Australia face three tough days of Test cricket in Rawalpindi to hang on for a draw, after a dominant Pakistan batting effort all but ruled victory out of the question on day two. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the action from 4pm (AEDT).
On a sombre day following the tragic passing of cricket greats Shane Warne and Rod Marsh, Australia’s bowlers were again made to toil on a largely lifeless pitch.
Pakistan’s batters duly filled their boots, with first-day centurion Imam-ul-Haq joined in three figures by Azhar Ali, the former captain continuing his excellent record against Australia.
There were precious few moments of joy for the visitors, though Marnus Labuschagne’s direct hit to run out captain Babar Azam after nearly 150 overs in the field was outstanding. To their credit, too, the bowlers prevented a complete Pakistan rout, keeping the run rate below three an over before a declaration.
A stroke of luck was to come, with bad light seeing only one over bowled before stumps; but at 0-5 in response to Pakistan’s monstrous 4-476 declared, the Aussies are in a sticky situation indeed.
On a pitch with few demons, the performance of Pakistan spin twins Sajid Khan and Nauman Ali, plus all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed, will be a crucial storyline on day three. The pitch did take turn for Nathan Lyon, particularly on day one, and with Australia’s famous vulnerability against spin, that could be the key to unlocking this pitch for the bowlers.
