Rugby Union sad sack...

Now’s when Cheika should be planning and plotting for the next 3 years culminating in (hopefully) success at RWC’19, and it starts by identifying, encouraging and selecting players who will be in their prime in 2019. It seems as if he’s still living in 2015 and trying to recapture the results from then: he doesn’t appear to have learned from the pommie whitewash, and I think Sydney on the 22nd August will be a sharp reminder for him to move beyond 2015. The worst thing for Aussie rugby is for Cheika to win in Sydney.

Oh dear! Three tweets attack the inclusive culture of the Wallabies

Van Rensburg missed out on the SA Rugby Rugby Championship squad which was a big surprise for me!! I think he came off injured towards the end of the final, so hopefully it’s not serious – or maybe that’s why he’s not in the squad.

Hurricanes take home the title, show the way for the Wallabies

You people are giving waaay too much oxygen to loser Phil Kearns’ usual self-serving attempt at being relevant. The last thing on the players’ minds was to be left standing around in the freezing weather with idiots like Wilson waving microphones in front of their faces. The post-match presentations should have been hurried to allow the players to get into shelter, with more formal interviews conducted in more appropriate environment for the players.

The interviews are mainly more the TV viewers as hardly anyone on the grounds bother to watch or pay attention to them.

The Wrap: Hurricanes finish the job off, captain Coles slammed

I must admit I did raise my eyebrows when I saw the tweets from the 3 players referred to. However, I do agree with Spiro’s point that persevering with players who’s focus is in another environment is counter-productive to the necessary evolution of the Wallabies.

I would question whether Gitteau offers anything for the Wallabies when he’s been playing in a completely difference playing culture for so long. Is he fit or fast enough to cope with Cruden let alone Barrett? Is Ashley-Cooper the best winger available to the Wallabies, or is he the best inside centre running around for Australia? They have been exceptional ambassadors and representatives for Australia, but the speed of the game may catch them out now.

By dragging them back from Europe, Cheika may be copying Eddie Jones’ game plan to suit the players, rather than a gameplan to counter what the All Blacks will bring to Sydney. I’m expecting a dour forwards-driven game from the Wallabies in Sydney, slowing down the game every chance they get, in the mistaken belief that Eddie Jones used it successfully against them in June.

The European-based players are a stop-gap measure: it worked during RWC’15 against England Wales and Scotland, but were shown up in the final. It’s an indictment on the ARU that one year after RWC’15, they’re still hanging onto players enjoying their time in Europe, rather than taking the hit now and blooding the new younger players who showed potential during Super Rugby.

The Rugby Championship is a great opportunity to blood new players with an eye to the future: not winning it is not the failure feared by many, so long as there are measurable positive results from the new selections.

Great final, credit to both teams. It looked like the Lions allowed the conditions to dictate their gameplan rather than have the confidence to transition to a plan-B as the conditions deteriorated. van Rensburg was mighty impressive against the Crusaders and the Highlanders, but was virtually unsighted after Ardie Savea nailed him in the first 6-7 minutes.

The best 2 teams were in the final. Can’t wait for the 2017 season to see the Blues continue their late-season improvement.

Nope. But I had no problem watching it on free streaming

Hurricanes vs Lions highlights: Hurricanes crowned Super Rugby champions

I don’t see where we disagree…you?!?

Where the Super Rugby final will be won

The calibre of the opposition faced by the respective finalists will have a significant bearing on those statistics. I would hazard a guess that the Hurricanes’, and therefore Savea’s, statistics would have been markedly different had they played the same teams the Lions did, i.e.:

Sunwolves (Lions 26-13)
Cheetahs (who beat Sunwolves 92-17)
Stormers

As they say: there are lies, damned lies, and statistics…
