A lifelong fan of old soccer as well as new football, I was involved with the Melbourne Knights in the now defunct NSL, have been heavily involved in the past with my hometown team, North Geelong Warriors and still, occasionally, pull on the boots for North's (very) social Thirds team. My favourite team in the A-League was Melb City but now giving Western United a go and internationally a tie between Liverpool and Hajduk Split. I was a previous Editor-in-Chief of a national weekly newspaper and my claim to fame in soccer journalism was covering the 2006 World Cup in Germany. As far as AFL is concerned - another sporting passion of mine - as I live in Geelong, who else would I support other than the mighty Geelong Cats! A quote I live by is of course, "You'll Never Walk Alone" - what else would you expect?!

“The Cats will be expected to WIN most, if not all, their remaining matches, and should other results go their way, they could finish the season as minor premiers for the first time since 2008.”

I don’t think this is going to be the case. Although having a rather inconsistent season, the Cats are just four points from top spot, so anything is possible. But consistency (or a lack of) usually are the hallmarks of a young side and even though I would love for the above to occur, it is highly unlikely. But, let’s wait and see!

Go Cats!

Your AFL team's run home: Part 1

Right from the outset, the opening game against Croatia, despite the 3-1 scoreline, you could see that Brazil was not going to be the Brazil of yesteryear that was going to set the WC alight. And since then, their performance has been anything but impressive.
Having said that, as you so well pointed out John, and I quote… “But that does not explain conceding seven goals, the complete lack of effort and attitude that Brazil showed in that game. Brazil didn’t just lose, they died a slow death.”
Not taking anything away from Deutschland, though. An incredible footballing machine, to say the least!

Selecao slaughter: Germany embarrass Brazil in Belo Horizonte

“I will be remembered as the coach to lose 7-1 but I knew that risk when I took the JOB and life goes on so that is what I am going to do.”

The only question that remains is in what capacity and where will he continue with life (after the 7-1 humiliation)? Certainly not as the coach of Brazil…. Or at least I wouldn’t think so!

Defeat 'worst day of my life': Scolari

There is an old saying in sport, no individual is bigger than the Club. You shouldn’t even contemplate supporting any other team, just because of past history with an opposition player who has now crossed the enemy lines and is one of you. As for the colours, well, take away your colours, or your logo, and you are taking away the very fabric of that club – it’s identity! Pretty much I have said everything right there! 🙂 Cheers!

What do team colours mean to you?

A very well researched and informative article, Paul, but yep, the timing thing!!! Off the field, as is the case on it, soccer – or football – is not just a game of opinions and strategies, but also one of timing, hey?!

What's happened to all the goals?
