Absolutely agree. Slipper’s scrummaging (and opn play) has been better than Sio’s all season and has dominated every TH except TT. I think it’s a real shame Slips didn’t com to Melbourne when he had the chance as would have stared every game. Two best LHs in Oz in one team is frustrating

Folau slammed over anti-gay comments

Agree- thought CLL looked better than Toomua at 12 and he was fantastic in the last Bledisloe.

Carter dropped quite a few balls, but always looking for offloads. As the commentators said- it looked almost like he’d been given instructions to play a bit looser, as he usually plays very tight. Got a few of those offloads away. Also, remember he was actually playing 6 when Hodgson was off. Thought he played pretty well in general

Yep. Hodgson had at least one clean steal and one turnover. Apparently his stats were very good, but must say I noticed McMahon doing a lot more when watching (including some amazing cover defense). He’s a freak. Has almost Hooper’s speed with the grit of Hodgson. Great prospect. As others have said it’s a shame he’s not 3 inches taller (though I did notice him win a lineout jumping at number 2!)

Paul Alo Emile! The Rising scrum absolutely demolished all comers in the NRC. He is a genuine tight head and has pretty good hands and work rate as well. Ben Alexander has been such a disappointment in the loose after his his try-scoring feats some years ago and I think holds the world record for most scrum penalties given away (perhaps close second after Baxter)

PS- Very different scenario to Pocock and Smith or Waugh and Smith at 6-7

The Rugby Championship: No rest for the big questions

I think the point is that Hodgson can play very effective as a 6. He did so in fact for much of his career at the Force when Pocock was at 7. The argument for swapping him in for Fardy is that although marginally worse in the lineout (allegedly… see previous posts about his leap and arm length) in current form he is hitting more rucks, more effectively, turning over and slowing down more ball and carrying better than Fardy and this should replace him.

Would ‘have’ thought. Just for future reference 😉

You might want to turn the sound down. Pretty awful job on the sound recording :-s

NRC wrap Round 2: NSW Country and Melbourne the teams to watch

Alo-Emile is looking amazing at tighthead. I reckon he could be in the Wallaby squad before long. He actually seems stronger than Weeks to me. And his open field play is also excellent.

NRC wrap Round 2: NSW Country and Melbourne the teams to watch

I was at the Rising Rays game. Few observations:

1. Lopeti Timani is terrifying. It was he that laid out Holmes while carrying. He is MASSIVE and just as hard as his brother. Rebels back row are going to have some real depth.

2. The cheerleader thing was embarrassing. They looked like some volunteers from a local girls high school. Not good and DEFINITELY not sexy. I think if you’re going to have cheerleaders, accept what they are- eye candy. This (and the Rebels cheerleaders for that matter are just mildly embarrassing- they would fail to make the grade in a local primary-school comp in the US).

3. The games on the weekend definitely show that the double-compensation of increasing conversion value and decreasing penalty value has basically meant penalties (and drop goals) will not feature in this comp. Imagine for next year they will cancel one the two changes.

4. Rebels scrum looked VERY strong with Alo-Emile and Smith starting. I suspect the former may well be in a gold jersey before long. I’ve noticed the Rebs scrum in noticeably stronger with him on cf Weeks (despite him also being a very strong scrummager).

5. Nooooooooo noise from the crowd whatsoever although i did hear a little kid doing the ‘Reeeebels’ chant once by himself. I suspect the constant music at stoppages is compensation for this from the powers that be.

6. A lot of people (including me) just wore their Rebels gear. The Rising colours are basically the same with the addition of pink- suspect they’re going to struggle to sell much merch. The should have just called them the Rebels and used the ARC/traditional VIC navy and white hoops. The better name and jersey alone could account for the bigger crowd at the ARC!

7. Plenty of scrums in the game with all the dropped ball. Would like to see the stats but don’t think those concerned that the law variations will see less set-piece should be. More kicks for touch and plenty of scrums so far.

8. A lot of instances in the two games I saw of players taking quick taps from long-arm penalties where I’m sure they normally wouldn’t have. I think this might be a hangover from the ARC where a lot of those penalties were short arms! I would expect this to change through the comp and see even more kicking to the lineout.

The NRC wrap: Round 1

FYI- There has been an interpretation change around the scrumhalf’s hands on the ball this year- is only constituted as ‘out’ when he lift is out to pass it. Hence the ball in this instance was not regarded as out

What to make of the 12-all Bledisloe draw?

Sio was sick last week. Suspect he’ll be on bench this week. TH is a real problem. Paul Alo-EMile or Laurie Weeks need an SOS call

If Kuridrani is dropped from the 23, Horne will be in for sure as backup for 13

Beale? MCCabe?

Exactly- no way that Tahs combo would be used at test level. Suspect one of the reason Kuridrani got the nod over AAC at 13 is one Bastareud.

Wath some of last year’s tests again- McCalman had HUGE impact off the bench. And he’s now 5kg heavier. I’ll be expecting big things from him.

Hodgson has actually played most of his career at the Force at 6 and also played some 8, but 7 is defo his position.

I’ve said it before, but Giteau’s arrogance manifested not in drunken antics, but in insisting on playing at 10, where he was not good. If he had continued to play at 12 I doubt he would ever have been dropped from the Wallabies. I can’t agree that he was the ‘best of a bad bunch’ at the Brumbies before he left. In fact I would argue that his sideways running at 10 was precisely the reason they were so toothless in attack at the time. Now that he is back at 12 for Toulon (they didn’t make the mistake of allowing him to play at 10) he is back to his brilliant best. I agree that he is Australia’s best 12 and it is a shame that he is not in contention. The Rebels need a good 12…. perhaps he should return to Oz for next season and have a tilt at RWC 2015?

Giteau and O’Connor: The tale of two standards

Cheating 😉

In all seriousness though, I’m unsure if he did or not. It would actually be very interesting if the stats are available to examine his average penalties given away prior to and after being made captain to see if there is evidence of an influence.

Anecdotally, he was I noted binned last weekend (first time in…??) despite I think being the captain in the absence of Read. I’m certainly not claiming the effect as being to unique to McCaw- I’d like to see Hooper as Wallabies captain for the same reason.

Any stats gurus who can dig up McCaw’s average penalty counts pre and post-captain era?

Captain my captain

Number 7 or back row in general. They are the most likely to infringe and the ones able to get in the referee’s ear. Just look at how successfully Richie McCaw has avoided being penalised and binned over his career. If he was not the captain, I’ve no doubt he would have been in the bin much more often and the ABs would have suffered as a result.

Captain my captain

Absolutely right Warren. In fact: 1. Ball touched by crowd. 2. Different ball. 3. Throw in didn’t go 5!!
