The blockbuster clash that draws in over 200 million viewers takes place at the MCG as India face off against bitter rivals Pakistan in the Super 12s. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).
With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the tournament, India’s bowling attack is severely weakened. However, they did beat Pakistan earlier this year without Bumrah.
Responsibility will fall on senior swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to step up and lead the Indian attack, but don’t count out young left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh to make an impact, especially in the death overs.
With the bat, there’s no man as ready for the occasion like Virat Kohli is against Pakistan. Kohli has three 50s in four innings against Pakistan in T20 World Cups. The man loves a run chase against Pakistan, with Pakistan’s only victory against India in T20 World Cups coming when Kohli was dismissed last year in Dubai.
The key for Pakistan to win against India? Get Kohli out and the battle is almost half won. India will also bank on finishers Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik to fire in the final few overs to bat Pakistan out of the contest.
The strength in Pakistan’s batting lies in their opening pair of skipper Babar Azam and keeper Mohammad Rizwan. However, do the pair have it in them to take a few more risks and give Pakistan’s middle order more freedom to flourish in the latter overs instead of playing catch-up cricket?
Mohammad Nawaz has done well when promoted up the order and could get a promotion to 4 or 5 to tee off against the Indian spinners.
In a huge boost for Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi is back and did well in the warm-up games to get some overs under his belt. Pakistan need him to fire with the new ball, while Haris Rauf brings in the X-factor with the extra pace he brings into the Pakistan team.
Leg-spinner Shadab Khan will enjoy the long square boundaries the MCG has, and will want to utilise them to his advantage.
Prediction
Even without Bumrah, I still see India as favourites. Pakistan have found it extremely difficult to win white-ball games on Australian soil, especially with their batting line-up struggling to adapt to the extra bounce.
While I don’t see India winning as comfortably as Pakistan won last year, India have enough in their line-up to get the job done.
