In the third innings of the match which Australia have won, in Australia, Warner averages 53.1 with 1009 runs having scored five centuries and three fifties. Smith, in the same period, has scored 452 runs at 34.76 with four fifties.

All but one of these centuries came in an absolute clattering of the opposition, with a lead of 130+ runs coming into the third innings and overall winning margins of 150+ runs. Smith only has two centuries in winning matches in the third innings, both away from home. Pune in 2017 and Edgbaston in 2019.

Of course, Warner is an opener and so he has a better opportunity to score in the third innings of a match, but even his two Away centuries fitting this criteria came in similar circumstances. Centurion and Cape Town in 2014, coming in with a lead of 191 and 207 runs, respectively.

Test-mortem: Jury's out on ‘treacherous’ Optus as Perth’s best venue, Warner robbed, Marnus slump no big deal … yet

Yep. Absolutely bonkers to me that Bailey mocking Johnson’s mental health challenges hasn’t been a bigger talking point when it was far more “personal” than anything Johnson said or wrote. Smacks of hypocrisy and is just a weird scenario all around.

'Everyone's best interests': Mitch Johnson loses CA gig after personal attack on Warner

The most experienced Pakistani bowler was the one who took the least advantage of it.

Marnus defends 'treacherous' pitch despite copping nasty blow, Marsh gets attitude adjustment, Pakistan fined

First innings runs are the name of the game. Australia could have scored literally zero runs in their second innings and still won by a wide margin. Warner actually bucked his usual trend by scoring well first up and not just padding his stats by getting soft third innings runs.

I don’t know if I’d say “terrific”. There is certainly an element of continued selection because “Davey” is such good mates with everyone, yes. That’s often the way with Test cricket though. The anointed ones are given a lot of leeway, while other players are a single failure away from being dropped.

Khawaja banner banned, Morris to be put on ice again, Marnus scans revealed, Johnson won't be shushed by Warner ton

I think that, as good as Ashwin and Jadeja are, their stats have been massively inflated by the type of pitches that the BCCI has curated to ensure that they don’t suffer any home losses, and the success of other off spinners, including part timers (Root’s 5/8 anyone?) reflects this. I wonder whether they would be good enough to adapt to Australian conditions, even with a couple of full Shield seasons under their belt.

Nice, Garry! Lyon joins legends with 500th Test wicket as Aussies rout Pakistan for massive win

I can see him overtaking McGrath on the back of a couple of good tours but I doubt that he’ll reach Warne. That injury during The Ashes was a sign of things to come. Lyon is getting old and his body probably won’t let him continue playing for more than three years.

Lyon could overtake Warne: Cummins can see GOAT rivalling spin king's tally by playing 'another four or five years'

The average for all spinners across Trumble’s career was about 24, while for Lyon, it’s about 34, so they’re both the same distance from their contemporaries. Lyon maybe edges him out because of how hideous Australia has been to bowl in for every other spinner during that period.

Warner’s scoring rate would move him out of the ‘good’ category, if not for his poor Away record. An S/R of 70+ and a batting average of more than 40 has only been achieved by five players with more than 2,000 runs (Sehwag, Gilchrist, Richards, Warner and Pant). It’s very exclusive club.

Marsh is a more natural fit for #6 than Green, anyway. It may be that Green just needs to find some form again in Shield cricket and be ready to fill Smith’s boots at #4 in a couple of years.

There’s some green on the pitch, but it’s certainly not a “green top” especially after being baked in beautiful, sunny weather for two days. Pakistan batted patiently for a long time to adjust to the bounce and sideways movement on offer. Ul-Haq and Shafique average 39 and 50, respectively, and their average opening partnership together after 20 odd innings is about 51. There’s absolutely no shame in them scoring 74 runs before a wicket fell. Our bowlers were probably a tad too short, but also luckless insofar as something like 27 deliveries flew past the outside edge.

Other teams are allowed to actually perform well, you know.

