Ryan Harris would be a great choice, especially given he’s already heading down the coaching pathway. A somewhat left field choice like Michael Hogan could work too, especially with his vast experience in English conditions. A very underrated bowler.

Bowling coach key to success of Australia's upcoming quicks

You wonder if coaches would be better served to not pump up some players’ tyres. I know the side is in transition, but the majority of players would still benefit from being forced to put in 2-3 outstanding Shield seasons before being picked for the Test side.

Picking Marsh over Burns would be folly

Totally agree, Allan. The 24 hour media cycle and constant desire for sound bites has coaches and players saying more than is necessary most of the time, or giving inane utterances that journos feed on. One sentence can become an article, which can be odd, and often pointless. I saw an article yesterday than Shane Watson was backing Mitchell Marsh to score runs in the next game. It’s hardly newsworthy stuff. Perhaps if he said that he had a voodoo dolls of MMarsh with multiple pins in the hamstrings we’d have a story, but alas.

Personally, I’d like to see a bit of mystery return to cricket and the naming of sides. We’ve been announcing the XI the day before the game starts in recent years, which is a bit of a fizzer. I used to enjoy hearing the captain speak about changes to the side after the toss, but now it’s all on social media well in advance.

Picking Marsh over Burns would be folly

It’s the only Australian ground where I’d consider resting Lyon and playing four quicks, which would include Siddle. I’m happy with the three quicks we’re playing.

How to win at the WACA

Johnson and Starc. Experience will be crucial.

How to win at the WACA

Neesham contributed a match total of 20 overs, 1/111, and 6 runs from 40 balls at the Gabba. I’m pretty sure Ronchi would achieve more with the bat, and his fielding would be of more value than Neesham’s bowling.

New Zealand should play Luke Ronchi in the Perth Test

Cheers, Don.

Cheers, Andy. Thanks for reading.

Good to hear your story, Ryan. I miss Grantland already.

The fact my absurd story is a possibility says it all, doesn’t it? 🙂

Absolutely, Paul. When the AFL set up their ‘media centre’ a few years ago, what they didn’t tell us is that articles would be generated by an algorithm. It is so sophisticated that it even creates the name of a writer, to give the impression that a human was somehow involved in its creation.

Very pleased to hear your experience with Experts on here has been as positive as mine. It’s great to have a site employing people capable of going beyond the obvious and providing quality analysis.

Thanks, Wayne. I appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear your experience on here has been positive, as has mine. That’s a great opportunity getting to interview a Matildas’ player. I hope you have similar opportunities in the future.

You’re welcome, Brett. I always enjoy your articles, and have appreciated the times, like today, when you have commented on my articles. Writers like yourself, Ronan and others provide great feedback in your comments, and I have certainly taken on board suggestions you have made in the past, including, ironically, a lack of evidence on my part on occasion!

You are correct in your observation on what prompted this article, and also that the response was great. I didn’t bother adding a comment to the masses, but instead chose to offer what is hopefully seen as an encouragement to all writers on here, especially us folk in ‘the crowd’ to keep aiming high.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and all the best.

Fair call, Ronan. Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

Allanthus, that comment was huuuuge. You’re a big unit. Turn it up!

Tired stereotypes and cliches equal lazy analysis

You’re right, Nordburg. Far too often, the headline ends up being the article. No need to read the body text in those cases.

Tired stereotypes and cliches equal lazy analysis

Absolutely, Ronan. 95% of articles and probably 80% of comments on here are well-evidenced and supported. Like you, I have found comments to be constructive and often educational, which is great.

I guess my main point here was to encourage writers and commenters to keep aiming high, and avoid falling into accusations and cliches with no supporting evidence, as a article with a high number of critical comments did recently.

To answer your question, I suppose I fall into the aspiring journo category at the end of the day.

Absolutely, Camo. Blackham was a beast. I’d highly recommend reading the book. Oldfield and Tallon were fascinating characters as well. Add it to your Christmas list!

'Give it up and take up bowling': A review of Malcolm Knox’s The Keepers

If we’re going with modern template with batting playing a crucial role, it’d have to be Gilly. In my lifetime, best pure glovemen I’ve seen are Ian Healt and Darren Berry, with Gilly’s keeping also right up there.

It’s certainly an untapped market. Could be a cash cow if it’s well managed.

Security also appeared to be focused on keeping him away from the boundary reporter…

Shane and Sachin take America

I didn’t see any sign of a speed gun, but it’s tough to gauge whether the pace was all that impressive, or the ageing reflexes of opposition batsmen played a role!

Shane and Sachin take America

Took awhile to register with me that they were actually talking about the game, rather than their careers or pizza preferences. Having Warne on the ground instead of the commentary box always helps on that front.

The fans certainly loved the Sehwag/Tendulkar opening combination. Next two games are in Houston on 11/11, and LA on 14/11. I hope at least one of the venues resembles a cricket field, but I guess they want seating capacity over appropriate playing conditions!

Shane and Sachin take America

I was expecting Agar to open with Warner and provide a second spin option, like Moeen Ali. That seems like a winning strategy…

Burns, Khawaja named in Australian Test squad to play New Zealand

It’s a concern, but Starc’s current form is too strong to leave him out. Siddle is an option, although unlikely to dislodge any of those three.
