Silverware is up for grabs when Pakistan and England meet in the T20 World Cup final at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).
After the shakiest of starts to the tournament, Pakistan has now found serious momentum; and after scraping into the the final four thanks to a South African failure, stand just a game away from claiming the trophy.
New Zealand were no match for the men in green in the semi-final, with a seven wicket win securing their place in the decider.
Pakistan sat awaiting the winner of India versus England, yet like us all, could not have believed the hammering dished out to the pre-tournament favourites by a rampant English top order. After a decent effort with the ball, openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales powered to victory in just 16 overs and have created such a stir with the win, that they will head into the final as favourites with the bookies.
The fluky nature of T20 cricket ensures that predicting a winner in this one will be difficult, yet there are some important areas to look to in terms of key indicators. Pakistan will rely on a superb front-line pace attack and excellent variety in their spin options to take wickets and slow England’s momentum through the middle over. The English will be hoping that two of their top four are able to explode from the blocks as they did against India and lay the foundations for a famous win.
Death bowling will be key, with Chris Jordan and Sam Curran crucial for England and the brilliant Shaheen Afridi certain to be a vital part of any Pakistan success. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam will look to set the tone early with the bat, whilst Hales and Buttler have hit top form at exactly the right time for England.
Prediction
In the crapshoot that T20 cricket can sometimes be, either side could would this match with ease; yet with the stakes as high as they can be and two teams finding their best form at exactly the right time, we could be in for final that lives up to expectations and celebrates what has been an excellent tournament.
England’s fielding could be a potential game-breaker as the men in blue and red raise the T20 World Cup trophy aloft come the end of the night.
