A head coaches role is not coaching, it should be the same as a Premier League Manager – its about getting the best from the players and understanding them well enough to know what each individual player’s buttons are, and when to push the different buttons for a consistent 100% performance. It’s not about set piece or scrums or backline moves although the final decision on these lies with the head coach, and it’s certainly not about catching and passing.
My son’s coach this year in a colts comp is the epitome of a poor head coach and it shows in the results they have this year. He has flogged them with fitness for losing, has definitely lost the change room and has no idea about what buttons each of the individuals needs pushed to perform. So the head coach is all about people management – players, wider squad, assistants, high performance trainers, all the support staff around the team. If you cannot manage people, you cannot be a head coach and if your concern is the height of the front row in a scrum, then you should remain as scrum coach.

The Wrap: How to fix Australian rugby? It’s all about coaching the coaches

So the college system would mean that Sydney Uni and UQ would gain ALL the talent, play in the local club comp as they do now and ruin it. It’s bad enough as it is with UQ, who then have the gall to complain some clubs cannot support more than 2 colts teams. They then take Prem grade club players under the guise of “the Reds have advised it for the players benefit”. Can’t see that changing in Bne with Mick at the Reds after so many years at Uni. This is just more of vested interests at every level leading to destruction of the grass roots club scene. This applies even more so to the GPS school system who are solely concerned with winning at any cost hence the scholarships to league players in years 11 and 12 (and for some 13&14), dumping the rugby focussed lads that made up the 10As, 9As etc and losing them to rugby by this lack of interest in developing them.

How to strengthen Australia's Super Rugby teams

Either way, its a hand held tool.

Reds need someone to cut through the bulls--t: Cheika is the right choice at right time

All well and good to continue bitching and moaning about Thorn but there a greater part of the organisation behind him that could do with a review as well. Just not by another old boy who ends up with a nice gig out of the review. I am NOT convinced by the recruitment and retention strategies in place, irrespective of the players out and in for Reds compared to other franchises. The assistants could do with some scrutiny too. I just think the Reds organisation is the most amateur going around at the moment so focussing on Thorn is both unfair and incomplete. In saying that the buck stops blah blah blah and the author’s top 20 influential people seems to be a bit incongruous. Lastly, I don’t have an answer to the head coach question but I don’t feel Cheika is the right move for Queensland.

But Jimbo, all the expert half back whisperers here have clearly stated that Tate cannot pass or kick. And they are that expert and sure of themselves, they need no evidence. And as for being co-captain, he is clearly rubbish. the players all hate him, the coach hates him, he does nothing and like Thorn, has lost the dressing room. Who am I to argue with such experts in the field!!

Rugby News: Tate's non negotiable revealed in long-term deal, Larkham riled by treatment of 'confused' Noah

Exactly Numpt. Plenty of folk around the Roar that know exactly what is going on inside the Reds, sounds like better than the Reds organisation even!! Nella and the others must be in some WhatsApp group with these fellas, probably to get the gift of their wisdom in and around rugby, life and the universe. Plus, the the half back experts on here just seem so spot on with their in depth and well-evidenced analysis of Tate’s inability to pass and kick that I now firmly believe he should be sent back to at least 2nd grade if not 3rd.

Rugby News: Tate's non negotiable revealed in long-term deal, Larkham riled by treatment of 'confused' Noah

Makes sense. And the parochialism exists at all levels, from juniors through to Super. I do like the idea of a reset but not if it just means more jobs for the same old boys. If you are going to have a club DoR, they need to be professional and accountable, and not just a job for an old mate. IDing talent at different stages of development, from U11s through to Colts needs to happen. There’s a blinkered approach to this process but young men and women develop at different ages so it needs to be continuous. Lastly, for a whole raft of reasons, bring in weight for age structures. Why it hasn’t been done, I just don’t understand. This would increase participation and retention as we lose quality athletes early on due to differing physical development of youngsters.

'I sat there bewildered': High Performance guru on the tricks RA missed - and how they must fix the game

On the positive side with a 5 year contract for EJ, it means McKellar won’t be coach anytime soon. Silver lining right there. But it means squat to me as I got off the RA/Wallabies train 6 months ago and this cluster by RA is just more of the same.

'Major coup': Rennie axed with Eddie Jones returning as Wallabies coach on mammoth deal for two Cups

The disconnect between GPS comps and Rugby is huge. The win at any cost and bugger Rugby ethos is one of the starting points for structural change for Rugby here in Oz. And structural change is the only thing that will bring me back into the Wallaby camp, others are disinterested where as I am out (in the darkness). The GPS and local Rugby representative selection of kids destined wholly and solely for League takes away valuable and finite resources from kids that only want to play Rugby, and negatively affects their development and chances until it’s too late. How this can be changed, I don’t know but it needs to.

The kids are alright: How do we keep junior talent in rugby?

