As Paul said, ABs been a bit disadvantaged recently due to injury. I don’t think there has been a player so destructive yet so disciplined. An example of the latter was in Adelaide 2012 when SA were 3 for not many and AB helped save the game with 33 runs from 220 balls in four hours!. No Aussie could do that although there have been signs of a greater sense of discipline and awareness of the game situation.

Is AB de Villiers great, or just very good?

It shapes as an exciting series and if SA bowl as they did in Aus last time then I fear for those of dubious technique: Bancroft of the crooked down swing, S. Marsh and Kawaja lacking forward momentum when driving and Handscomb, well, he must be incredibly talented to be where he is with that technique.

Added to that is the lack of warm up matches. Aussies should be ready by the fourth test. It’s little wonder why so many overseas teams struggle. Something seriously needs to be done about that.

Having said all that, SA have looked awesome on paper for years and apart from their great victory in Aus, don’t have much to show for it.

South Africa by 24 points.

South Africa's pace depth is simply scary

Maxwell is obviously a match winner with a very good technique. He seems to have this great energy out on the field. However, he loses his shape when trying to hit the ball too hard at times and hasn’t helped the Aust cause by being too aggressive when only a run a ball is needed. Think of the Stoinis and Maxwell dismissals in the final one dayer. I think Smith wants Maxie to read the game situation more intelligently. Having said all that, he’s a much better package than Head. I even think he’d do well in the test team to replace M. Marsh if the wicket is susceptible to turn.

Maxwell is Australia's one-day man. Someone tell Steve Smith

I agree with you guys re mental fatigue. Added to this is the fact that Warner is very much an eye player so now that he’s the wrong side of 30, his ordinary footwork isn’t going to help him much. Do we really want him playing T20 with such a hectic schedule? A question for you guys, why (Warner included) do so many Aussies have poor techniques? I’m thinking of Marsh and Kawaja laying back when driving, Handsomb and Bancroft. It is concerning that they are the best batsmen in Australia. Success comes with that back and across movement: Smith exaggeratedly so and think of Steve Waugh when he redefined his technique. Hope they prove me wrong in South Africa.

When will the real David Warner stand up in the T20 format?
