant societies values. Before anyone says thats intolerant of his views, i’ll point out that being tolerant shouldn’t require you to be tolerant of intolerance

If you want to ride the train you have to pay the fare…. No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride. HST

interesting example jack. i guess most people would be pretty grateful if you warned them of an obvious tangible danger like a train. if though you said “WATCH OUT TRAIN!” and they said “uh…. what train?” and you said, “that one there” and they said “i don’t see any trains” and you said “trust me man it’s there, here’s a book all about it” some people might give the train they can’t see a wide berth, others just might be a bit annoyed.

the choice depends on whether you’re defending a lead or trying to chase it down. i guess the answer depends on where you’d most likely to find yourself.

Super Rugby Team of the Week: Round 10

Yes those scientists and philosophers were religious. As Lawrence Krauss has said, of course they were, it was the only game in town. The church founded those universities so it’s no surprise that that’s where the most highly educated people came from. The thing about science is it’s evidence based which is why it’s moved on. There are some good ideas in religion and maybe not so good ideas. Maybe it’s time for a review, in fact several have been made. Here’s one for the 10 commandments
I: Do not condemn people on the basis of their ethnicity or color.
II: Do not ever use people as private property.
III: Despise those who use violence or the threat of it in sexual relations.
IV: Hide your face and weep if you dare to harm a child.
V: Do not condemn people for their inborn nature.
VI: Be aware that you too are an animal and dependent on the web of nature, and think and act accordingly.
VII: Do not imagine that you can escape judgment if you rob people with a false prospectus rather than with a knife.
VIII: Turn off that f#$%^&*g cell phone.
IX: Denounce all jihadists and crusaders for what they are: psychopathic criminals with ugly delusions.
X: Be willing to renounce any god or any religion if any holy commandments should contradict any of the above.
The author Christopher Hitchens, (who I have mixed feelings about) did point out that he would retain the original 8th and 9th commandments, thou shalt not steal, and thou shalt not bear false witness.
I’m not saying these are perfect but at least a bit more relevant to our time

Israel Folau digs in for the fight of his professional life

They way I read it is cheika has said “as things stand” you couldn’t pick him. To me that could mean if things change you could pick him. What needs to change is unclear. Maybe folau just needs to say sorry that he expressed his beliefs in a way which caused offence. That wasn’t his intention and he’ll consider his words a bit more carefully next time. Seems easy enough. Is he willing to concede a little ground, are RA? If they do it seems reasonable that cheika could then say when he said “as things stand you couldn’t pick him” folau was refusing to budge, but if a compromise is reached things are no longer as they were….. seems unlikely. The whole thing is very open to interpretation and full of grey areas, much like the game we all enjoy.

Cheika stumbles in first test of new Wallabies paradigm

agree with that brett. we have very close conferences over all and only the crusaders look unbeatable… despite having been beaten. hot completion for WC squads. I think its been a pretty good season so far. enjoying it. go the canes! and the moondogs, not this week.

Super Rugby Round 10: The circle of craziness is complete

i guess with dmac out he has a shot but is still in competition with solomano, sorry spelling? and stevenson for the 15 jersey over the season. seems a pretty solid option from what i’ve seen.

Super Rugby Round 10 teams: Maddocks returns for Rebels

Mr who, in normal circumstances I would assume that maybe you missed the fact that I was making a silly reference to limphoma’s comment above where here referred queens council simply as QC. However due to your constant, often very subtle sarcasm in other comments I I just don’t know what to think anymore.

Saying men will always let me down is just not true, at least so far in my life. Yes some men and women have let me down, but most have been pretty good. What did Jesus do with this whip he made? I’m going to guess that while he was making it he considered his actions, cause making a whip takes time, then didn’t use it cause whips are mean. That’s a real shame cause I reckon those money changers and lenders needed a damn good whipping.

