great pick however i reckon gill will have replaced hooper in the starting lineup by the end of the series. his pilfering ability far surpasses that of hooper. or they could both be playing in tandem in the place of palu/mowen.

That is a valid point however the Reds team that did play against the Lions had a vast amount of test experience compared to the Brumbies team; (Daley, Holmes, Cooper, Tapuai, Morahan, Davies) vs (Kimlin, Rathbone.) Yes the Lions team that played the Brumbies was a ‘weaker’ team than that which faced the Reds, yet to even be selected for the Lions you have to have played for your country, and played well for your country. Doesn’t that make the Brumbies victory on an equal or greater status than the Red’s performance?
Unlimited potential: the Wallabies team analysis
Beales’ lack of confidence under the high ball and unreliability in defense would make him a liability against this Lions team and their style of play. Beale will be most effective coming off the bench in this instance around the 65 minute mark to take advantage of a tired opposition backline, slotting in between the centres and counterattacking in broken play. Starting Beale is also too much of a risk due to his lack of proven match fitness and also undeserving as a result of his behavior and character issues seen this year. In my opinion he is lucky to be in the 22 even though his talent will be useful in those last 15 minutes.

Fantastic article. I believe not enough credit is given to Barne’s ability to make those who play around him better, and safer. Many are quick to insult Barnes due to his unflashyness but I believe his calm and stable presence at the back will only compliment Folau’s flare. Not to mention Folau playing next to AAC and Barnes who will be constantly communicating to Folau about positional play etc.

Valid points, I hope you prove me wrong for Saturday night’s sake!
However I do think Alexander is still being picked for name’s sake and not on current form, both Slipper and Ryan had far more impressive individual seasons than Alexander, and both are much more competent in the scrums. Judging the scrums will be a massive focal point for the Lions (shown by the selection of Cobiserio) I would of preferred one of those two in the front row. But hopefully Alexander does play well he did have a fantastic game against England in Twickenham last year also.
As for Folau don’t get me wrong I am a massive Tahs fan so I love Folau, I just have reservations about him making his debut in a position he has never played before in such a big test.
Anyway we’ll find out if Deans has made the right choices soon enough!
