You’re quite unkind in your comments towards a guy who’s clear just a fan who wants to write a piece of rugby commentary for us all to enjoy. I don’t think his intentions were as malicious as your comments thus far.

Boks blow it against All Blacks

Aah yes. Faf makes more than a hundred runs in a hostile environment after a week of media ridicule for something Steve Smith has said everyone does. What arrogance!

I know youre biased towards the Aussies in every aspect David but that doesn’t preclude you from being gracious.

The trick to Test cricket? Mindset plays a huge role

Agree with you BB. I think the situation is now so dire that boks fans are willing to revert to whatever game plan used to work just to scrape a win. Overall it’s almost like the death knell of the game in SA.

The Wrap: Test rugby goes back to the future, and not for the better

Brilliant analogy of the seagulls fighting for a chip. I’ll remember that one.

Morne Steyn's boot keeps wasteful Wallabies winless at Loftus

Was an absolute snooze fest. 1 try scored and minimal continuous passages of play. Ill take the win though. All hail oupa Morne. Pretty sad theres no one else in SA at number 10 atm.

Springboks vs Wallabies highlights: Steyn boots Springboks to victory

I’ll take the win but I mourn the fact that we have reverted back to the most boring game plan imaginable. I don’t have to see Morne kicking the pill for 80 minutes!! Great defense today though.

Springboks vs Wallabies highlights: Steyn boots Springboks to victory

I think its typical pi$$ poor player management making him debut against the ABs in New Zealand while we are losing. How is that supposed to set him up with confidence? Terrible short sighted way of using a talent.

All Blacks vs Springboks highlights: All Blacks win by 28

Agreed to some extent. Without sounding too negative, I do feel that for as long as I can remember the boks have been a team with moments of brilliance but more often than not they created a degree of frustration for me as a die hard fan. What I mean by that is: their results have always been a bit inconsistent and often not quite up the their potential. Even the really great boks teams (circa 98 and 2007) had games where you wonder what the hell was going on – particularly during end of year northern H tours. Why is that? Why would they run close against poorer northern H teams when you know they can play way better… The reason for this still escapes me.

Could an All Blacks second-23 beat the rest?

Good points Coconut except no one ever want England to win… no matter what the cost 😉
Had an old aussie prof in school who said he barracks for the Wallabies first and then any team playing England.

Could an All Blacks second-23 beat the rest?

This might make kiwis feel really good but overall it doesn’t help the code to have foregone conclusions in test matches. I appreciate what a team the all blacks are. Just thinking about the game as a whole.

Could an All Blacks second-23 beat the rest?

Great article. Succint summary of SA rugby.

Question:
Why are the players leaving South Africa for more money when SARU is arguably the wealthiest of the SANZAR setup? i.e. Why cant we pay our players dollars or whatever when we have so much supposed cash?

Also, I am surprised that the downfall of SA rugby and in particular the racial interference is not condemned by other tier 1 rugby nations. The pool of good competition in rugby is not big and dropping one of those nations put international rugby union is peril for everyone including the mighty darkness. Who will be their biggest foe?

A magum opus of a Springbok annus horribilis

PDivvy was very fortunate with the team he inherited. It is relatively well known that the senior players in that team were contributing to coaching.

I do agree that the traditional Afrikaner coaches have been pretty woeful. But this article and Paul as a writer have nothing to do with Apartheid so give it a rest.

A Black bridge too far

Completely agree Biltong. I distinctly remember the passing skills of Duane Vermeulen in 2013 or 2014 to offload the ball during one the the games against the darkness. Not to mention the pass resulting in Du Preez’s corner flag try in the RWC. The quick hands shown by Francois Louw this weekend also alludes to the notion that those skills are very shallow under the surface. Good coach, less politics, better team morale and those skills will be on display within a year. But we know I’ve got fever dreams.

A Black bridge too far

So sad. What an absolute talent this guy is! His game before breaking his ankle had me convinced he was going to be in a Wallaby jumper for a long time to come. Get well soon mate.

Lealiifano diagnosed with Leukaemia

Hi Nick,

Agree with what you said here. The only other game plan that comes to mind as effective against a rush defense would be that of the 2007 springboks. Big fowards with damaging pick and go runs, good kickers for touch with a solid line out and maul. Takes the rush defence out of the equation.

Certainly would not recommend the lions attempt that, but from an academic point of view I imagine that sort of a gameplan with the right players would counter it effectively.

Why the Hurry-canes rush defence holds the key to the Super Rugby final

Mother of pearl. The sheer amount of moaning about how fatigued the highlanders were and how unfair the system is. And altitude as if that’s something new. Home ground advantage is a two way street. Cowbells and chainsaws come to mind.

Sucks now that the shoe is on the other foot it seems! For a decade the south African sides had horrendous travel schedules. Didn’t see any kiwis complaining then.

Lions vs Highlanders highlights: Lions win nine-try thriller, secure place in the final

1. Shame they didn’t ban him from the RC. His form is quite subpar and seems to enjoy kicking more than he used to.
2. Although that fall made the hair on the back of my neck stand up I struggle to see how carding the competing player is good for competition under the high ball. Players will become less inclined to compete in case someone falls badly and they are deemed responsible.

Springbok Le Roux suspended for one match

I think you are confusing poor form with some sort of transformation issue. Jantjies is not an international flyhalf period.

Springboks vs Ireland highlights: South Africa win the series

It seems you’re saying he had a good game then?
I don’t think that tackle is excusable – it was one-on-one. The number of players on the field at the time if irrelevant.
My overall sentiment is that he performed poorly and avoids contact. Surely not the man you need in the RC.
Don’t stereotype me as a Morne fan.

Springboks vs Ireland highlights: South Africa win the series

The rugby championship is going to be a massacre for the boks. Totally inept performance from jantjies in particular. Has he ever actually cleared from his own 22? That tackle he missed for Ireland to score was a blight on an otherwise good defensive effort. His kick of JPP to go over was lucky at best.

Springboks vs Ireland highlights: South Africa win the series

The concept to transformation (which I think is a dumb word) is noble and certainly worthwhile. There are some seriously athletic black people, not to mention adding an extra 40 million people to the pool of potential players.

What doesn’t make sense is starting at the top, for the simple reason that if the springbok brand is brought down to mediocrity then there would be no impetuous for young black south africans to play rugby anyways because the national team is a joke. Defeats the purpose.

Start with funding primary and high school rugby programs and competitions with scholarships etc and see the talent rise to the top within a decade.

I won’t comment about the transformation issue again as I have now said my peace.

Springboks get out of jail against Ireland

Hey Bro, great article. Perfectly summarized my sentiments after the game. I have been mourning SA rugby since that court case immediately prior to the world cup. I saw the writing on the wall. It’s no surprise that when a team is maliciously sued prior to the world cup the morale will be poor. Then Japan happened.

Given the political interference (and I am not implying that this is the sole reason for our poor form) you cannot expect players of any background to have a burning passion for the jersey. Everyone has their future constantly niggling in the back of their mind, no matter who they are.

What’s interesting is that I now love watching Bok rugby but I’ve also started following all kinds of other teams (northern H in particular) which may be a way of transitioning from an SA die-hard to an all round rugby fan.

Springboks get out of jail against Ireland

Clearly the substitutes including combrinck and mostert need to start. Jantjies was a zero on a contract.
