The BBL continues tonight when the Hobart Hurricanes take their home game against the Melbourne Stars to University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match starting at 7:10pm (AEDT).
Both these sides have started with BBL09 with two wins and one loss, with the Melbourne Stars in the top four courtesy of a strong net run rate. Pre-season favourites the Stars will be disappointed after they let the match against the Strikers slip away, and will be keen to bounce back here. They will go in with the confidence gained from a comfortable win against the Hurricanes already this season.
After a spluttering start to the season, the Hurricanes found their best form last game against the Melbourne Renegades. James Faulkner and Riley Meredith got among the wickets, whilst Qais Ahmad has been a revelation with his leg spin.
The Hurricanes top order does look a little thin, but they do have a strong middle order to support D’Arcy Short, who was impressive against the Renegades.
The Melbourne Stars seemed to be cruising to a third win on Friday night until Glenn Maxwell somehow played onto his stumps after a switch hit ramp/hook shot that only he could attempt. From there, Peter Siddle stole the momentum away.
The Stars were rightfully pre-season favourites. Featuring a top six including Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Nic Maddinson, they have the potential to take games away from the opposition very quickly.
While copping a bit of stick early in the last game, Dale Steyn is a big addition to a bowling attack including Nathan Coulter-Nile and Adam Zampa. There doesn’t seem to be a weakness.
Prediction
Taking games away from home is risky business.
At Blundstone Arena, the Hobart Hurricanes would be right in this.
However, on more neutral territory, I expect the Stars to bounce back quickly into the winner’s circle.
Melbourne Stars to win by 30 runs or five wickets.
