I do remember Honda’s Arai San saying it could be possible to pilot a car just by using your mind. I dare say women will have a distinct advantage over guys if this happens!
Can robot racers put bums on seats?
Agreed. Unless you’re Alonso or have enough grey matter to multi-task, leave it to the boffins. Was a very smart move from Mercedes. Probably the most intelligent thing they’ve done all year by holding a mirror up to Hamilton and still coming out smelling like roses. Will be interesting to see how much Lewis takes on board.
Let the drivers drive - and nothing else
I remember talking to Martin Whitmarsh about the prospect of securing Alonso’s services at Singapore in 2013, just as McLaren were in the process of losing 12 million pounds – funnily enough we were actually standing in a gutter.
I’d expect/assume (yes insert ‘ass of u & me’ gag) that Honda is doing most of the heavy lifting as far as Fernando’s wallet is concerned, but as Jonathan Neale pointed out this year: “McLaren are fortunate in having a technology group on which we can at least shelter for some of these difficult times. But it’s not something that we can sustain indefinitely.”
He aint heavy
Alonso needs a perspective shift, not a sabbatical
If they were smart, they’d realise that bringing in a controlled engine might actually heighten the prestige of a manufacturer power-plant. At the moment F1’s in a very reactionary state and spend too much time staring at its shoelaces.
F1's 'invisible gorilla' test
Thanks Marfu. I think the sound of AER’s engine would’ve given them a fright as well. By far the loudest thing in WEC. Glorious sound!
F1's 'invisible gorilla' test
Few grey hairs started appearing at the 1/2 hour mark!
Webber: "I was talking to the car. I prayed"
Controlled ECU’s in MotoGP are being introduced as idea of drawing in more manufacturers, but so far it hasn’t hooked any fish. Likewise, introducing controlled chassis and engines in the lower WEC classes appear to be driving those wishing to innovate into the LMP1 privateer class and potentially out of their depth. Fuel-flow will also be reduced so the big boys don’t go below a magic lap time at Le Mans. This is all forecasting of course, but there are lessons to be learnt from F1 that aren’t necessarily being headed.
Where does Formula One fit into the motorsport world?
Fair enough. No more cake baking for me.
Mark Webber on the verge of his maiden world championship
Right you are. Calendar sent me into a spin this year. Few colleagues were mentioning jumping over the gulf over the course of the weekend. Probably where I got my wires crossed.
Mark Webber on the verge of his maiden world championship
Quite possible, but that would rely on someone admitting to error…
Williams' climate of controversy
It’s all how you argue. Massa was given the benefit if the doubt regardi g his clash with Perez in Montreal last year because Sergio’s Force India rep had to catch a plane and couldn’t make the hearing – leaving Perez to defend himself.
Williams' climate of controversy
Is it surprising that a Murdoch-owned channel would eventually attempt to enclose the sport in an air-tight hegemony? When Brundle announced his move to SkySports from the BBC, he said having “no in-race advertising was a key factor” in his decision. I think being unrestrained and having to fill air-space has blunted his badinage, with many of the nuances he used to deliver now completely absent . I am in no doubt the presenters on SkySports are operating with a precept handed down from upper management, but I think wielding the axe to its chief partisan, namely Simon Lazenby, would have a positive flow-on effect.
Formula One’s 'Hamilton-centric' media coverage must end now
It was a shock was to see that – according to TV ratings – Formula E currently has a greater popularity in North America than Formula One. Nielson ratings recorded that the Putrajaya ePrix coverage on FOX scored a 1.2 overnight rating for the replay on Sunday afternoon – a higher rating than any F1 race achieved this year in the US, with the Monaco Grand Prix drawing a peak rating of 1.1 as the most watched race. Orgh mate!
Formula One's American tragedy
Sounds like the reputation Montoya has amongst the Santiago Sixpack back in Columbia!
Massa may leave Formula One as another Brazilian underachiever
I think ‘joke’ might be a tad caustic given the cries of “Rubinho” during the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix. If anything there was less friction at Ferrari with Irvine, who was openly content to take the money and perform a slow jog. If we’re to rate Bottas as highly as some clearly like to, then I think Massa has stacked up fairly well. From matching and beating Raikkonnen, to enduring the Alonso years (whilst recovering from a head injury that should have seen him shuffle off the mortal coil), the little guy has had a very admirable renaissance at Williams.
Massa may leave Formula One as another Brazilian underachiever
Yes, will be interesting to see what engine package suits their Bosch hybrid system – more importantly how it will stack up!
Is WEC's holding pattern choking competition?
To get a pole position at the Daytona 500, win an Indy race and get within a lap of taking out the Indianapolos 500 is an achievement most men would be heralded for.
Truth is a woman achieved that feat. Also, driving Indy Cars requires a lot more strength than F1, so I guess slightly different at a ‘biological’ level
Susie Wolff’s motorsport legacy
Should Red Bull go down this route it will be interesting to see if Adrian Newey starts to show a bit of compromise with engine-packaging given the tight-packaging of the Honda power unit. Have Red Bull learnt their lesson? It’s hard to imagine them turning over new leaf after months of berating Renault.
Ron Dennis' Red Bull Racing fear
There’s a lot of ‘horse before the cart’ prognosis going on here which has evolved beyond the incident itself. Just waiting for the ‘I Saw Rossi Dancing with the Devil’ hardback to come out.
Why Valentino Rossi's dark side shouldn’t surprise us
Not sure if Loris was on the panel, but went on record a month ago saying he thought Lorenzo was mentally more fragile than Rossi.
Rossi shows a bit of leg, everyone loses their minds
Quite a few names there too like Andre Lotterer, Kazuki Nakajima, Kamui Kobayashi and James Rossiter.
The super solution right under Formula One's nose
Hey Mark. That’s the Overtake Lamp (five small LEDs)” on the roll hoop. The number of lighted Lamp(s) shows the number of OTS activations and blink when the system is in use. The lamps illuminate “white” while the championship leader comes with red lights called “Leader’s Red”.
The super solution right under Formula One's nose
NASCAR made a considered effort to do away with scantily-clad grid girls given their family-focussed brief. WEC for some reason didn’t stick to their promise of completely getting rid of the idea in April of this year.
Lucas di Grassi had few choice words on the subject: https://www.joomag.com/magazine/eracing-vol-2-issue-7/0975671001434768340?page=118
One thing worth considering is that the majority of BTCC grid girls run their profession as their own business, Perhaps this is a model (pardon the pun) worth considering here before we cut off a revenue stream for these women in the interests of a quick headline.
Motorsport’s hypocritical approach to gender equality
Completely agree Chancho, but as we know tryi g to convince manufacturers to pull back on showcasing technology is a problematic area. Maybe having more manufacturers leve the sport with circumvent that issue? :#
Down-force no longer required in Formula One
Trout fishing is looking like a viable alternative