From Bazball to Snoozeball: Aussies toil despite monster first-innings total as gritty Pakistan fight back with the bat

I wouldn’t even say “playing for a draw”, it’s just that after conceding nearly 500 runs, a team’s only realistic option is to try and grind out 600+ in response and hope that they can topple the other side, and then quickly chase down approx 100 runs.

different squad, innit

Can't beat an egg: No moral victories and barely any wins to speak of for England after Ashes Bazball hubris

Good at home but didn’t have the guts to stick it out away from their greentops.

‘No better way to silence them’: Warner fires back at critics with blistering ton as Aussies pile on misery to Pakistan

I’ve always disliked the use of nicknames by people outside the team. “Davey”, “Smudge”, “Tugger” etc.

‘No better way to silence them’: Warner fires back at critics with blistering ton as Aussies pile on misery to Pakistan

Flat track? Not necessarily, as the pitch was spicy enough an troubled the other batsmen once the bowlers got their lengths right.

Home track? Absolutely.

COMMENT: David Warner defied his critics - but he didn't prove them wrong

Well said, Tim.

COMMENT: David Warner defied his critics - but he didn't prove them wrong

Not only are Johnson’s comments completely sensible, but I’m sure they’re informed by his own experience in the Australian side. He came into a side that had seen several prominent retirements, and would quickly suffer the effects of a couple more. Twelve months either side of Johnson’s debut, the Australian side lost Damien Martyn, Justin Langer, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden. Two of those (Warne and Gilchrist) were irreplaceable, once-in-a-lifetime players and McGrath was a generational fast bowling talent who was just as important to the success of the side, but who everyone knew would eventually be replaced (by Pat Cummins about a decade later).

Johnson, in just his 18th Test, was the most experienced bowler in a bowling attack that had a combined experience of 23 Tests. Compare the side which won the Ashes in a 5-0 whitewash, and the one which set out for South Africa two years later, and only Clarke, Hussey and Ponting were a part of both playing XIs.

He knows what he’s talking about, here.

Johnson doubles down with pressure on ageing Aussie team to perform or perish: Time for ‘a period of dramatic change’

I certainly think that the previous efforts of all three have been held against them, but it’s ridiculous to think that anything could be made of Renshaw or Bancroft’s previous forays into international cricket. Renshaw was originally dropped from the side as a 21 year old, which should be the end of that discussion, and he was set up to fail earlier this year, being forced to play in the middle order on Indian pitches that were spinning square from the first ball.

Bancroft hasn’t played Test cricket for four years and has fixed technical issues that were limiting his performance at international level.

Harris has the most recent proper crack and things, and while he was unlucky to get dropped after top-scoring at Melbourne, he seemed to be the same old Marcus Harris that everyone was accustomed to – just an alright batsman and a passenger in the field. It was only fair that Head and Khawaja both squeezed him out of the side, as both have gone on to have fantastic runs of form.

Banging down the door? Renshaw makes selectors sit up and take notice in Warner race with classy century

Manuka Oval is always a bit rubbish, it was just more rubbish than usual.

Banging down the door? Renshaw makes selectors sit up and take notice in Warner race with classy century

Easy to be cool and calm when you know that you’re untouchable. He’s not actually in danger of being dropped, so any and all criticism is like water off a duck’s back.

'Wouldn't be summer without a headline': David Warner's classy response to Johnson sledge

Yeah Bancroft’s two seasons of 50+ average in Shield weren’t enough to convince the selectors that he should replace the guy averaging 28 over a three year period. Clearly his fault.

Banging down the door? Renshaw makes selectors sit up and take notice in Warner race with classy century

I know that the pitch was slow, but surely Renshaw could have gone after the bowlers after bringing up his 100. That was an excruciatingly boring day’s play.

Banging down the door? Renshaw makes selectors sit up and take notice in Warner race with classy century

We’ve put out a few rubbish pitches over the last few years, but never to cynically put ourselves at an advantage. Indeed, the greenest pitches have been served up to England and South Africa – the two teams that would benefit most from them. The worst of our pitches, imo, have been the placid pitches made to ensure that Tests reach a fifth day on the basis of gates, rights and advertising money.

'Not what you want to see for Test cricket': Aussie stars sound franchise alarm ahead of international summer

Pierson’s batting is better than “gritty”, to be fair. Impressed me big time in those Australia A games in Sri Lanka last year.
