Except the intended GABBA rebuild (sensibly halted) and all the other cost over runs for a once touted cost neutral games, that then became $4b, that then mysteriously became $6b which mysteriously started being called $7.5b, which will then without a doubt be $15b in today’s money when the dust has settled. And what, for 2 weeks of sport?

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

What big events does Dunedin get? Did Taylor Swift play there? Rugby games? It always got that.

I worked out that each seat per event will be subsidised by $82 and that assumed a high level of patronage Expect a tariff, either paid on the roads or at the airport, on hire cars, perhaps on your electricity bill. There is no way this shortfall will come from general revenue or private funds. The only way the stadium will receive any private funds is through prostituting a massive 30m high red KFC sign etc above the stadium. Create a great view from Salamanca If you shake hands with the Devil, you’ll get a sore wrist.

Except with the roof it probably won’t be compliant for cricket. It may also be hard to alter for a rectangular field for rugby or soccer. These alterations could occur but will cost a lot more than $750m. $10 buys two coffees, less than 1qtr of a Swan’s game, and maybe a hot dog. Not exactly a king’s ransom. Multiple that by 160k and you will have the wages of a few staff for one year. Additionally little of that $10 is profit. You are maybe looking at one wage for one year.

The best comparison with this stadium isn’t the Perth and Adelaide stadiums, it is the Sydney desal plant. Every quarter the water bill of every Sydney resident has $30 added to it for maintenance of an inactive desal plant. During the very rare quarters it is active but still not required that becomes $40. This white elephant desal plants is run at enormous profit by Macquarie Bank. It was never required as Sydney has the largest water storage per capita of any major city and was predicted by almost every climatologist and the IPCC to become wetter due to global warming. In the last 4 years we have had our wettest (2.5m) and 3rd wettest year on record. Our dams are overflowing and more public money will be spent on raising them and flooding huge areas of national park making the desal plant even more useless. Did I also mention the massive amount of electricity this white elephant consumes in maintenance mode?
It also contained huge construction cost over runs. And guess where the politicians and public servants got jobs at? Mmm.
White elephant. Not required. Cost over runs. Not properly funded. Costly to maintain. Underutilized. Will be paid for by non-users in tolls and tariffs. Sound familiar?

Ever since 1958 Collingwood come across as a single premiership team. One that feels like they have defied the odds and the curse and it was oh so exhausting and they can go back to sleep for a decade or so. They don’t possess the greed of Hawthorn or West Coast. Let the giant return to sleep.

Stuff the excuses - Collingwood are making the same mistakes as always after success, and it's time to act

That Lever is available doesn’t surprise me, but as a Port supporter it would be nice to not have Lever or May playing. I really can’t see May playing against Adelaide on Thursday week as both the cracked ribs and veterbrae benefit from reducing movement. The pain will probably be somewhat manageable by Thursday week but his capacity to train will be diminished. The cracked ribs I’ve had, the first one I couldn’t remove my tshirt and noticed straight away, the 2nd time was when I went for a jog the next day after a knock. It is often not being able to breath properly that is the first indicator, can’t see how he will be able to lift his arms and also suck in enough oxygen.

This is the first real test of the new tribunal guidelines. A major Victorian club and a concussion. Will the SPP Benchmark be applied?

Now for a new Collingwood food documentary, Going Down in the Elevator. The magpie geese pie with puff pastry is in the oven and well and truly cooked. I reckon Charlie and Ginnivan are going to take it out and serve it cold!

Looking forward to the inexplicable umpiring calls favouring Collingwood and to the fact they never get replayed or called out by the commentators.

Yeah! And take her shoes off in the process and hand her an apron.

'Dripping in inequality and stupidity': Footy is back... and so is AFL interference

Agree, but the requirements for players need to change as it’s not the 1980s anymore. SA would get flogged under the previous arrangements. A fairer set up would be the non-Victorian states can pick any player either born or ever registered as a junior in that state. SA should also acquire all the NT eligible players. NSW and QLD combined as the Allies. Tasmania and ACT combined as the Tassie Capitals. The Capitals can pick 2 remaining players not picked by any other team. Another option would be Vic Metro and Vic Country.

The 1987 SANFL GF – Maynard, Gibbs, McDermott, Kernahan vs the Jarman brothers. After North lost the previous 2 GFs to Glenelg they really wanted to win this one. Lots of suspensions.

Leigh Matthews is wrong - the AFL doesn't need a send-off rule, and introducing one would just make things messier

Or any player, such as the 2004 GF when Wakelin was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The retiring player will face little consequence from the tribunal.

Devils ready to raise hell: AFL's newest club goes back to the future with traditional jumper as stadium furore rages on

“In their first season, the Devils will play their home games at the existing Bellerive Oval in Hobart and York Park in Launceston. For each season after that, the Tasmanian government must pay the club $4.5 million if the stadium isn’t ready.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff and his state Liberal Party insist the new stadium will go ahead, although the government will tip in no more than $375 million. The federal government will contribute $240 million, although that includes a broader urban renewal project, the AFL $15 million with further funding from private investment.”

One things for certain, the new Tassie club are going to be rich at the expense of the Tasmanian tax payer.

And let’s not get started on the AFL’s made up crowd figures. 44k apparently at the MCG for the Melbourne/WB game. Look at the footage for the game and chuckle.

Yes, they had Football Park which they used, but they also had Adelaide Oval which previously hosted the GF and had 65k spectators in the 1970s. What’s the record at a Hobart GF? My key point being Adelaide used what they had which was adequate. The new stadium, if it gets built, simply won’t be finished by 2028, cf. Brisbane Olympics, which is now cutting back construction. I bet when they use Bellerive and Launceston they won’t be full for every game.

People keep using Adelaide and Perth as examples but they waited 20 and 30 years respectively before building new stadiums. And they also had 2nd teams by that stage. It seems like too much of an up front commitment for Tassie.
