It makes you wonder though if he didn’t mean it as a racial slur, is that what the players at Penrith call each other fondly? Is that his confusion?

But interesting that he’s had days to own up but it only came the day after there was footage showing there was definitely something that happened and Billy Walters was right there and prepared to testify.

NRL News: Leniu pleads guilty to monkey racial slur, apologises to Mam - 'I said the word but I didn't mean it in a racist way'

Wow the hatred for the Warners in many of these comments is shocking? Accusing Candace Warner of lying when the attitudes expressed by many keyboard warriors are only missing a few drinks and being in the right place at the right time for them to act just like those yobbos in Adelaide. People need to get their priorities right. Sport is important but not at the expense of abusing children and their mother, and then accusing her of lying because that makes you feel better about not condemning what happened. But she’s a strong woman and many men still don’t know how to cope with that – as evidenced by the way they reacted when she confronted them.

'Unsafe place': CA provides personal security for Candice Warner and kids after 'weak, gutless' abuse in Adelaide

Your first reaction is to not believe her? Why? Because she’s a woman or because she’s a Warner and it’s open seasons on the Warners again?

Perhaps they just need to be left alone. Not liking someone is no excuse for abusing them in front or their children, or without their children. Or is that the accepted way Aussies live their lives now, not being able to keep their unpleasant, pointless attacks to themselves? I bet these yobbos wouldn’t speak up in a real situation with a real criminal. I’m tired of this attitude that five years only undeniably worried that if enough of a mob got going, a member of Warner’s family could end up injured or worse.

Perhaps the fact that she also currently has a voice doing daily radio is part of the reason she was able to speak out. Of course they’ve copped abuse in the past because the Aussie yobbo is still a mindless mob creature especially after a few drinks.

But the only issue here is that people are so low as to vent their unwarranted abuse in the presence of young children – why is this situation again being deflected to excuse the abusers and push innuendo on the victims?

These old ex-player commentators need to stop thinking that as long as a bloke’s head stays on it’s a good hit. I acknowledge their brains are suffering from their own hits from their playing days (and then adding more head trauma in the boxing ring) but there are no excuses for tipping an opponent on his head even if you are the Golden Boy of the NRL.

'Filthy with myself': Cleary apologises as MAMMOTH ban handed down for horror tackle

I’ve heard plenty of comments about Trent Barrett having great insights and intelligence about the game, they may be his problem. Can he dumb it down enough for his players? And what or who do players play for – in a professional sport is seems to be defined by the money – not pride, not being a local junior, and for many teams not even really making an effort to play for each other.

Plus the modern game seems almost exclusively built on individual moments of ‘brilliance’ – eg Manly are toast without Turbo at his best, ‘insert name here’ is a freak. you have to have a marquee player rather than a solid team who put in the effort. Yet success still seems to come for teams where more than a handful of players stand out every week.

How there can be discussions about opening up more spots in new teams for players when we already seem to be knee deep in plenty who are lucky to get paid at all?

Barrett's successor will need to tread warily unless Gus can clean up Bulldogs’ mess

When I lived in Kensington I was always at the SCG and other grounds in the area for cricket (including Sheffield Shield) and various codes of football. It was great to have those things on my doorstep. But now I own a house and live west of Parramatta I never go that far east anymore. I only go east of Parramatta to go to the airport.

Also we can stay home and watch ALL the matches in the comfort of our homes with no line up for the loo or spending more time than the game even lasts to get there and the same to get home. Plus I agree AFL is the main code that is the best in a live setting rather than the limited focus of the tv coverage.

Build it and they won’t come: Why Sydney doesn’t deserve more stadiums

I’m getting a little tired of the argument that a tackle should be judged by whether someone is carried off and made a quadriplegic. The fact that Cameron Murray was able to get up and play on is luck for him not Manly.

Surely the point of rules to prevent the injury not excuse the tackle when there isn’t one. It’s like being pulled over for riding a motorbike without a helmet and arguing that since you haven’t landed on your head and died it’s not really that big a deal.

Speaking of mental health though, isn’t it Beveridge who should be checked out if he can lose his lollies over something so minor. This is the start of the season and the pressure on coaches only goes up from here. If he’s already lost it now, what’s he going to be like in a few months?

For the Bulldogs' sake - and his own - Luke Beveridge needs to pull his head in

Well the facial hair certainly indicates that Beveridge is trying to bring back the 70s.

Isn’t it clear by now that this trip to Pakistan is little more than overseas batting practise.

Cummins' captaincy questioned again as Australia fail to declare on Day 2

In many ways it seems like the coach should be a support to the captain and the team. A tactically brilliant captain may need support in his team management and vice versa. It’s also easier to wonder about a coach’s role when things are going well.

So is the question really whether an Aussie captain should be a Captain/Coach and what staff he then needs outside the playing squad?

Can Australian Test cricket survive without a coach?

Unless his matches would be played with no crowd then there is a ‘civic’ danger. I don’t want to imagine how well things would go with his passionate Serbian supporters in one corner and the rest of the crowd jeering him and cheering every mistake, leaving his poor opponent stuck in the middle.

