To be fair I’m just sick of inappropriate selection of music before the games. The music should be in line with the intensity and spirit of the game. Having pop acts like Jason Derulo and Macklemore does very little to enhance the ferocity and spectacle. Let’s just all agree that Cold Chisel and ACDC play every year for time eternal.

The NRL grand final is yet more proof that politics and sport are intertwined

Purely speculative. Why then do teams fight so hard to play a home final? It clearly makes no difference where a team plays in your model. There are well known fortresses in the league that get teams over the line week-in week-out. You are kidding yourself if you think Shark Park and Allianz Stadium represent(ed) the same mental proposition for the Cowboys.

Suburban grounds are not the answer

So the crowd numbers were:

16,115 10/09/2017 NRL QF: Sharks v Cowboys Allianz Stadium
15,408 9/09/2017 NRL QF: Sea Eagles v Panthers Allianz Stadium
22,626 9/09/2017 NRL QF: Storm v Eels AAMI Park
21,212 8/09/2017 NRL Finals: Roosters v Broncos Allianz Stadium

All of these crowds would have comfortably fitted into any suburban ground and the game would have been better for it.

Manly and the Sharks would have also got the benefit they earned from the home ground advantage and their home crowds would have got them home.

The NRL is push forward in the wrong areas and needs to go back to basics to build up a solid and parochial fan based before it can claim once again to be a successful sport in the national landscape.

As others have said it starts at Week 1. Fans need to know their team will play at the same ground 13 weeks of the season and they can gain comfort in the rhythm.
