The Cricket World Cup continues this afternoon when Australia take on Bangladesh in Pune. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4pm (AEDT).
Australia has sewn up a spot in the semi finals after Glenn Maxwell’s heroics against Afghanistan, however they will be keen to keep their winning streak alive this afternoon. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be looking to lock down a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
After two losses to start the tournament, Australia have slowly found their cricket mojo and go into their last round robin game after six straight victories.
It hasn’t always been plain sailing, with the Australian quicks struggling to have much impact to date. The batting has been different though with some amazing knocks.
David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell have all reached three figures this tournament, but it was Maxwell’s 200 against Afghanistan to secure a remarkable victory that will go down as one of the best ODI innings ever.
With this effectively a dead rubber for Australia, they may elect to rest some players. Sean Abbott and Cameron Green must be in line for a call up.
Bangladesh won their last start against Sri Lanka by three wickets, to record their second win of the tournament. Najmul Hossain Shanto and the injured Shakib Al Hasan got amongst the runs and assured their team of victory; however, it was earlier events that dominated the news.
The Angelo Mathews timed out dismissal was once again within the rules of the game, if not so much the spirit. There were media and players on both sides of the fence here, but when the Bangladesh bowling coach Allan Donald comes out in strong opposition, you have to wonder whether team morale will become an issue.
Prediction
Australia are riding a bit of a wave at present, finding ways to win games when they seem to be in losing positions.
They are still to play a perfect game which will cause South Africa plenty of headaches as we head into the semi-finals.
Ahead of that though, we have this clash – and Australia should prove too strong.
Australia by 80 runs or 5 wickets.
