With full a full squad, defense is carltons strongest part of the field, a developing forward line, it is the midfield that is the glaring weakness that needs to be concentrated on improving for 2019.
Cripps is a nice piece to build around

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

It failed miserably in 2018. This is not what Carlton planned for

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

Lobbe was only brought in as a third ruckman for security.
Palmer and Smedts were only throw ins on getting deals done that Carlton actually wanted to get done.
Unsure of our treatment, he is a player that could have offered us something in the short term

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

It’s poor thinking Macca, particularly with Carltons current position in bringing in quality 24-27.
We can bring in players that will be around for 1-3 years as the younger players develop to replace them over that same period.
The right veterans would also help in these players development over this period

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

Need to bring in a minimum of 3 mature players from or the midfieldand an upgrade on Lamb in the forward line, but with a list of 42 I wouldn’t want more than 4-5 older players come into the club at the expense younger players still showing potential. It’s a balancing act this off season

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

Carlton need to fix the short term and long term. They can do both

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

Currently, Blair (and Anthony Miles) is a much better player than O’Brien, Cunningham, Pickett and Polson. Hopefully that won’t be be the case in 12 – 24 months time.
And why play the likes of Blair and Miles ahead of those listed youngsters, have you been watching Carlton’s midfield this year?

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

And that’s the problem the problem with 24-27 year Olds , they mostly come at cost in trades.
Free agents don’t involve trading out our current assets. We only may have them for a few years, but by then the young players on our list should be ready to compete consistently at AFL level.
1-3 year midfielders at the club will take the load of the few mids at the club taking on to much of the load at the moment while the younger players develop

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

Jarryd Blair has proven himself to be a much more capable AFL player than Graham and would easily be in Carltons best 22, even with a full squad.
I understand the comparison at VFL level though.

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

I certainly like the idea of bringing in a quality veteran, like McVeigh, in for a a year or 2.
After the recent experience of bringing in Dale Thomas to the club with an injury, I would be hesitant to now bring in an injured Hannebery

Why Carlton could use some experienced Swans

If we can get him (very) cheap Blair would offer good value to Carlton for a few years.
Target the a graders, but we’ve got to also bring a few veterans to help out our midfield for a couple of years to lead the youngster’s and give them time to develop

How bad is too bad?

Unless it is an incredible deal for Carlton, I can’t see the point in giving up access to the number 1 player in the draft in a rebuild.
There are players that are available at a cheaper cost to the club that can give immediate short term assistance, while Carlton continue to build for the long term through the draft.
I’d feel like Carlton have baulked in a game of chicken if we trade out that number one pick for anything, but the most one sided deal in recent history.
Carlton have preached staying the course, it will be interesting to see if they have the ticker to stay the course this off season and the innovation to also fix the here and now

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

Miles should be at Carlton next year. I also think we should be looking at Jaryd Blair or Fasalo.
Aaron Hall, despitethe knocks on the defensive aspect of his game? And of course Wallis from the Bulldogs, but that would cost us something.
Then there will be the veteran free agents being pushed out of other clubs lists due to their age rather than ability that we don’t have to trade anything for

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

If Polson shows improvement over the next few weeks he will probably stay. I would keep lamb for depth, but hopefully he is not in our best 22 next season

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

An uncompetitive midfield this season has put incredible pressure on an undermanned defense and provided poor service to the forward line.
Carlton don’t need the complete overhaul many think, in fact a lot of the pieces are likely already in place. It’s simple for Carlton this off season fix the midfield and even in the midfield a lot of the pieces are already in place.
Potential is a dirty word, but 23 and under Carlton have Cripps, Fisher, Cunningham, SPS, Dow, O’Brien and Kennedy. Sure not all of those players will reach the heights we hope, but that is a talented group of young midfielders. We could possibly be adding Sam Walsh to that list soon. That would be 7 highly rated young midfielders on the list.
Potential is great, but of course Carlton need midfield help in the here and now . That is greatest failing of the list going into 2018, hopefully corrected for 2019. With the young group coming through and our current group of veterans the addition of 3 quality mature aged midfielders and an upgrade on Lamb would make a significant difference to Carltons fortunes in 2019. And they don’t have to be superstars, but they do need to be genuine competitors to bring that attitude to the club. With the young group coming through they also don’t need to be at the club more than a couple years. Free agents mean Carlton don’t have to trade existing assets.

