I feel sorry for Tim Paine who’s better than the both of them, that busted finger of his placed him at the back of the queue.

I’d pick Wade over Haddin though, time for some new blood.

Haddin should be the Test keeper at the Gabba

I’d like to see Shane Warne actaully get involved in the development of our kids, maybe spend some time at the academy or set up a few clinics around the country and try to promote spin bowling amongst our juniors.

Leg spin bowling was just about dead before he came on the scene – it’s up to former champions like himself to keep certain disciplines in cricket alive.

Warne puts spin on lost generation

Bit disappointed you gave little mention to the great gelding Northerly, just merely a soft mention regarding Sunline’s prevention of a three-peat.

Northerly won back-to-back Cox Plates, as well as a Caulfield Cup and an Australian Cup. The Cox Plate Victory over Sunline and Viscount was a brilliant race.

I do recall talk of entering Northerly in the Melbourne Cup, but I heard they wanted to whack 61kgs on him!

Best horse bred in WA and forever my favourite.

Cox Plate 2012: The truly great Aussie race

Lyon was pretty poor against the Indians last summer and hasn’t shown much domestically so far. Lucky for him there aren’t too many spinners knocking down the door.

I think they’ll go in with four quicks at the Gabba due to the lack of quality spinners about and conversely the abundance for quality quicks available. Also the Gabba is a great place to bowl for the fasties. I think it’s a risk not playing a spinner but I think this is the path the selection panel will head down.

Why Nathan needs the Lyon's share of time

Melbourne haven’t done too badly building their forward line.

They’ve just lost Jared Rivers which will hurt them in defence.

Plenty to like about Melbourne's off-season moves

I love Campo’s articles because he’s passionate about the Wallabies and speaks from the heart – and that’s what’s lacking from the current Wallabies set up – HEART.

How can you expect a Kiwi to pump up the Wallabies before a game against the All Blacks??

There used to be something magical about the Wallabies.

CAMPO: Let's look to the past to kickstart the future

I expected GC to have progressed further than where they are, and it’s not because of the youngsters – the senior players they recruited have been woeful. Apart from Ablett, the likes of Brown, Brennan and Harbrow have contributed nothing of value to that football club.

Gold Coast Suns hold all the aces

“People have pushed the over-rated/hyped meme so much that people have actually begun to devalue his actual work.”

That’s a damn good point.

Pav, Sam miss AFL All-Australian team

Guns N Rookies will die off as a strategy next year, there won’t be an abundence of Gold Coast and GWS rookies available, so picking the right mid-pricers could be crucial.

How to fix AFL fantasy football

The bye weeks were really unenjoyable, annoying and ruined seasons, but finding a sutiable solution is difficult. An idea could be to give everyone 5 temporary trades for the round which then gets reverted on the conclusion of the round.

I usually play Dream Team but also played Supercoach for the first time this year, and I found that at the end of the season Supercoach opponent teams weren’t as similar as the DT teams I played (in a DT prelim I played we had 4 different players – ridic. PS I won). Maybe DT needs to change its scoring system in order to survive. DT players I’m in leagues with are already talking about shifting to Supercoach to make it more interesting.

Any chance of Nat Fyfe stealing the brownlow off Pendles this year? He’s a freak

Rejoice in the return of the AFL, unless you're a Demons fan

I’m not convinced re the Hawks. I just think if they cop a couple of key injuries, that is to Buddy or Mitchell, they are stuffed.

Also their high-possession, short-kicking game plan worked a treat last year, but the problem with having such a pronounced style is that it’s easier for opposition sides to eventually work out.

I’d hate to say it but the Pies will take it out – unless Buckley’s ego gets in the way and he changes things around.

Five key questions ahead of the 2012 AFL season

Excellent article. Feel sorry for those guys, especially Siddons who could’ve easily been playing Test cricket right now.

Australian cricket's Unlucky XI: Part one

I have to disagree with many on this, but I’m sure many who have played the great game would concur that the ‘mankad’ is the dirtiest, cheapest and laziest form of dismissal in cricket field. It stinks.

However, if the non-striker is ridiculously halfway down the track then I’ll comprimise by saying they need a warning.

Why Ashwin's Mankad was a legitimate dismissal

The Blues will be up there BUT they really need a good key forward to get hold of the cup. I dare say Kreuzer will spend some time up there but he’s better around the ground. All the top four sides from last year possessed at least one good tall in their forward structures.

Carlton Blues 2012 season preview

Ok, what happens when a team is decimated by injuries like the Dockers were last year? How will they be able to field a reserves team? They were barely able to field a senior side! I heard that they’ll have to recruit players from country and amateur leagues, and really that doesn’t help anybody.

What to do with the twos?

Where did you find this out? I heard one proposal was to have reserve teams for the Eagles and Dockers, but they would only play against teams having their bye in the WAFL, so they wouldn’t be part of the competition proper.

I personally think things should be left as they are, it’s working ok. Collingwood and Geelong are doing well because they have good squads, not because they have their own reserves. The Eagles made the prelims on the current structure after all!

What to do with the twos?

You can’t just casually take out Clarke’s 329* and Warner’s 180 and imply they would’ve had a bad series if you didn’t include those scores – those innings’ pretty much decided their respective test matches and the series itself.

Baggy greens not all red roses

The Baggy Green should represent the best players in the country. Period.

How about resting fast bowlers from the pointless 20-20 games?

Pat Howard’s appointment sure was a bit left field, doesn’t really make sense but maybe CA thought they needed a fresh perspective.

'High performance' Howard drops a cricketing clanger

Twenty 20 cricket makes Test cricket look good.

Fantastic that we have big crowds though. Awesome.

It's official: the Big Bash is a smash

The last line of this article just says it all, changes need to be made but they won’t.

I would love to see a Warner-Cowan selection, the good ol’ attacking-defending opening combo always works best.

In saying that, why doesn’t Wes Robinson ever get a mention? He’s been solid and cracked a ton against the Indians.

Is now the time for ‘Invers’ to make his mark?

I don’t know why people get upset if the favourites don’t win a world cup or a grand final. Saying that it would have been a nonsense if France had won isn’t right. With that sort of mindset, why bother having a tournament at all? Why don’t we just name the best team of the last four years ‘World Champions’ and be done with it.

It doesn’t matter how you get to a final.

Final thoughts on a superb RWC 2011 tournament

Rixon wouldn’t be a bad appointment. I’ve heard that big Tom Moody is being sounded out as a possible chairman of selectors.

I have to disagree on your point about the captain not being a selector – I think the captain should definitely have a say seeing he’s the on-field general.

Forget the rest, Steve Rixon is the right man for the job

Good article. The handling of the injuries will be crucial to the outcome. Geelong looked pretty slick last weekend so I’ll back them in … just.

The AFL grand final we had to have

Not sure why we can’t embrace both AFL and Rugby League which are both great games, it doesn’t need to be a competition. Aussie Rules is my fave sport but I love Rugby league aswell, I’ll be watching both grand finals. If it’s a Collingwood-Manly victory at least we’ll all be united in disgust!

NRL needs a better Grand Final than the AFL