Words are added to and removed from the dictionary all the time. Language evolves. English didn’t even start until the 5th century AD and has been constantly changing ever since. If you’d rather go back to the days of the Anglo saxons who crossed the English channel bringing their epic poetry and laying down the basis for the language we now speak, you’re more than welcome. Or perhaps you’d rather go back further to the days of the beaker folk who traveled the seas bringing their vessels designed for carrying liquid, teaching us to drink out of cups. WHATS WRONG WITH SCOOPING UP WATER AND DRINKING IT FROM YOUR CUPPED HANDS!!!

How are you bringing QC into to this? And when did he get engaged????

He came on TV and said that god had spoken to him, so I stopped channel surfing immediately. He said that god had told him to raise 5 million dollars. God was broke.

Just a very minor point and probably splitting hairs here, but I’d say it’s really the lack of evidence which makes me not believe

I guess its something which is very difficult to know definitively whether someone chooses to be gay or not because it’s based on feelings rather than something we can measure. I’d suggest that the best way that we currently have of knowing is to ask the people who are gay, if anyone knows it’d be them. I didn’t choose to be hetro, it just kind of happened. I do think if given a choice I would choose heterosexuality not because I think the alternative is wrong in anyway, but because in our current world it’s way easier to be straight. I have a good friend who didn’t come out until his late 20s and though I’m sure he would have been accepted in our group of friends he didn’t feel comfortable about doing so for a long time. Especially in our late teens and early 20s there was certainly a bit of joking around about the subject. It wasn’t hateful but thoughtless. I feel really bad that I contributed to him feeling uncomfortable about being who he is. I find it very hard to believe that he chose his preference to men. He was from a small town where often that type of thing doesn’t go down well. I think if you were to really try to imagine what it might be like to be in his shoes as a young man you’d realize it’s probably not a choice.

Yup. I am drawn to comments sections despite knowing that they tend to leave me at best frustrated and annoyed. The Roar is probably a high water mark as far as this goes which is why I’m glad the discussion base has broadened beyond rugby, if only for a short time.
Social media does seem to amplify the voices of a few who tend to feel strongly about things (and those who like cute videos of cats) it does also potentially allow those people to hear different points of view that they might not otherwise be exposed to. It seems that currently there are a few prominent atheists who, along with often explaining their points in a fairly clear way, seem to get frustrated and end up calling people idiots. I can sort of understand but don’t think it helps their argument but rather makes people discount them without considering what they’ve said

I understand you feeling that it’s all getting a bit much, and you’re right. However I have found this whole debacle and the debate around it very interesting. Though I read the roar almost daily I’m not usually bothered to put in my 2 cents. In this instance I did (probably without a great deal of finesse but I don’t think I’m alone there). I enjoy these types of debate and though it’s a rugby site I think these types of discussions are worth while having. While this has all been unfolding I listened to a podcast with a guy who works at CERN, Brian cox I think. He said he used to argue endlessly with people who thought differently about the way the world is, but never seemed to get anywhere. As he’s gotten older he said he started looking for common ground and starting from there. He found that people are a lot more open to your ideas when they don’t feel they’re being attacked. It’s made me think about how I would best engage people on a topic I feel strongly about. If nothing else izzy has hopefully made us think.

As the rebs are my favorite aus team I will really be hoping that they can get up for the tahs….. but have a feeling the tahs will be really up for this game somehow and if Beale is playing 15 instead of 12 then that really helps their chances. Some great match ups in there. Game of the week?

The next three weeks could decide the Australian conference

3rd 10??? Its a tricky one. Crusaders guy, is it Cameron?? Was picked last year against Japan, haven’t seen much of him though. Then you’ve got black, ioane, m Mackenzie banks. None are up to standard from what I’ve seen. TJ played 20mins at 1st5 earlier this season….. it was dire

The Wrap: Winx shows Israel Folau how to bow out of the big time

the crusaders are humming and as sad as it is to say as a canes and BBBBB supporter….. RM is starting to look really good after a bit of a slow start to the season. How they avoided a yellow card or 2 is a bit crazy though. I know they got one in the end but at 81mins or something…. possibly some home ground advantage there. Congrats on the Jags performance, they really need to back it up now and buck the trend of the rollercoaster that is the SA conference
