Most clubs allow anyone at any time, but generally what happens is you are drawn to what you know and are comfortable with.
So if you went to school in Blacktown chances are you are not interested in playing rugby for Randwick, and alternatively if you went to Riverview you don’t want to play RL for Doonside.
And that is exactly how Sydney has been excluding a demographic.

@ Punter, that would mean your attitude would be not be normal, if indifferent was the standard.
Anyone who understands Australian sports and cultural history of this country knows that there has never been a attitude of indifference to Australian Football in Sydney.

I will probably incur the wrath of the soccer boys, but IME the expensive private schools in South play AF and in the North RU, there may be as many soccer teams or in some cases more at these schools, but the real athletes and talented kids ( not all but most) don’t play soccer. A lot ( but not all) play soccer because they must play some sort of school sport, no doubt this sounds stereotypical, but from what i have witnessed it holds true.

Quite clearly Sydney football is and has been for 100 years run along class lines.
The have’s play one brand of football, the have not’s another, that is simply Sydney.
You really must be indifferent to many things if you cant simply acknowledge that private school RU actively excludes the working class RL.

I can only speak personally as well, but it appears you don’t actually read these boards very well at all if you think very very few people express animosity to the club, they are actually a sizable minority.
Many RL fans have a entrenched bunkered down animosity to the AFL, that is pretty clear, they are not indifferent.
The animosity that exists between a sizable minority of RL fans towards AFL football does not happen anywhere else in Australia between the codes to the same extent.
It does not happen the other way to the same extent, if at all.
Generally speaking it is AFL fans that are indifferent to RL.

And you have argued all the way down, perhaps you are indifferent, although with the amount of posts it is hard to believe.
But many many people have experiences that are completely opposite to your opinion about the general indifference of primarily RL fans in Sydney, many have experienced outright hostility.
Perhaps you are indifferent about that as well.

Hard to eliminate something if it never existed, the game of australian rules football has always been inclusive, different clubs may have one upon a time represented differet classes and stratas but no demo was ever excluded across the board.
Unlike of course Sydney sport.

Code war arguments sell, and they sell in Sydney and i dare say in the West of sydney where the DM reigns supreme.
Your claim that you are indifferent and the bulk of RL fans to AFL is not representative of many peoples experiences in Sydney.

Its quite arguable that the Victorian clubs who subsidised the swans for quite some time have now got big TV deals on the back of them.
