there’s a reason it was called the credit crunch in the uk, banks stopped lending which lead to a crisis of capital and lack of investment, the credit crisis is what had the world in the doldrums for years not the housing collapse that caused the credit crisis at least that was the primary opinion of ben Bernanke the chairman of the fed its an issue of deep personal interest i’m no expert but I’m informed mate

The V'landys mentality is everything that's wrong with league

that’s patently false companies do it all the time, this was one of the major causes of the GFC when banks stopped lending. its very often the better plan to go into debt on an asset that’s going to appreciate than to use liquidity you already have

The V'landys mentality is everything that's wrong with league

matth it’s in the original article, that you commented on, did you want me to just republish that?

The V'landys mentality is everything that's wrong with league

yes but you can operate from a solvent position and not be making a profit like the AFL does which was my point. Of course the afl will return to profitability never mind the liquid assets that they have lying around like the future fund that never got touched during the pandemic. A company making a loss one year can be better run than the one who made the profit the same year

The V'landys mentality is everything that's wrong with league

I’d be happiest with both, I do also watch league even if I prefer AFL

The V'landys mentality is everything that's wrong with league

You don’t have to be profitable to be the better run business amazon is proof of that.

NRL News: AFL laughing as ARL may ask Foxtel for more cash, JWH, Burgess face bans, Munster to leave - Smith

yeah, but the giants are 10 years old, there’s another 20 years to go before we can say if the giants are a failure, the league clubs have what they have and are unlikely to grow much more than population growth

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

well supported is doing some heavy lifting there, Penrith is the only team that’s seriously been able to leverage their supporter base, I do think another Sydney team is a bad idea though I’d give Perth another team seeing as the eagles have more members than seats at the stadium

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

I don’t know what picturesque idealised 1950’s world you’re living in but in the real world is the money that makes the world go round however much we hate that fact, memberships are, have, and will continue to be revenue raising first, culture second, hawks are living proof of that

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

its not fake, memberships are about money coming in, culture of a fan base and growth of the fandom the junior members tick all those boxes, ergo not bloody fake you keep walking al around this topic and missing the point

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

its not free, the kids get in free the parents still have to go, would it kill you to think these things through

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

they still have to sign up, its not automatic mate

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

Still not a farce, that’s future revenue, you get people young they pay for ever, and that’s only a tiny minority of the memberships

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

No, not cherry picking, the afl gets the money from both there home and aways games, and the away games are just as important as the home games, if you can’t draw a crowd for another team you’re hurting them too, would you think for a second then speak

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

No h&a is what I was going by for both teams

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

Different scale entirely mate

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

I was clear in my original it was not since founding it was just 2019 editor changed it, also afl membership numbers are not a farce don’t know what planet you’re on

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

Yeah but the economics of professional sport and amateur are very different in the modern era

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

I was just counting the attendances h&a in 2019 for both teams it was in the original article but the editor changed it for an unknown reason

Dear footy fans: Stop saying you want North or Gold Coast to move to Tassie

South Melbourne moved to Sydney 4 years before West coast was founded and they were the first non Vic AFL state team and the Brisbane bears were founded the same year as west coast

Development, expansion and professionalism: Let's be honest about the future of rugby league

but they also expanded to Sydney and Brisbane at the same time the expanded and exploited existing markets

there was originally going to be five but I realised that was getting overly long, there’s basically a 30 page thesis in each of the topics 😂 thanks

Development, expansion and professionalism: Let's be honest about the future of rugby league

my point is AFL does both and yeah executive roles select for the upper class but membership is broadly working class and the members own the clubs, the divide isn’t the same. Also I guarantee its a lot less than you think, to the extent that a lot of players come out of football academies and local teams in regions, it cuts across class was my point not that it wholly working class or wholly upper class

Development, expansion and professionalism: Let's be honest about the future of rugby league

I get your point with super league but I did know that news owned 50%, the AFL was dead broke in the 90’s no money at all that’s why Fitzroy merged with Brisbane. and the kangaroos nearly merged with the hawks. It was no where near certain that this would be the financial situation of the two leagues especially since the AFL is fundamentally opposed to private ownership of teams after the disasters of the bears and the swans
AFL is also not a private school sport, and as a member of the private school club you over estimate our power. we have posh teams but the richest clubs in the league are the working class teams or the ones that had a monopoly for a while. I think you’re taking a class divide that exists in Sydney sport and applying it nationally where it doesn’t exist.
