It’s do or die for Australia as they battle Afghanistan in their final T20 World Cup group stage game. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).
Heading into their final match of the Super 12 stage, the Australian cricket teams needs to win and to win well against Afghanistan if they are to advance to the final four of the tournament.
In front of passionate home fans, that would have been a fair expectation heading in, yet problems with both bat and ball during the tournament have see them struggle at times, and a 40-over performance is required today if they are have to have any chance of advancing.
Bowling first would be an ideal outcome from the toss, with an innings of containment and then a dash for quick runs giving the Australians the best chance of clawing their way past England and/or New Zealand and into the top two qualifying positions in Group 1.
Should the Aussies be forced to bat first, 200 would be a fair target for which to aim, before attempting to keep Afghanistan to around 110; potentially providing enough improvement in net run rate for the statistical miracle required for them to continue in the tournament.
Injuries have been a considerable talking point through the week, with Tim David and captain Aaron Finch still unlikely to play. Ashton Agar, Cameron Green and Steve Smith are in line for call-ups to what is one of Australia’s most important T20 internationals of recent times.
Whichever XI does take to the field will need to be aggressive of mind throughout, as no tomorrow looms without anything other than a crushing defeat of an Afghan team that will be out to destroy Australian chances.
Prediction
Whilst the match seems certain to be won by the Aussies, the margin of victory will be the only thing that matters. Potentially, that exposes them to the guile in the Afghanistan bowling attack, and in the quest for big runs and quick wickets, could in fact make them susceptible to a potentially shocking loss.
Game management will be key and the Australians will win, yet not by the lopsided score they require.
