All of the comments above only go to show that Cooper is a divisive figure in Australian Rugby. Has there been such vitriol both ways regarding Dan Carter, Ruchie, Jonny W, Martin Johnson and other stellar international figures? No. A united country wins world cups. viz SA 1995.

Coopers involvement has been both toxic and brilliant in patches. Australia is not united behind him. If he wanted to stay he would never have signed with Toulon.

Wish him well but we are better off without him I think

SPIRO: Just let Quade Cooper leave Australia and the Wallabies!

Both Phipps and Nic White of the Brumbies are guilty of arguing with refs. Refs should be taking a tougher stance if coaches don’t shut them up..

White particularly seems to be a perpetual victim a la Ricky Stuart. Any ref who has the temerity to disagree with White’s view of the game cops an earful. He even went so far as to whinge to the touchies when penalised for obstruction over the weekend. Hardly a receptive audience you would think.

Young ones watching are not being shown a good example. It would be dire indeed if we find a ref losing patience in a Super Rugby final, or worse the RWC

SPIRO: Where there's no Will, there's no way for the Waratahs

ref said he saw it. Hence “can you give me a reason not to award the try.” There was no reason not to award it and so he did.

Agreed Woodman. A little bit out of his depth and he looks nervous. He’s been on the 7s circuit for a few years. I’m not sure he has perspective on the 15 man game yet.

Mike I see your problem with coaches giving inconsistent messages. It is very confusing sometimes unless you come to grips with the purpose of a coach.

Perhaps if you look at it this way. Coaches, Assessors and Appointment Boards should be considered as 3 different beasts.

The coach should help you identify the basics of reffing and then, as you do more, the different styles , different positional play and running lines which you might try for example. That way you can see which best suits you as an individual. Some things work for some games and levels and others do not. A coach who only teaches you his way of doing things is not a good coach really.

An assessor determines whether you are experienced enough to ref at a certain level but does not coach just as a coach does not assess.

An appointments Board decides who is best for what game.

Sometimes the roles are combined because of lack of numbers in smaller unions. But it is important for your own peace of mind to get the roles clear. Just as refs have their own style, so do coaches. Keep what you like and discard what does not suit you is my suggestion. Good luck with the whistle.

Every referee needs a strong mentor in their corner

Well said Dave.

How many times do we hear commentators talk about meerkats – and rightly. The first job is the scrum. Especially when there was such a contest in the early parts of the match.

Queensland was up against a Bok front row and came out very well I thought. That could not have happened if the breakaways did not do their job in the scrum first.

In any event, that there are spaces for backs to run at scrum time is hardly surprising. 8 men from each side are not in the defensive line. Very harsh to blame a blindside loosie under that pressure.

Genia was on the openside thinking that the Shork 9 was passing that way. Ungerer gave every indication he was passing open. Just good play from him. Not bad ply from Genia. He was simply fooled by good body language from his opposite.

What was wrong with James O'Connor last night?

Smacks of cover-up. Imagine the uproar if the suspended sentence had been imposed. Unfortunately the powers that be sometimes show no bottle in dealing with serial offenders.

With that history of dealing with refs it would be naïve to think Cheika did not intend to influence the ref. How can it be said that Cheika was unaware that there was a Law saying he could not talk to the ref during the game? It was not mischievous to suggest otherwise. It was an insult to the readers’ intelligence.

Cheika is clearly a brilliant coach but I do hope his flaws do not become a problem for the Wallabies. He has shown he has not learnt by previous transgressions. I hope he has now in a World Cup year. Everyone makes a mistake but simpletons make the same one twice.

SPIRO: Cheika must control his temper to continue his coaching career

You are spot on Jerry. Refs use them all the time but at least they are colloquisms for something which exists in the laws of the game. A double movement does not.

SPIRO: Michael Cheika needs to leave the Waratahs now

Well done Train. Law 15.5(g). In one form or another that Law has been in place since the early 1980s. Double movement is a League expression which simply has no bearing on a Rugby match. I find it incredible that rugby journalists use it. The only stipulation is that the action of reaching out and grounding the ball must be immediate.

RT and at the Force game the hospitality boxes were half full too. Did they sell them all I wonder. It does not look good.

Richard Graham is patient zero at the Reds

Always innocent until proven guilty. Just because a police officer on reasonable grounds or otherwise suspects an offence does not mean a jury will accept that.

But what does his contract say? Is a charge sufficient to allow the QRU/ARU to terminate his contract? If not should he still play? How will his head space be with this hanging over his head?

My view is he should not play. The QRU should wipe its hands of him. Harsh on Carmichael I know, but my view is the game is more important than him. The rest of us manage to go through our lives without being charged with cocaine supply. Why couldn’t he?

What’s best for the game is the way to look at it.

What do the Reds do with Karmichael Hunt?

exactly. when we dont want to hear from walsh he talks incessantly. when we want an explanation his silence is deafening.

R5169 I, too, am not a private school boy. I am not even from NSW. Neither am I hate filled.

But I have certain standards. I have come to love the game of Rugby because, as a general rule, most participants have the same standards I do. Those standards invlolve, amongst other things, an ability to go out on the town and not steal computers, not to go to pubs and get in fights, not to abuse my coach unless it’s too his face (in which case I expet to be dropped), not to take cheap shots at my opponents while they are getting up or have their back turned to me, not to antagonise an entire nation of my birth with my tweets and not to riducule my employer without expecting to get the sack.

In other words I expect Rugby men, to behave like men. Cooper has not done that. He has behaved like a spoilt child. On past evidence he is unlikely to change. He is unlikely to play the house down either (on RWC and 2012 form) and even less likely to because the ARU clearly does not want him.

Playing ability is not the sole test of a Rugby man, otherwise no club would have a thirsty thirds, and a raffle seller and a Colts coach and a hamburger cooker and a treasure and an U/8s ref and a bloke who puts the goal posts pads up. They are Rugby men. I am proud to be part of the same game as them.

I am not proud of Quade but, if he does what Rickety says, I could be.

Time for Quade Cooper to grow up

Stillmissit

I think you raise some extremely valid points here. The power of positive thinking would suggest that if you think the Blacks are the best team in the world, they become that.

I draw the comparison with Australian cricket when Alan Border, of blessed memory, took over against the Poms. On his first Ashes tour in England as Captain, as I recall, he banned after match drinks with them. He became Captain grumpy and we started to wallop them.

Camaraderie in Rugby is what its all about but it’s much easier to be nice to the opposition after you’ve just beaten them. I have said on this site for ages that we should have less Kiwi influence in the Walalbies. Repect Robbie as I do, how can he possibly convey to our team the all blacks are beatable when he does not believe it? Cooper and O’Connor grew up wanting to be all blacks. Kepu cried while watching a haka at his old school.

Let’s not forget that, but for the help of our NZ mates in the 70s, our provincial and national teams would still be in a backwater. But the fact is we are not the West island of NZ. More attitudes like Tony Shaw, Phil Kearns (appalling commentator though he is) and Tim Horan and less forelock tugging is what is say.

Cheers
Wal
