From the neck down, Robinson actually looks like Merv.

UK View: 'Depressingly poor' England lose their heads as Woakes claims unwanted place in history

Coincidentally, while grappling with OUTR’s explanation of his new statistical method batting average after omitting arbitrarily determined “meaningless” and “absolute junk” runs , I said F-f-fuh-f-f-f-f-fuh-fuh under my breath. More than a f-fuh-few times.

Ashes Scout: Shock 'favourite' to replace Langer, suffering Stokes should be dropped for own good

> Add in 58 limited-overs internationals and his recent work on Australian pitches in the BBL and he feels capable of a smooth transition to the five-day game.

Full marks for the positive attitude. But it’s not obvious that swinging at pies off flat decks is good preparation for facing Cummins, Boland, Starc and Green when the ball is doing a bit.

> Naturally, Stokes gave all of himself to his task

Unlike all of the other Eng and Aus quicks, who are just jogging in and rolling the arm over?!

UK View: 'Bittersweet' Broad fights back with 'craft, sweat and toil,' but Root blunder lets Usman rule the roost

3.5 overs is being bowled into the ground? After bowling 11 overs in the previous Test then having 8-9 days off?
> Archer bowled 82 overs in 10 days.
Stokes has bowled 64 overs in 31 days! (Out of the team total of about 540.)
Clearly he was not fully fit on arrival. At most you could argue that he’s been overselected.

Surely Marsh is in purely as Covid cover for Cam Green as all-rounder, just as Maddinson is there to cover the batters and Inglis for Carey.

Sounds like he’s in sparkling form.

Khawaja gets his chance as Pat Cummins confirms Australia's XI for Sydney's Ashes Test

How about the “Stokes, Woakes, Fowkes and some other blokes XI”?

Batting to be 'a bit easier' in Sydney, claims England youngster

I really didn’t think the MCG pitch and conditions were overly helpful to the bowlers. The bowlers just bowled superbly: the Aussies for most of both innings and the English sporadically. If Crawley or the rest of the junior Eng batters think that was a bowlers’ paradise they must have learned their cricket slogging half-volleys off concrete. Oh wait…

Batting to be 'a bit easier' in Sydney, claims England youngster

Why would the selectors drop a player for being too good?

Batting to be 'a bit easier' in Sydney, claims England youngster

That’s England’s dilemma. Top players now rarely have captaincy experience at lower levels. Who do they have that’s played more than more than a dozen Tests, is under 38 and is assured of a place in the team for more than the next game or two?

Stokes dismisses England captaincy talk

That’s 90% of sports journalism. Ask the obvious question, get the boilerplate answer.

Stokes dismisses England captaincy talk

Ha! Remember when Paul Collingwood looked a bit bemused by being booed onto the WACA? (Hint: surname.)

Stokes dismisses England captaincy talk

I assume the booing was because he took forever to appear after the fall of the previous wicket. There’s no good reason why he needed to take so long aside from gamesmanship (stalling for time) or incompetence (forgot he was next man in).

Was there any follow-up to that? It used to be that you had 2 minutes to get on the field after the last wicket and this must have been way past that. It’s not that I wanted him to be timed out, because then that would have become the big story, not Australia’s brilliant last session. But there should be repercussions.

Hmm… you’d think keepers would have to work on being comfortable on both sides whatever their dominant hand. A third or more of the batters are lefties so plenty of chances will go to either side.

Ashes Scout: Former great's plan to save English cricket, whitewash hero's 'brave' choice for Head replacement

Agreed. Too much overt support just gives the press another hook to hang their mischief on when the management changes.

If Langer is a goner, Ponting must be next in line

Thorpe’s analysis is right on the money. (BTW there’s a longer write-up of the same presser in Cricinfo which makes some additional points, all good.)

Thorpe pointed to the careers of Steve Smith and David Warner … as proof of how much evolution and learning is required on an individual level to succeed in Test cricket.
Excellent examples, to which you could add Hayden, Langer and Martyn. They all came into the Test team with obvious potential and solid results in a tough first-class competition. All failed, were dropped and spent a long time in the wilderness turning potential into actual Test quality.

Ashes Scout: Former great's plan to save English cricket, whitewash hero's 'brave' choice for Head replacement

If he had problems with footwork, concentration, keeping to spin, etc, that obviously would be more serious and not something that could be fixed between Tests.

Ashes Scout: Former great's plan to save English cricket, whitewash hero's 'brave' choice for Head replacement

Yeah, that’s a little concerning. Good keepers must own the territory between leg slip and first slip’s bootlaces. If they can get a full glove to it, it’s theirs. On the bright side, it’s an isolated problem that can easily be worked on at practice. It doesn’t affect the rest of his work, which has been very good so far.

Ashes Scout: Former great's plan to save English cricket, whitewash hero's 'brave' choice for Head replacement

We had a (very good) fast bowler who was red-green colourblind. He could usually lock onto a moving ball but would struggle to see it against the grass if it stopped rolling, in which case the nearby fielders would shout advice and point. The skipper preferred to field him at third man given the slightly increased danger of his being maimed by a mishit hook at fine leg.

The real reason why the majority don’t want fast bowling captains

We’d enjoy learning from your experience of how to minimise cases and keep lockdowns to a minimum.
Meanwhile the England hierarchy could give JL and the boys some tips re coaching, selection, tactics, etc. That would be great to hear also.
Thanks.

Travis Head tests positive for COVID-19, ruled out of SCG Test

I do think it’s a shame, though. IMO Test cricket is sport and T20/ODIs are “content”: endless interchangeable hours of cheap TV, easy to watch, instantly forgotten.

UK View: 'Show your face': 'Embarrassing, abysmal and humiliated,' England careers on the line

I think you’re right, Twizz: most of the audience will go where the wins are till the wins dry up and they watch something else. The die-hard Test-loving generations will stick with their dwindling sport then die and not be replaced.

UK View: 'Show your face': 'Embarrassing, abysmal and humiliated,' England careers on the line

I agree with Vaughan’s comment that it was poor of the other England players to leave the field for Root’s post-match “sh*t sandwich taste test” interview. (Surely they weren’t told by team management to do this.)

All you can do in the dressing room is feel sorry for yourself, and the memory of that will fade pretty fast. Any England player who wants to try to take back the Ashes in two or four years time should be out on the field:
1. Finding out, in front of an ecstatic opposition crowd, how awful it feels to lose a series so quickly and comprehensively.
2. Seeing in your opponents’ body language how great it would feel to win or retain the Ashes.
3. Wondering if their preparation, attitude and focus were adequate this time and what they might do differently if given another chance next time.

Not incidentally they should be out there supporting their skipper as a team.
