surprise surprise, the fox sports team choose wallabies to win. Have they ever tipped the opposition?

Wallabies Vs All Blacks Roar live blog

on current form & h2h matchups of the last few years, i give it to the allblacks, but they have a some what poor record in melhbourne, so who knows?

i think AB;s over 8 points is a good bet @ $2

sheek mentioned earlier, that no matter what sport you play, defense is highly valued, but not always easily recognized.

i think all sports should borrow from each other, and a lot of statistcal categories could probably carry over for analysis. i recall seeing “metres gained” in runs in soccer a long time before i ever saw it in rugby. Now it seems the norm for a telecast to show a player in how many tackles hes done, metres gained, line busts, assists, trys etc.

The same should and can be applied to AFL.

it would be great to see defensive players with stats like; Tackles + spoils, smothers, effective fists, metres gained out of 50, turnovers effected etc. And before anyone says anything about how pointless effective fists are, please tell that to dustin fletcher. He has made a career out of fisting the ball out of his defensive zone!

if anything, it would make the game more enjoyable to watch, and everyone as a whole would see how effective a good defender is if we had something quantifiable to measure against.

BTW Michael, i selected presti a couple of years agon in my dream team, and got absolutely murdered. I think he is a good defender, but it doesnt show on paper as you said 🙂

What's more vital: a gun forward or defender?

i think the whole article is excellent, but the name of the article could very well be, “what do you value more, attack or defense?”

or the debate could very well be, whats more important, attacking or defending qualities? as that would apply to every position rather then just key forwards and defenders…

What's more vital: a gun forward or defender?

yes very hard to put all those into categories. maybe this is what coaches mean when they say ” he does the 1 per centers and the intangibles well”

one of the things i love about watching basketball is it covers these areas, and its easier to see. A player who rarely turns over the ball is as valuable as a player who steals it. Both lead to creating an extra possession for the opposition. A poor shooting team, can still be super effective at creating extra possessions by stealing, turning over possession, and offensive rebounds, as that effectively gives them extra attempts at the basket.

im not sure how to translate that to AFL, but a turnover is 1+ extra possession, it goes to figure, that the player constantly turning over the ball, creates extra possessions, and extra shots at goal? or something to that effect 🙂

maybe AFL needs a fast break stat – where they count as a % how many times a team scores directly from turnover ball from their half.

What's more vital: a gun forward or defender?

precisely the point i was going to make happychappy 🙂 you cannot counterattack without successfully defending first. If a forward creates a turnover, or has a unsuccessful possession, then his team is suddenly under pressure to defend. So it can be argued, that a quality possession from a defender is MORE valuable then a quality possession from a forward. Why? its much better to have possession, then to lose it. A good defender however doesnt necessarily appear on the stat sheet as a standout though, the intangibles they offer will go missing to the average viewer (like myself) but they would be countless.
Such as:
forcing turnovers? intercepting? quality punches to rid the ball? clean effective hits / passes/ kicks to on running defenders to clear the 50? Forcing their opposite forward to run ineffective lines / routes away from his kicking zone. Physical pressure to the key forward pushing him into rushed shots / smothers / tackles / positioning. its endless, this doesnt always equate to good stats or recognition.

Id be very interested to see a quality analysis done on a lance franklin v scarlett. Which team benefits MOST from their presence? is scarletts ability to restrict the opposition, force turnovers, tackle, create turnovers & force ineffective possessions in his inside 50 more important then franklin taking marks / kicking effecient scores etc.

What's more vital: a gun forward or defender?

ive managed to steal Matt Giteus gameplan for saturday.

It reads ” receive the ball, kick- or run 3-5m dummy to first receiver, then do a flick pass back inside” repeat 10-12 times.

Wallabies need execution, skills, combinations, space

excellent article. hard to say which is more important, or which position offers more. Is stopping a goal and creating a turnover more important then creating a scoring shot? Maybe.

What's more vital: a gun forward or defender?

it will be a very interesting race, alonso showed some serious pace with the soft & hard tyres. i wonder if webber can challenge for a podium. both ferraris look quick.

wow. Genia is amazing. he is gonna be a wallaby great.

the commentary team sound like over excited fans shouting at the TV rather the sports commentators. You wouldnt even know the wallabies were playing an opposition if you were deaf…every comment is about the men in gold.

“Get it, go go go ! ahhh he should have given it, botched try!!”

haha. good job marto. this is about the same thing my housemate just said.

Wallabies versus Springboks live blog

really? never watched the channel 7 replays, but i dont think id want to based on that….they must be atrocious.

Wallabies versus Springboks live blog

the fox sports team are terrible at calling the game. As an avid sports watcher i must say it must be the worst ive ever come across. its not only bias, but they fail to see the game for as it is.

As soon as a kick is fielded in the wallaby 22, they declare “their a chance here to counterattack” how so? what do they base this on?

Its almost unbearable to listen to marto, kearns & co.

Wallabies versus Springboks live blog

any other offense and maybe the ref lets it slide….but its there ever a good time to let a dangerous tackle slide?

I didnt think it was that bad, but it makes sense for it to be called.

which roarer predicted a 35 point victory to south africa? under the conditions in which both teams entered the match, it was a bit of a stretch…

AAC in fullback makes so much sense.

what is your take on North, and is there anyone we can replace him with?

Australia set Pakistan 180 to win

agreed. regardless of the buildup, momentum, injury concerns / team selection issues somehow the fox sports team always has the wallabies as favorites. At least the south african & kiwi commentators are a little less bias, or at least make up for it by having equal enthusiasm in calling the game for both sides.

This may be the one exception where it favors the aussie team a little, home ground, suncorp fortress & boks getting smashed in the last 2. i recall a stat in the super 14 where Bulls team historically at the end of their tour playing in brisbane always lose, and they indeed did against the reds this year.

Anyone want to throw out a prediction?

im a lakers fan, but much like yourself i follow all teams, players and situations. I just love to watch and talk hoops.

Next season will be very interesting to watch, and i cant wait for it to get started. I am slowly piecing together a fantasy bball article, with top draft prospects, top draft steals, sleepers and busts.

Hopefully this stirs up some roarers interest in the new season and we can piece together a fantasy league with regular weekly updates, posts and articles being submitted on this site for that league.

If you got anything to contribute, feel free to share!

very good team with a young core. They will contend for the next 5 years now that KD has resigned.

what is your take on NBA fantasy? do you play? I am thinking of getting a ‘The Roarers’ league together if we have enough takers.

An inside peek at the NBA's wild wild west

good point about the rockets. they are a very very good team when healthy. i think the whole west will come down to health.
I could easily also see portland, spurs, & the hornets being a top 5 seed. But history suggests that chris paul may not be 100%, duncan, ginobli & parker wont be 100% and greg oden may never have a full season.

What team do you follow by the way?

An inside peek at the NBA's wild wild west

Paddy are you a springboks fan by any chance? 🙂 i dont share your enthusiasm, i simply cannot see how A) the springboks will counter the AB game plan and B) the allblacks dropping the ball so dramatically.

The AB’s lineout, scrum, loose play, pressure under high balls, counter attacking & work at the breakdown was far superior. In short, they dominated nearly ever area. Their key players were exceptional. Mils muliana, Kevin mealamu, jerome kaino, reid, conrad smith were all in scintillating touch.

I think the result will be a lot closer, and the boks will improve in all areas, but i dont think they will win.

Springboks will bounce back with vengeance
