Australia will look to pull off their first ODI victory of a tough series in India during the third match in Ranchi, with a loss ensuring the tourists will be out of the hunt for the trophy. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7pm (AEDT).
The Aussies came into the ODI series off the high of an outstanding T20 series, but have struggled to match with India across the first two games on pitches with plenty to offer.
While the tourists have had their bright moments and various players showing form, they haven’t clicked as a unit yet, and that’s generally what has to happen to beat India in India.
Australia haven’t had enough runs in them so far, and it’s the top of the order which needs to be standing up.
They failed to bat out their 50 overs in Game 2, while only putting put 236 on the board in Game 2, which simply isn’t good enough. None of Usman Khawaja, Marcus Stoinis or Aaron Finch have made a big score yet,and it comes down to the pressure created by all three being boundary hitters.
Australia must rotate strike more frequently to try and get India’s strong bowling attack, led by the in-form Jasprit Bumrah, off their game.
India have also had struggles with the bat, but not quite as badly as the Aussies, with Pat Cummins ensuring the games haven’t got ugly.
He picked up four wickets in the last game, but try as they might, Virat Kohli came away with a big century and spent most of the game on the ground.
The problem for Australia’s attack is that they need to be strong for the entire 50 overs in the field and keep their lines and lengths consistent, because India will find a way to score runs. Someone will always stand up, particularly at home, whether it be Kohli, MS Dhoni or another.
The runs should flow a little more in Ranchi, and with the small boundaries coming into play, batting first and putting runs on the board could be the way to go here.
Prediction
To be brutally honest, India haven’t even looked at their best yet throughout this series, with only a big Kohli century getting them over the line last time out. If they can get to their best, then the expected run of results will continue and India will close out the series in straight sets, with two games up their sleeve.
India in another close one.
