I totally agree with removing Australia from the tournament, but that’s the only change I’d make.

It would be a far better and more interesting tournament without Australia.

Rebrand the Rugby League World Cup – and ditch the Kangaroos

I’ve enjoyed the RLWC, but I am not sure the structure of the comp does it any favours. There are simply too many games with nothing on the line.

I reckon an 8 team round robin, with the top 4 playing semi finals, would be about right.

Everyone plays their regular round games twice a week over 3 weeks – at least one game every day – then two weeks of finals… that would be a great little comp.

League World Cup less hyped than Lebanese sausage

So you think they’ve missed the target in replacing Archer?

(Thanks guys! I’m here all week!)

Bernard Sutton to replace Tony Archer as refs boss: What?!?

Yeah agree – I was there in 1999 for the RWC on my lonesome and was befriended by some brilliant people.

Prepping for a weekend of Cardiff carnage (and maybe some rugby)

Tempted to have a little throw at the stumps on Rockarral in the Derby.

Very green in his first few starts in Adelaide over shorter distances, but overcame it to win well over a mile. Then went to Geelong and was knocked over at the 300m when just working into it. Picked himself up and hit the line really well – as well as anything in the race.

Bred to run every bit of the 2500m, should sit up on the speed and be grinding away at the end…

You can get 80/1 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him hanging on for a place at least…

2017 Derby Day tips and previews

Great piece. The wasted talent of Jarryd Hayne – a cautionary tale about putting the individual ahead of the team.

He could finish up at the Roosters though. They still have plenty of cap space left.

The vexed adventures of Jarryd Hayne the human plane

Fantastic draw for Richmond.

We don’t play a single team who finished above us this year!

Grand final rematch pencilled in for Round 2 as 2018 AFL fixtures released

Best bet of the day?

Sportsbet are offering $1.40 about Chris Waller crying after the race. That is MONEY FOR JAM!

I am flying to Melbourne tomorrow and really cannot wait. Winx aside, this is as weak a Cox Plate as I have seen, but I don’t think anyone will remember the vanquished when they talk about the wonderful Winx in the years and decades to come.

It will be a privilege just to be there. The Valley will be ROCKING.

2017 Cox Plate preview: Winx chases history

Ben – you were also mentioned on Triple M on the drive show (the Deadset Legends)!

I saw the news and thought – some bloke has told Ben from The Roar to go jump! Awesome!

We live in amazing times…

Crawling out from under The Rock: Tales of an accidental Twitter feud

Gee it’s disappointing that Black Caviar never got a crack at the mile… They were protecting her winning record by the end, I reckon, rather than challenging her.

I absolutely loved Sunline, but I reckon Winx has her covered over the Randwick mile.

Winx vs Black Caviar vs Makybe Diva vs Sunline (Part 1): Who would win races between the four champion mares of the 21st century?

Luckily I did Cam, but I wasn’t looking on the bright side at the time!

After also backing Sovereign Nation the week before, there was a lack of good humour in my house!

Track bias a downer on Caulfield Cup day

I think they were expecting a lot of rain on Thursday and planned accordingly, but it missed Caulfield in the end.

Just one of those things, I think.

Track bias a downer on Caulfield Cup day

Kathy O’Hara only had one ride for the day, but must have asked herself why she ever left the rail on Single Gaze at the 800m, which eventually allowed the winner to slip through on her inside.

This question was certainly being asked – in pretty colourful language – in my lounge room…

We won at Suncorp in 2016!

NRL announces 2018 draw

Brisbane Lions traded picks 20 and 25 to Richmond Tigers for picks 15 and 52.

Boom!!!

Every deal done in the 2017 AFL trade and free agency period

The Tigers don’t play a single game in QLD…

Not ideal for the club’s northern-based fans (of which there are many).

NRL announces 2018 draw

So Wests Tigers won’t have salary cap room for Cronk (because of Josh Reynolds!), but the Roosters have plenty of money left in the cap to spend…

And I woke up this morning in a solid gold house next to my wife Mila Kunis before driving my new Ferrari to my job as a beer taster!

Honestly…

Hey Cooper, this Roosters fan has some advice: Stay retired!

Absolutely brilliant stuff – thank you for putting that together.

Destruction Tour: How the Tigers eviscerated the rest of the AFL and everything we thought we knew

Do you think they will definitely take her overseas?

Would be tempting to stay here – surely another QE2 and another Cox Plate are at her mercy if she stays at home?

Winx breaks hearts and takes names

I was also lucky enough to be at Flemington when the Diva won her 3rd Melbourne Cup, and remember Lee Freedman telling us all “go and find the smallest child on this racecourse, because they’re the only person with a chance of seeing something like this again”.

At the time I was nodding along at these truly wise words.

Since then we’ve had Black Caviar, and now Winx!

No-one saw this coming!

Winx breaks hearts and takes names

She is just an absolute wonder – a supreme athlete.

Here’s a thought… any reason why she can’t win a 4th Cox Plate next year? She will be a 7yo, but seems to be going as well as ever.

Anyway, I have my flights and grandstand tickets booked for Moonee Valley on 28 October to see the GOAT go around again. Can’t wait.

It’s interesting that you identify a weak culture as an issue with the Kiwis, when the reason certain players won’t be there is they were taking illegal drugs during the season – which indicates that Kidwell is trying to build a strong culture…

It’s also rumoured that other players are withdrawing in protest at the treatment of those players.

Sometimes as a coach it must feel as though you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t!

Tongan Taumalalo proof of Kidwell's Kiwis culture cringe

Yeah absolutely.

Although there has still only been one openly gay player in NRL / ARL history (as far as I know)…

Macklemore and the NRL stand together for equality

As an aside, I thought Richard Hinds made a great point on Offsiders a few weeks ago about sporting organisations inserting themselves into social issues.

He argued that it was OK as long as the sporting organisation also backed up its words with actions – otherwise it’s just virtue signalling and nothing more.

With that in mind, there is probably more reason to be uncomfortable about the Women in League round, considering the NRL’s not great history in condemning players who have been involved in domestic violence. Indeed, the NRL could probably do more to encourage the acceptance of homosexuality in rugby league – although this is a very strong first step.

Anyway, I think it’s an important and interesting point – actions speak louder than words. And the NRL’s actions in this case have been very strong.

Macklemore and the NRL stand together for equality

Great piece, Mary.

It was a great performance, and presented the NRL as a progressive and relevant organisation, and rugby league fans as accepting and compassionate. Wonderful stuff.

(And, if nothing else, it created a pretty incredible amount of coverage for the NRL Grand Final in a week it might otherwise have struggled for relevancy!)
