The white ball leg of the Australian summer begins with as Australia and the West Indies face each other in the first ODI in Melbourne. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:30pm (AEDT).
Australia still seem to be suffering from a post-World Cup hangover following a Test summer where they never quite played their best cricket, ultimately leading to a shock loss at the Gabba.
With fresh faces in the ODI squad and a new captain, the Aussies are hoping to ignite some spirited performances and positive results.
The West Indies’ limited-overs teams have found some belief after a horror 2023 with Darren Sammy at the helm; they will be looking towards opener Alick Athanaze and captain Shai Hope to score the bulk of the runs.
The tourists bowling attack looks strong, with Gudakesh Motie and Hayden Walsh set to pair as spin twins and strangle the Aussies. Another youngster to watch out for is 21-year old bowling all-rounder Matthew Forde, who took three wickets in his lone ODI and is coming off good form from the Bangladesh Premier League.
Prediction
Both teams are experimenting in this ODI series with Australia looking towards the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, while the Windies are building towards the 2027 World Cup.
That makes this an interesting match as inexperienced players from both teams look to make their mark and push for a long-term spot in the ODI team.
I hate going against the six-time World Cup champions, but the Darren Sammy fanboy in me is backing Shai Hope to lead the Windies to a victory in a final over classic.