Tighty, I have gone one better. Pariah in the family and among friends – I have gone over to the Darkness. Only in the mens game but I have had enough of the old boys and their BS. Still support the Reds, just bought a season ticket and new jersey but I have an All Blacks jersey and will be wearing it at next years WC final. Of course, my second team is Wallabies but I simply cannot put up with the rubbish dished up by rugby at every level in Australia. At the junior level, club level, state/Super level, its just more of the same nepotism and old boys looking after themselves or their mates. And you what!! I now actually enjoy watching the Wallabies play rather than descend into a funk before the games are even over. Its been far better for my ongoing rugby pleasure and enjoyment of the game.

I'm not giving up on the Wallabies, but I have no idea where they're going now

😂

It's pasta joke! Rennie defends mass changes as discipline a killer again in first-ever loss to Italy

Did Paisami make a single pass? Personally I think the blame lies with Tupou, McReight, Paisami, Campbell, McDermott, Vunivalu, Thorn and Simmons.

You think? I doubt it. Not a good team man to start and if it isn’t Tate, I’d prefer Jean any day. But either way, no WC I think Tate will head OS and make a good impression, like most of these rejects do.

Rugby News: Rennie defends Hoops, Foley calls, claims ref erred, ex-Origin player replaces Seibold at England

Numpty, lets not let any small facts get in the way of the argument. That defeats the purpose of getting all frothy at the mouth over players we don’t like. Personally I feel Beale should be drafted in to play 10 &12.

'He's 150kg': Rennie gives odd reason for benching Skelton against 'best in the world', praises Foley impact

Come one Soapy, all the gurus here know Tate can’t pass, can’t tackle, can’t kick, and can’t reach the bench to wash the dishes. Jake Two Step is so much better and you know, can reach the bench. Bow down before your betters mate, gurus one and all.

ANALYSIS: How positive Tate-Nic move sparked Wallabies and why Rennie must develop more combos

Rubbish

REACTION: 'Somehow!' - Wallabies reprieved at the death to open tour with nail biting win over Scotland

Pressure? Really not exactly how most saw it. Foley just dropped it cold and there’s a reasonable expectation that these international players would catch it cleanly and hold onto it.

REACTION: 'Somehow!' - Wallabies reprieved at the death to open tour with nail biting win over Scotland

CM, those kids in U16 and U19 have definitely not yet committed to Rugby, and at least 2 from QLD actually have no intention to continue with Rugby. Definitely heading to League so I have to ask why they are included and resources being wasted. I really do wish we could get meaningful and somehow enforceable commitments from these lads using valuable resources. Pie in the sky, I know….

Seven NRL players Rugby Australia should poach

I stuck on growing a lemon tree from a seed……
However, whilst pondering Frankly Lemonseed I have some small experience with this pathway thing. My son would like to progress further (if talented enough) but how? Without hitting a SR development squad, there’s very little pathway. His only option at the moment is to look at going OS which is viable for us but not so much many others.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

Thanks Nick. Really enjoy your analysis pieces and this one in particular.
Shows how one player’s actions or lack of action can affect the perceived performance of team mates. I think this happens way too often especially on forums like this. Player W had a rubbish game at 6 or 8 and should be dropped, not a test player, etc etc etc. In fact, perhaps Player W was making up for the unacknowledged and unseen shortcomings of Player P?
And until this I hadn’t realised that it was not only Foley missing tackles, nor how badly they affect the play further on. Clearly guilty in that game of too much following the ball. I usually do try to track what’s happening off the ball and referred this article to my son given it’s value.

ANALYSIS: The Pete Samu weakness that makes Hoops a must start when he's ready to reclaim Wallabies' No.7 jersey

Speaking of parochial bleating…… you still have not made any factually correct counters. Seriously, I like Tate but he is a work in progress for sure. Your battering is just unwarranted as the poor fellow was only talking about this year, not last year. Clown act.

REPORT CARD: Every Wallabies player rated, with biggest improvers and major concerns, from TRC

Wrong state Jacko. And apparently a poor pass and no kicking game. According to the experts…… but let’s not bring any state based bias into this, at least not if you’re a Queenslander.

REACTION: Rennie and Wallabies 'crumble' in Auckland again as All Blacks put on a 'masterclass'

All lined up for milking….

REACTION: Rennie and Wallabies 'crumble' in Auckland again as All Blacks put on a 'masterclass'

So, tell me how good the revolving door at 10 was this week!! Allowing for being behind a beaten pack, absolute rubbish. This kind of effort, selection and lack of game plans is why I changed allegiance. And Jake 2 step slow as a wet week as usual. But anyways, ABs won with the bonus point and rolled the Saffas for the RC. One saving grace for sure.

REACTION: Rennie and Wallabies 'crumble' in Auckland again as All Blacks put on a 'masterclass'

As long as they are from NSW….