So 3 midfielders and a small forward. The question is which should we target and which players can we convince to come to the club?

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

It has been the worst season I can remember as a Carlton supporter, but as negative as I can be all this doom and gloom stuff on the blues future is a little over the top at the moment.
Carlton went into the season with an acknowledged lack of depth in the midfield. The lack of depth and maturity in our midfield, along with so many injuries, particularly to our defensive group has resulted in what we have seen this season.
But honestly, if Carlton make the right moves in the offseason the improvement isn’t that far away.
Our defensive unit looked pretty settled coming into the season, but injuries to Docherty, Williamson , Byrne, Marchbank and now Plowman has damaged the area of the ground which had been Carltons strength the last 2seasons.
As for the forward line if Harry Mckay lives up to the potential he is teasing with, Carlton have their two key forwards in place for the next 10 years. Pickett (mostly injured) and Wright are quality small forwards, but Carlton need to upgrade Jed Lamb. When our midfield depth improves those players will also rotate through the forward line. I think the forward itself is less of a problem than the service it received from our midfield this season.

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

I would play Kerridge each weekfor that very reason, he competes. So many in our current 22 play as though competing is an option. Forget potential talent Carlton need to play the players that work the hardest. By the end of the season Bolton at least has to have (re) set the standard of the required level of effort required to compete in the AFL.
You don’t have to win every time you compete, but they must compete in every contest with the intent to win.

Carlton's nightmare continues at the hands of St Kilda

Carlton did bring in 4 mature aged players last off season in Lobbe, Shaw, O’Shea and Mullett. It just so happens they’ve been poor this season.

They also brought in Kennedy and Lang thinking they would add to our midfield, both have had injury problems and I think Kennedy will prove a valuable aquisition in the long term, I’m undecided on Lang.

Carlton couldn’t help the injuries to Lang and Kennedy, but their selection of mature aged players was poor, some might even say a mistake Macca.

Brisbane show they are miles ahead of Carlton

Mullet lined up round 1. Even if he was brought in for depth it was expected that he would be someone who would play. Every team gets some injuries.
As for O’Brien, I know he has potential, but in 2018 he is a very poor AFL player and shouldn’t be playing at the highest level. And watching OBrien from the stands on the weekend I can tell you his work rate is deplorable. Just jogging about, he puts in no effort to get to the contest, even when it’s only a few metres in front of him. I wouldn’t just ommit him, I was suspend and send him to work as a labourer and tell that’s where he will find himself permenantly if he ever puts an effort like that in wearing the Carlton jumper again.

The lack of development in 2018 in our younger players, Curnow and Fisher excluded, (and Dow is starting to show a bit) has been disappointing, so let’s just hope those first rounders come good because plenty have struggled in 2018. Some due to injury to themselves, others from having to much asked of them because of injuries to others. I hope Carlton haven’t wrecked yet another young group of talented players.

And I’m a bit worried about your building plan Macca, you might want to put the frame up before you put on the roof. Put on the roof with no structure, that sounds a lot like the Chris Judd rebuilding plan.

Brisbane show they are miles ahead of Carlton

Carlton weren’t planning on having the worst season in club history. Injury has hurt, but this lists midfield was always going to struggle and that comes down to list management.

And as for housing analogy, you don’t put on a roof until after you’ve laid the foundations and Carlton still have yet to complete that phase of building

The fact that Alex Silvagni and plowman are in our leadership team highlights the lack of leaders in our team.
And how many in our leadership team are Backmen?
I thought until injury hit we had the balance of experience and youth right in the backline, it was in midfield that there was a glaring lack of depth in quality mature aged players to lead the youngster’s or at least take the pressure off them. It was a mistake in list management going into 2018, one the club acknowledges, and will attempt to correct in the offseason. It will be interesting to see how they go about bringing in players because Carlton was an easier sell at the end of last year than it is now

Mullet was expected to play seniors

I know what they stated, but bringing in Lobbe, Mullet, OShea and Shaw last off season shows me that’s not what they did.
They saw the need to bring in mature players and did it. They just chose the wrong ones.
Lang could also belong on that list.
Bringing in young talent has remained the priority though.
