Ahhhhh the sweet memories ???? ???? ????
The year was 2010….
“John O’Neill On Offsiders on Sunday morning,”
O’Neill claimed that the ARU had done research after Melbourne Storm games asking why people went to Storm games. He went on to say that the majority stated it was because there was no rugby union in Melbourne and then stated he was confident that the Rebels would surpass the Storm soon.

JOHN CONNOLLY: 'It's a disgrace that the Rebels were set up to fail from day one'

Does the failure of the Rebels prove that rugby has no business in Melbourne?

Battleground full of losers leaves more instability for Australian rugby as RA plays a risky game

CONFIRMED: RA axe Rebels from Super Rugby, shocked players told news in meeting with Waugh and Herbert

What a great success this has been!!! I was a doubter. But WOW!! already getting mate together for a Las Vegas trip next year. Love it. Congratulations Peter V’landys.

Viva Las V'landys: Vegas party has started for the NRL but it is hard to tell if there's an American flavour ... yet

Quick!! Call Raelene Castle!! She’s a woman. After the great job she did at the Bulldog and RA what could go wrong. I don’t care what sex they are. I want the best person not a female for the sake of it.

V'landys may as well be executive chair because he's doing both jobs but league needs to fix lack of female leadership

Cope harder. This is old news. It’s now 2024
Rugby League viewership was 171.8m
AFL viewership was 93.2m
Thats a a massacre. doesn’t matter how you paint it.

10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares

“The NRL is a good tv spectacle however tv networks aren’t prepared to pay over and above what they provide the AFL.”
The AFL had 18 team in the last TV deal the NRL had 16. Once the NRL have 18 or 20 teams the AFL will never ever get more money then the NRL. As for the GF that can change year in year out. Having the Swans, Lions or Storm playing can change which code gets better national ratings.

Ok Bro, Live in denial or prove me wrong. Take the L and move on. NRL is Australia’s most watched sport!!! Cope Harder

10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares

Oh Gyfox,
So wrong again.
Those figures are for the NRL only. No including SoO or Internationals.
Stop trying to sugar coat the fact the AFL can’t rate anywhere near the NRL.

NRL broadcast figures outstripping AFL, with 93.2m viewers tuning into Telstra Premiership matches on Nine and Fox Sports compared to 91m for AFL’s free-to-air and pay-tv coverage. Overall, rugby league viewership was 171.8m, making the code Australia’s most watched sport;

Huge growth of interest in the expanded NRLW, with 7.2m viewers watching NRLW compared to 6.1m AFLW viewers – despite the rival code playing more than twice as many matches (99 to 48). More than 1m viewers tuned into the NRLW grand final, which was watched by a crowd of 40649 fans at Accor Stadium, while NRLW content views were up 31% on http://NRL.com and video views by 48%;

“The Storm in Melbourne is very much a secondary entity.”
Funny that’s what people say about the AFL in NSW ACT & QLD

Is Opening Round actually a good idea by the AFL after all?

So how is that different to any given weekend during the season.
eg. AFL on different nights to NRL. It’s not. People can go to the NRL in Brisbane, Sydney and GC.

I notice you didn’t mention the fact that the NRL has Melbourne to itself. With the Melbourne Storm playing Penrith on the Friday night. with NO AFL.

Is Opening Round actually a good idea by the AFL after all?

@Munro Mike,

Bro, do some research!

The AFL is on the Same Night 2 hours after the Parramatta V Bulldogs match at Parramatta Stadium. Which is just down the road from GWS V Collingwood.
So “NO” the AFL is going up again the NRL Western Sydney Derby.

As for Brisbane the Dolphins are Playing the Cowboys in the Queensland Derby at Suncorp on the same weekend in Brisbane as the LIONS.

As for the Gold Coast. The Titans are Playing StGeorge a few hours after the Sun v Richmond.

In reality The NRL has Melbourne to itself. That never happens. With the Melbourne Storm playing Penrith on the Friday night. with NO AFL.

Is Opening Round actually a good idea by the AFL after all?

Like the AFL in NSW and QLD the NRL have lots of money and will play the long game in Perth. The NRL will over take the Force on day one and never fall back. Super Rugby can’t compete. Super Rugby is now dead man walking.

'Hunger Games in headgear': Why cash is flowing out west (and it's not to do with Twiggy)

Big call piru. I’d say the next team add will be Perth. But only time will tell.

'Hunger Games in headgear': Why cash is flowing out west (and it's not to do with Twiggy)

This could be an embarrassing disaster. LOL

Like the AFL had in China. Remember no one turn up and Gillon McLachlan said everyone was getting a beer at the bar when the cameras filmed the empty stands.

Less said about McLachlan idea of taking game to Wellington NZ a few years ago the better.

Is Opening Round actually a good idea by the AFL after all?

There is only 2 game being played in Las Vegas. The rest of the round is being played in Sydney, Gold Coast, Auckland and Melbourne. So it total BS think the AFL is getting a free kick in QLD and NSW. If anything the Storm are getting a free kick with no AFL in Melbourne that weekend.

Is Opening Round actually a good idea by the AFL after all?

“Can WA make Rugby a better social experience, and by doing that increase crowd size and participation, than League in particular?”

Probably, Until the NRL put a team in Perth and Rugby will drop down the pecking order.

No sporting club will ever have the pulling power of the AFL in Melbourne. EVER.
Pre 1998 Rugby League was behind Marbles or hula hooping in Melbourne.
Now the Melbourne Storm have the highest attendance. The highest TV ratings and gets the most media attention. On any metric you can think of for a non AFL football club/code in Melbourne.
Rugby in Victoria was founded in Melbourne in 1888 and had a massive advantage over Rugby League as it was played in school and had Clubs.
You can see why in 2010 John O’Neill said
“We had done research after Melbourne Storm games asking why people went to Storm games. That the majority stated it was because there was no rugby union in Melbourne & then stated he was confident that the Rebels would surpass the Storm soon.”

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

@fiwiboy7042
“Every other sporting competition in the state, except possibly soccer and even then …, has to live off the scraps.”
The Melbourne Storm is very successful. Coming from a zero base in 1998 to the strongest non AFL club team in Victoria.

CONFIRMED: Rebels fall into voluntary administration as Rugby Australia seeks 'sustainable and successful future'

@sheek
Don’t try and put the NRL/RL in the same boat as the dying Rugby Union in Australia.
The NRL/RL has never been stronger then right now. From junior development to TV ratings and crowds.
.The AFL & Soccer BS take over of the NRL has been told to me for 40 plus years and the NRL only gets stronger & stronger. The only change that will happen in the coming years is we will only have two professional codes NRL & AFL then daylight. A-League and Super Rugby are dead.

Fears for Rebels' future as debt threatens their Super Rugby existence - but CEO says 'we will be fine'

@Bluffboy.

“That same franchise started in Adelaide and then moved to Perth where it folded both times due to a lack of support.”

I think you need a history lesson Bluffboy.
Western Reds (Perth) started in 1995 by the then ARL.
The Adelaide Rams started in 1997 by Super League.
Both club got off to a great start with good crowds. (better than anything the Rebels have ever got) It was the merger of the ARL and Super League into the NRL that had to reduce teams 1998.