Who would want to be the umpire for that? They’d go hoarse from saying ‘quiet please’.

And I can’t believe I actually agree with Piers Morgan on this one! 😱

'Toxic shame on everyone involved': World reacts as Djokovic faces Australian exile again

I’ve been a Novak fan for many years but his attitude and behaviour since the beginning of the pandemic has finally worn me down. I tried to look past his covid tournament in 2020 but it really has gone downhill since then. You don’t just get respect, you have to give it too.

Why did he not come for the ATP in Sydney? Was it because there was too much time for local authorities to act? Did he expect that arriving so close to the AO no one would make a fuss?

I don’t know if the court will be able to determine if he just assumed he would be waived through or if there has been a messy system of intentionally vague ambiguity between his camp and TA? After all Novak is the one who is still trying (?) to organise more power to the players to keep tournament organisers in line.

We’ve had enough of the wealthy, famous and connected not being subjected to the same rules as the rest of us. But he’s taken that a step further by trying to play the system and getting called on it because he doesn’t believe he needs to face any consequences.

In defence of Djokovic: Australians have never given Novak the respect he deserves

Surely getting a visa to come for the AO is a formality as part of them confirming players in the tournament. A standing arrangement. Border control is another thing – no vaxx, discovered with illegal substances etc at the airport. Their own consequences.

But I’m a bit lost how our PM’s job is supposed to have tracking the movements of some tennis player as one of his highest priorities.

It’s surely TA’s desperation to have him here that’s the problem. If he’d just gone home he maybe could have come back next year if the pandemic is called over, but now, doesn’t he risk being deported and banned for 3 years?

'They crucified Jesus and now they're trying to crucify Novak': Tennis dad's astonishing attack on Australia

From the outside it looks like TA kept reassuring him that things would work out by the time he arrived, and didn’t they say publicly that they didn’t know the grounds for his exemption? Did they not reach the same conclusion that the rest of us did that it would be on the grounds that he’d had COVID recently?

Or perhaps they thought his star power was enough so that once he was standing at customs smirking no one would raise a fuss. Because it also seems that someone advised him not to arrive earlier for the ATP tournament in Sydney because there would have been more time to deport him. They were counting on it being so close to the start of the AO.

UPDATE: Serbian president vows to 'fight for Novak' as ScoMo weighs in on Djokovic deportation

Considering hardly anyone considered the GF would be anything other than Storm-Panthers how much of that match was Panthers already playing their GF. Beating Storm in the finals was the goal. And there are way too many Penrith old boys in the media who won’t even consider that they need to do more to win beyond just turning up.

The focus is way too much on a match back in May than one played two weeks ago.

And then there were two: Talking points from NRL preliminary final weekend

Took me a little while to realise it wasn’t Greg Alexander. He was so excited over the miracle of Penrith and Cleary it was hard to tell.

And then there were two: Talking points from NRL preliminary final weekend

Unfortunately the only priority in all of this is to ‘keep the competition alive’. You can’t throw the book at a whole team and achieve that goal at the same time. So it will be interesting to see what happens now when (not if) there’s another incident in the evacuation zones in Qld.

If this behaviour is threatening the existence of the competition and millions of dollars, why aren’t players being made examples of and thrown out of the competition to prove it’s a serious issue?

Why are the NRL bending over backwards to accommodate the Dragons?

Unfortunately the “we will do whatever we like attitude” is one of the reasons footballers are placed on a pedestal by many who then try to justify anything they do with primary school logic.

It does all boil down to “I didn’t mean to be caught and now I’m sorry”. However sport runs on money rather than strength of character which we are constantly told we can’t expect because they’re ‘young men’, which means they barely have enough wits about them to tie their own shoelaces.

As for the Dragons, I’m wondering the club’s long term support of JDB has given the other players even a more heightened sense of being special.

'Culture of entitled men': How Dragons can make this right

And still people make excuses for these players and blame all sorts of people for this situation rather than this great plan they had to go against the express orders of their club, not forgetting actual police fines.

Not only did they think they were clever having their party, when confronted with their wrong doing they scampered like cowards and then lied about it. People want to know why there are score blow outs – the Dragons are poster boys – selfish, arrogant, gutless wonders.

He should just trust in the Lord to provide shouldn’t he? Not cosy up to rich men then leave them hanging.

Take that Clive! Folau going back to Union in stunning twist

Wow Folau’s desperation to make a buck is embarrassing. And the way he treats anyone and everyone as convenient tools on his path to the next pay cheque is pathetic. Surely he’s amassed enough millions by now?

Take that Clive! Folau going back to Union in stunning twist

I can’t believe people are making excuses for the Party Dragons. That’s exactly the problem. They think they’re some kind of unicorns that real world rules don’t apply to. And anyone who wants to downplay their arrogance and complete disregard for the rules and the pandemic after almost 18 months of it being the major news story of the day, is definitely part of the problem.

Surely the option is either play footy or party? They’ve chosen to party.

What the hell were the Dragons players thinking?
