The BBL continues tonight with the Melbourne derby, when the Melbourne Stars travel across the city to Marvel Stadium to take on the Melbourne Renegades. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match starting at 7:10pm (AEDT).
A little under 12 months ago when these sides played off in the BBL08 grand final, few would have predicted that a derby the following year would be between the first and last teams, yet here we are. The Melbourne Stars are tracking to expectations, but for the Melbourne Renegades, it has been a season to forget.
Their last game against the Scorchers in Geelong was the most promising of the season, where lesser lights Sam Harper and Beau Webster guided the Renegades to an above-par total.
However their bowling woes were again on display, with only Kane Richardson a consistent threat. While Richard Gleeson put in an improved performance, the Scorchers got home with six balls to spare, a sizeable margin in T20 cricket.
The Renegades’ task has also become harder with Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson both missing the next four games with the Australian ODI tour of India.
The Melbourne Stars are also impacted with Pete Handscomb and Adam Zampa on national duty, although the Stars still boast a very strong line-up.
Haris Rauf was unheard of only a few weeks ago, with even Glenn Maxwell using Google to find out who he was. We are certainly aware of who he is now, taking 13 wickets for the tournament including a hat trick against the Sydney Thunder on Wednesday night.
Their batting line-up is the best in the tournament, with Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell both in imposing form. They fully deserve their position at the top of the ladder.
Prediction
At zero wins and seven losses, the Melbourne Renegades are three wins adrift of seventh position on the table.
Top-five system or not, the Renegades cannot make the finals and the Melbourne Stars will be keen to make certain of that tonight.
With the Stars’ roster, I think they will just have too much class.
Stars to win by 30 runs or five wickets.
