How much of the NRL’s revenue comes from poker machines and the online gambling companies?

10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares

That’s a good point too, but, it is what it is, and from the sounds of it, if the Vic Government weren’t throwing $$ in then the Rebels would be in an even worse position.

'Want to show rugby isn't dead in Melbourne': Rebels skipper's fighting words as Eddie calls for 'hard decisions'

Wow, I’m gobsmacked – yet they pull in full crowds at all the games 😱

Rugby News: Quade thinks Wallabies days are over, tug-of-war looms in Aussie rugby over talent, Boks snap up gun Kiwi coach

It’d be nice to see full crowds at all the SR games, not just the rebels. Point taken though, the crowds there seem to be pretty abysmal, especially during the Super Round when you would think all the games there should be sold out. Maybe the Kiwi ex-pats living in Melbourne can do the comp a favour and adopt the Rebels as their 2nd team and sign up for a season membership.

How the west was lost again: Rugby's battler club suffers another blow and this one could be fatal

I certainly agree with you for the afternoon kick-offs. As far as I recall the Wallabies test matches (at least the ones played during the Australian winter) have always been broadcast on free to air TV. I don’t think a handful of Wallbies test matches a year are enough to fully engage young (and new) fans. I agree with Andrew Blades – having super rugby behind the paywall for so long did rugby a disservice in Australia as far as building interest from young fans and people not previously exposed to the sport.

Bringing rugby back to the fans: The game should be easier to access and more people-friendly

Hi BF, I think NSW has a GPS comp as well, so there’s another 57 lads looking for a gig.

'Took me three years to find one': Prized recruit hits ground running as Tahs boss cools Wallaby hype

And there’s the crux of Australian rugby’s woes – his skill levels were so far behind the Kiwi’s in Year 11. If this doesn’t further highlight that we should be pumping more resources into coaching at ALL levels rather than chasing NRL players, we are going to continue to struggle.

I get the bit about duplication of staff, but realistically, if you did centralise the operations, how many staff/how many dollars would you expect to save? And why do they need to own ovals/stadiums to do that?

Humility cuts both ways: Brett Clark and the QRU deserve the same scrutiny as Hamish McLennan

The argument could also be made that Rugby Australia only exists because of the funding from World Rugby. This state v state and school vs school stuff is absolute rubbish and I’m pretty sure that Herbert, Waugh, Roff and the others on the board are adult enough to not entertain any of it and focus on trying to fix the real root cause of the situation we find ourselves in – improving the on-field performance of our players. Yes centralisation of coaching, strength & conditioning etc will hopefully lead to a better standard of players, but if we think we can borrow our way out of the mess by pooling assets, then I’m sorry – that’s a path fraught with danger and I think the current owners of those assets are right to be protective of them, irrespective of how they came to own them in the first place. NRL and AFL have a big jump on rugby in Australia, and realistically, we are never going to catch them. That can’t be the over-arching goal of Rugby Australia. Their main goal should be improving the performance of the players we produce, and doing so in a fiscally responsible manner. I don’t see how changing the ownership of ovals and stadiums will suddenly raise the skill levels of our players. Trying to outspend the NRL by paying over the top for talent is a race to insolvency.

Duncan McRae as an assistant for O’Gara? 😛

The only way is up, baby - What the next Wallabies coaching setup should look like

I’d be interested to see how Harry Wilson would progress being coached by Razor Robertson who got all frothy after he carved up the Crusaders in 2020. It’s not going to happen, but if only that potential could be elevated. He had a great game against the Wild Knights the other day.

Comeback kids: 10 players who can explode back into the Wallabies reckoning in 2024

Paul I was going to post the exact same thing after watching how we bombed out after Tupou did his hammy in the WC. I’d much rather see the monkeys in charge of the zoo paying more peanuts to the Silverbacks in the front row than the glory boys in the back three. Australia doesn’t really have a problem in developing talented outside backs, so it’s stupid to be paying them big bucks. I would have thought that South Africa’s success has highlighted how valuable having depth in BIG, strong, front rowers (make that tight 5 actually) is, and we would get better value for money IMHO by putting more focus on those guys. Their body types aren’t suited to NRL, AFL or basketball either, so we aren’t competing with everyone else, but we need to incentivise the big fellas to try to make a career out of rugby.

If only those who make the decisions took off their blinkers a little and realised that there are plenty of great athletes produced from the regional centres. Did anyone take any notice of the postcodes the QLD State of Origin players had on their jerseys this year and last? Daly Cherry-Evans (4740 Mackay), Reuben Cotter (4737 Sarina), Tom Dearden (4740 Mackay), Cameron Munster (4740 Rockhampton), Harry Grant (4703 Yeppoon), Ben Hunt (4702 Dingo), Selwyn Cobbo (4605 Cherbourg), Valentine Holmes (4810 Townsville), Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow (4870 Cairns), Thomas Flegler (4854 Tully), Tino Fa’asuamaleaui (4570 Gympie).

If we can’t even get the games on free to air TV for the kids and their parents to watch in the first place, of course they’re going to grow up hero worshipping the NRL (or AFL) players. If we are talking elitism, having your product behind a paywall smacks of that from the get-go. Then, as Nick L highlights, it’s a struggle to get a junior comp going in the regional centres, which, as the above list highlights, produces PLENTY of talent that grows up there. The code here in Australia has SO much work to do just to survive, let alone again become competitive in the world – which makes me really sad, because I do love the game.

I’m a proud regional Queenslander and Australian. The Wallabies are my first team and (at present in the current setup) the QLD Reds are my second team. The results from the last 20 years indicates that no-one in Australian rugby has a recipe for success. If we are going to have a proper review, it needs to be done by someone from totally outside the current nepotism and cronyism. I don’t know who – maybe Raelene Castle was the right person?? But, as a country, we all need to get behind it and give it time to grow, otherwise we are headed further down the slippery slope we are already on.

We are lucky to get many more than 15k spectators to a Lang Park game anyway so we may as well use Ballymore – no rent to pay to LP, better atmosphere, hell, the burgers and chips might be cheaper too. It shouldn’t cost the punters $100+ each just to go watch the footy.
