Great team. Phipps deserves to have the starting 9 jersey – anyone who disagrees should watch Green and Golds recent video comparing his BaaBaa’s game with Genia’s. Jones adds height to our dissapointing lineout from last week and Speight is considerably for dangerous in attack than Tomane and a lot safer with ball in hand. Great to see Carter starting again he is my find of the year. Also pleasing to see Alexander’s name absent from the 23. I believe his time as a test player is over and each time he comes on he does more harm than good. All we need is Moore and Pocock back healthy and we might have a world class team on our hands.
Four starting changes and the longest Wallabies bench ever
I doubt McMahon will put pressure on the 7 jersey as our captain and arguably best player is our 7. Also McMahon is a number 6 thats where he has played for the rebels and where he played for the Wallabies on sunday morning. Neither Fardy or Higgibothams are 7’s either. I think you mean blindside flanker or number 6.
Wallaby positives to take from the Barbarians game
i think it is a fantastic team. good to see hardworkers like swoop and slipper, hooper and foley rested.
A breakdown of Cheika's first Wallaby team
Fair enough. It will also be an easier transition to make due to the amount of Tahs players in the camp, plus the extensive game analysis other Wallabies would have done on the Tahs style of play this Super Rugby season. He will be a success and I’m excited by the appointment.
Why the Wallabies should turn White
Of course they are important points. I was focusing more on the immediate success that the Brumbies had under him. I forget what they came before White stepped in but I remember it was a dismal season. Yes they lost the grand final but this was a Brumbies team that had dramatically improved in the course of a season. I believed the Wallabies could use that sort of immediate result based format. Alas Cheika is the coach now and that is in itself a great appointment.
Why the Wallabies should turn White
beale will play an interchangable role with toomua. he will spend lots of time next to AAC in the centers. that explains the aac selection as well. folau is stated as loving playing outside beale, and ewen would want to maximise folau’s potential to play at his best. this is a team that could crumple under beale’s hand or beat the all blacks in brilliant fashion. its an all in move by the coach and i love it.
Kurtley Beale: gamble or masterstroke?
i think the reasoning behind it also relies a lot on beale playing an interchangable role with toomua, leading a beal AAC combo to be seen often on saturday night. also folau’s love of playing outside beale would of been extremley influential in mckenzie picking KB at 10. folau needs to play at his best for us to beat the al blacks so ewen would want to maximise his potential
Ewen McKenzie is playing Russian roulette with the Wallabies
I agree Michael, when a team wins a championship whilst simultaneously playing great attacking rugby it serves both as a reminder that attractive rugby is winning rugby, as well as an advertisement for our game.
The rugby world needs the Waratahs to win
Higginbotham has played the majority of his Test caps at 6
AAC proved extremley effective at 14 during the spring tour
Toomua an excellent 12 in his last several games for Australia
Those three are proven test quality at those positions.
Who else is out of position? And how in the case of the three selected above, is that a bad thing?
The Wallabies squad, if picked tomorrow
typo haha
I think Skelton would be an incredibly effective bench player for the Wallabies as he is yet to play the full 80 for NSW. Who would you drop to make room for him?
The Wallabies squad, if picked tomorrow
1. JAMES SLIPPER
2. STEPHEN MOORE
3. SCOTT SIO
4. ROB SIMMONS
5. SCOTT FARDY
6. SCOTT HIGGINBOTHAM
7. MICHAEL HOOPER
8. BEN MCCALMAN
9. WILL GENIA
10. QUADE COOPER
11. NICK CUMMINS
12. MATT TOOMUA
13. TEVITA KURIDRANI
14. ADAM ASHLEY-COOPER
15. ISRAEL FOLAU
16. TATAFU POLOTA-NAU

Wallabies have next to no chance this season
I am more impressed by Cheika everytime I hear him speak. Up the mighty Waratahs.
Cheika tips Skelton as a future Wallaby
great comment. first bit of sense written on this thread.
Why Quade is a deserved Wallaby vice-captain
Fair point but I think Deans deserves a lot of credit for blooding a lot of young guys into the Wallabies jersey. So that when we do have times of unprecedented injury, we still posess depth with test experience.
Why Quade is a deserved Wallaby vice-captain
Fully agree with you Cyclop. However I do think the decision was made rather to make him feel more supported and stable within the side, to silence the media debate over who our number 10 is, and possibly release his best potential as a player. VC is a figurehead position largely in my opinion, much of the leadership responsibilities will still fall to the leadership group i.e Horwill, Moore, AAC.
What I am worried about is if Mowen gets injured, suddenly Quade is the Captain of the Wallabies.
Quade Cooper named Wallabies VC: mistake or masterstroke?
valid points but i was referring to seeing how good we could play under the new McKenzie regime
The Wallabies' best is yet to come
great suggested forward pack mate. i agree simmons is a passenger, his pass to folau was actually an accident. mccalman really impresses me when he comes off the bench and he would be a great starting 8.
when higginbotham and pocock comes back though its should be
robinson
moore
slipper/ryan
horwill
fardy
higginbotham
pockock
mowen
hooper and mccalman on bench – brilliant impact reserves
SPIRO: The brilliant Wallabies winners are finally grinners
personally i believe the more times AAC touches the ball the better, I would rather the ball go to him and him run it then spread it to Tomane for the sake of it. Tomane should he played better as a winger who gets involved in the middle of the field anyway
SPIRO: The brilliant Wallabies winners are finally grinners
dont understand this desire to play folau in the centres. he is playing great at fullback. keep him there. AAC is the best 13 in the country hands down, the only reason he is on the wing at the moment is because of our wing injury/suspension crisis.
SPIRO: The brilliant Wallabies winners are finally grinners
would love to hear your evidence to back up labelling them as elitist. Massive generalisation based off an old fashioned stereotype.
Would a cross-code 'super club' work for the Waratahs?
i dont disagree that quade plays his best with genia beside him. but cooper had genia beside him in the vast amount of 2011 and 2012 tests and cooper played well below average. lets just see what JOC can do with these weapons around him in the second test before final judgements can be made about QC
Deans has picked the right team for tonight
Part of being a Wallabies fan is having an unwavering, often unwarranted sense of optimism!
Deans has picked the right team for tonight
my mistake, this was written before the lions was announced – assuming vunipola was starting. I do think that our double prop set on the bench will give us an advantage in the second half fitness wise, regardless of who they have in the front row.
