I remember watching an English ref, years ago, thinking “wow, i wish they were all like him”. Turns out he is a lawyer.

A far from golden generation of forwards has left the All Blacks badly exposed

reason for that, Chucked, that the Pacific Islands have been cynically mined for talent by both their big bro neighbours, and kept away from effective participation in their national teams by selfish Euro/Brit clubs. They are now getting some small part of what they fully earned decades ago. Get used to it.

Watched the AllBlacks In Their Own Words series, which covers some of that ground, and the Women’s 3 X 12 min. clips on the World Cup journey. Very fine work, doing justice to the high drama, (perhaps the last couple of years has been exceptional; we had some great purple patches in the past, but those days are over) and also I think, extremely perceptive and courageous, in the deep sharing. I felt brought alongside. Someone in their PR dept. is a genius. I’ll watch; if they can bring my brother alongside, they’ll be hailed as “move over, Einstein”

great article, thanks, JDK. I have wondered what was going on with those 1, 2, and 3 test All Blacks. There were some I would have liked to see more of. Ian and his team of coaches are very good though; the way Ian handled the adversity last year was phenomenal. Players will give more for a man like him. And what he said about the Webb-Ellis trophy resonates. The Bledisloe is the big thing. The RWC is a hyped-up festival of pajama games. Who dares, wins, depending on biorhythms, injuries and the ref. What I love about this RWC is to see Fiji and Samoa finally displaying their power after decades of being disadvantaged. And, Eddie’s remarks about Fiji the Dark Horse aside, I think the Wallabies are probably just as Dark, notwithstanding the Motherhood statements enshrined in the national anthem. My choice would be a Wallabies-All Blacks final.

“The All Blacks winning percentage of 59.60 against South Africa is its lowest against any nation – underlining what a tough rival South Africa is for the team in black”
Lies and stats. For most of this history, the referees were on hot coals if any other team won in the republic. Sad, but fact.

my partner was born in Pretoria, also doesn’t read non-fiction, and greatly enjoyed me reading this article aloud
